ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Fan Noise...

Hi!

After 10 months use, I started to notice a growing fan noise. I opened up my rig and it looks that it comes from the chipset fan, but I am not sure.

First of all I thought about a loose cable touching the the power unit fan but no cables are near it.

It's an Eurotech Silent 460W. Well, it's silent allright, as all I could hear was a silent whisper coming out of that.

The CPU fan makes some noise, but I think that's what it should be, a cooling noise, if you see what I mean.

I guess the high pitch noise I hear comes from the chipset fan. Anybody experienced this already?

Thanks,

Inikay.

Sounds like you have a classic problem with that chipset fan in its last stages of life. It will fail at any time now. Mine failed only 3 days ago... ( I bought my board Jan 1st.) Call the asus 1 800 number, option 3 for the RMA department and they will send you a replacement fan, no questions asked. (It'll take a week) I would recommend you do a little searching about this topic, as there have been 100's, if not 1,000's of people with the exact same problem. As I type this, I am waiting on a replacement fan myself....

I recommend you order a replacement before you need it.

Thanks KJ. The fan keeps turning but makes a loud noise. I live in Europe, so I guess I have to go through the normal guarantee channel, instead of asking ASUS directly.

I guess if the fan stops completely I should stop using the computer until I replace it?

Wow everyone is getting this problem... I just had the problem with my deluxe too. It was the chipset, I replaced it with a Zalman NB47J cooler and it's dead silent. Highly recommend you getting one

I'll see how the replacement fan goes first, a bit hesitant about having a passive heatsink on there, though i have heard good things about the zalman NB47J.
I'll keep in touch and let you guys know how the replacement fan goes.

I will make he fith person in the thread that has had problems, like i meantion in a couple threads tuesday when I got home from work my fan had completely siezed. No warnings, no louad nioses (which would be easy considering it is one of only 4 fans (including Vid card) and next to the GTX in games is the loudest to begin with) just siezed completely. I choose not to use afterwards though, my case sensor hat it at ~84C and it has been fairley gernerous at high temps compaired to Asus probe. Touching it made it feel as hot as a stove, and I had to pull my finger back instantly. I wouldn't recommend running during a full failure specially if you use the Nvidia HD controllers.

I replaced mine after reading so many messages about those chipset fans. I thought my computer was just a little noisier than the last setup I had. After replacing it, it's much quieter.

The only other thing I might do later on is add a small Coolermaster 40mm fan on the side of it (fan that comes with a Coolermaster chipset heatsink, just take seperate the fan from the heatsink and place it on the Zalman). I did notice the Zalman was hot to the touch but at the same time, that shows it's doing its job.

Is the replacement fan from Asus the same fan that was on the original board? I really don't want to go thru this again in another 12 months. What's the secret to getting the heatsink and fan off the board. I could probably figure it out if a pull the whole board out of the computer, but that's way too much effort...

Thanks

I would just like to post my experience, and thank everyone who posted this fix on the other thread.

Like all of you my fan started giving out. It started having an erratic fan speed, and after my system was powered on for a while, I swear to you the fan sounded like an air compressor from a fish tank (very noisy and annoying). So as a couple of people pointed out, you can screw a 40mm fan right on top of the existing heat sink without much trouble. I had to take out my water pump and my graphics card to access the fan. I then unscrewed the four screws holding down the plate on top of the heat sink, and then removed the fan's three screws that were under the fan blades (one has to rotate the fan blades to get access to all of them) with the fan. I then screwed on this new fan, from Newegg, it even came with the right screws. So after making sure I had the fan oriented to blow down onto the heat sink, it was just a matter of screwing it down onto the heat sink and plugging it in to chipset fan power...piece of cake!

The noise level is now a bit lower than with the original fan and now without the dieing fish tank compressor noise. I hope this helps for all of you looking for a quick solution to this problem.
