Got an A8N-E NF4U, cross posting from here: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=32&threadid=1982891&enterthread=y

Long story short, mobo does not recognize that my x800xl exists and will only boot if I have my voodoo3 pci card in and plugged into the monitor.

How do I get it to recognize my pci-e card exists? I have tried it with just the pci-e card in and the screen stays black, computer beeps 3 times and does not proceed to get anywhere.

With the pci card in, it works okay.

I just installed the "steel heatpipe" from the asus e-store. It came a bit bent out of shape, so I had to bend it back when I was installing it which was annoying and took some time to get aligned properly. The heatpipe is getting really hot, can barely touch the thing, 62C+ I measured with a digital thermometer. It's not in an upside down case though. While it may be hot, it's running fine so far. Ran prime95 for 2 hours and no problems.

Hi everyone - first post here. I have a Asus A8N-e with a Zalman NB47J heatsink, nothing fancy. But it looks like that heatsink will get in the way if I try to put a videocard in there bigger than the current GeForce 6800GS. I doubt a 8800 will fit at all, and who knows what ATI is doing with their cards. Anyone have a 8800 in their setup? What type of card can I get in this if I try to upgrade? Thanks.

I'm doing a clean install of Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

Wondering if anyone has any experience with their A8N-E mobo?
Did you install the nForce 4 driver package for 64-bit?

It's been a few months since I installed Vista x64 on my A8N-E system, but I don't recall needing any extra chipset drivers to make it work. For what it's worth, other than a weird glitch with my Firewire CF card reader, I've had no problems with Vista on that system.

Just wanted to confirm:

You didn't choose to install the Nvidia nForce chipset drivers, right?

My CPU fan has become noisy (even after cleaning). Any suggestions for something that is nice and quite? I'm using a fairly good coolermaster cpu fan that can have the fan replaced, but is there something that is totally silent and affordable?

Look at my sig. My Big Typhoon was almost silent but I just had to try the water cooling. I'm thinking of reinstalling my Big Typhoon.

It's been a while since I logged-in in this thread. I just wanna know if one of you guys out there is currently using an 8800 series video card and/or thermalright ultra 120 extreme on this mobo or A8N-SLI Premium mobo.

I swapped my A8N for an A8N-SLI Premium as the Asus nForce cooler was junk, and I got the Premium for cheap. I couldn't be happier with this board, now I must decide whether to buy another 7600 for SLI or just get a new AM2?

I have the 8800 GTX. Great card, but it gets totasty (warm). Internal monitors put it up around 84c somedays. No problems though. I've had it churning through Total War Med'evil II with massive armies at full graphics and it's breezed. 2MB of RAM helps. Need at least 500W of power too.

How is this possible? I still want to keep my A8N-e but I want to use the 8800 series video card. I just bought 64 X2 4200+ and will later add 2Gb of memory. Will also buy A8N SLI Premium as a back-up. I dont wanna buy LGA775 yet, I'll wait until the DDR3 is mainstreamed and Vista compatibility is fixed.

Hello!

I have a question, I couldn't find it earlier.
Where is that bloody motherboard temperature sensor on A8N? Anyone found it?

And small advice about NB cooling.
I have A8N SLI Deluxe since march 2005. I replaced original noisy cooler (after 3 months of usage) with Zalman NB47. Original was still good but I dindn't want look inside is it works or maybe is it death to often... So... Zalman NB47 was working with no porblem fo two years. It was always very hot (I think about 60 degree). But it is still far to max 90 of NF4.
I made some hardware upgrade (dual-core CPU and Scythe Infinity Cooling) and I wanted to make my PC more compatible with really big GPU... So I had to change tall Zalman. I mounted Thermalright HR-05 SLI. This is a great heatpipe solution with big heatsink. There is a small paradox with our mobos and that heatsink. In spite of that the TR is calling SLI it totaly blocks second PCI for GPU (not only A8N has that problem). So you can't use SLI mode. On others mobos (like DFI) it doesn't make that problem... Things are placed in other way (especialy PCI-Ex x16 slots)...

Small advice about montage of HR05. Don't use pins with springs. They are to delicate to have a good presure of heatsink block to NF4 chip. Use screws. I did it.
It looks like that: http://www.night-modders.com/m...PNphpBB2/pliki/hr2.jpg - that example shows normal HR-05 (not SLI) but idea is the same.

On my WEB are photos of my solutions. Recently I changed case and cooling (to Chieftec and Scythe) and HR montage (with screws).

I don't have the A8N-SLI, but I do have the A8N-E running in another system, that is OC'd.

I overclocked an Opteron 144 1.80GHz to 2.6GHz, with DDR400 memory running at DDR440 speed.

OC is very good but... Remember about good chipset cooling. When FSB goes high, north chip is very hot too. Look for my sig for actual OC status.

One last thing about the chipset fan. I recommend calling the Asus RMA department and asking for a replacement chipset hsf if you have the little "screamer" (~8000rpm) on your board. The replacement hsf is a little bigger and runs much quieter... The original chipset fan has known issues and is very noisy. I called and received the replacement in a week which I installed with AS5.</blockquote>

If you have a Rev. 2 board a replacement isn't necessary, as they are shipping with a new Heatsink Fan. I received a Rev. 2 A8N-E from ZipZoomFly and can confirm this .
Yes, I've got an ASUS A8N-E Rev.2,
and lately, whenever I cold boot,
then the "new/updated" chipset fan squeaks like crazy for about a minute,
and then returns to normal no-noise state.
It'll surely die pretty soon...

Does anyone know how to remove/replace the friggin fan?
(A guide like this would be the best! )

And, any good chipset fan suggestion?
(You see, I've got an NVidia 7800GT VGA, so I have to replace the fan with an equally small one).

Thank you

Above are for the DFI boards, but the actual steps are applicable to the A8N. You will have to completely remove the mobo. It helps to have the mobo on some sort of a cushioned surface to facillitate installation of the new cooler, as this will help you push the pins back in.

If you are willing to go through the trouble of disconnecting everything from your system and removing the existing fan, I would strongly suggest you invest in an aftermarket chipset cooling solution. There are more than a few members who have had the new fan die on them after a few months of use.

Note that if you have trouble getting the original pushpins out via compression, and have new push-pins, you can *carefully* cut the the old pushpins using very fine wire cutters or a strong nail clipper.

And, what do you think about this Akasa AK-210 Cool Blue chipset cooler?

Realy smart approach
But, I'm afraid I won't be that lucky...

Anyway, I'm thinking about trying what's being described here [Asus A8N-E Fan Dead (last post)]
How to resurrect your chip fan;

Fix for Asus A8N-E Noisy, Slow or Failing Chipset Fan on Motherboard

Items required:

1. can of WD40 (or similar) with extension straw for nozzle
2. a tissue

What to do:

With the computer off place your computer in a position so that the motherboard is vertical (motherboard is already vertical in a tower case). Stuff a tissue under the offending chipset fan (to soak up any excess WD). Then stick the extension straw between the fanblades at the top part of the fan and give it a couple of squirts of WD. We are using gravity here to help the WD get where it's needed. Make sure the tissue is in place and is not going to let any WD drip down out of the fan. Now go and do something else for half an hour or so. This will let the WD do its magic and also give it time to dry out. If you don't wait, you'll end up with WD40 sprayed everywhere by the fan and it probably won't be lubricated as well either. So wait. You may want to hold another tissue over the top side of the fan when you turn the computer back on, just to be sure (and depending on whether you gave it more than a couple of squirts or not). Remove the tissues when you think it's safe and you're done. The fan should be going like a little champion again.
What do you think?

You can give the WD40 a try, maybe it works for some time, but i think that the fans bearings are worn out and the problem will boomerang soon

There were two different fans used on this board:
- http://www.egielda.com.pl/imag...b1df894acfa024adf1.jpg

Both won't live forever, but the first one is even crappier than the second

To replace the fan, the board should be removed, otherwise conducting paths on the boards backside may be damaged.
Your link to 'Remove ASUS Chipset Fan and Heatsink' shows a very good guide.

The original Asus Chipset fan is 3$
