Someone handed me my motherboard today. It seems that the fedex courier decided to deliver it to apartment #1 instead of apartment #11.

Anyway, I put the new motherboard in and am having the same problem with as I did with the last one. With both 512 MB DIMMS installed, the computer won't boot.I am wondering if they just sent me back the same motherboard. Since I am using ocz memory, i went to their forums and noticed they had this memtest86, so I downloaded it, installed it onto a floppy, and booted up the computer with it. Both DIMMs passed, though according to the memtest, one is running at 1515 MB/s while the other is running at 1630 MB/s. I wonder if that is the problem.

Just a second, I thout you said it doesn't boot ? or does it only boot from a floppy but not from hardisk ?

It won't boot with both DIMMs in at the same time. It will boot with a DIMM in slot B_1.. I tested both DIMMS by sticking one into slot B_1, testing it, turning off the computer, taking the first DIMM out, putting the other DIMM into slot B_1, and testing it. The computer works with one 512 MB of ram, not with both sticks at the same time.

I posted this on the ocz forum and they are saying they think my matched pair of DIMMs isn't a matched pair.

That assumption sounds correct as if they were exact matches, Memtest would report the same speeds for both. The fact that one reports a higher speed than the other means that the SPD settings aren't the same for both modules which means they don't match.

As to your question, you don't really set SPD in the BIOS, SPD is what it defaults to if you don't make any changes. When you see timings referred to as SPD timings, these are the default timings that were programmed into the module by the manufacturer.

Thanks for the response century child,

How do tell what the default timings are in the bios? I know where to manually set the timings but I don't know where to get the timings from. Am I going to have to install an O/S and use something like CPU-Z for this?

Most likely. I don't know of any DOS based programs that can display your RAM timings. What you can try is to install one module, then set the timings to something really loose like 2.5-3-3-8, 2T then turn the system back off, install the second one and see if you can boot then. This won't really solve anything though because it seems apparent that the modules do not actually match which means they won't play nice together in dual channel.

Anyone have a TV tuner in their A8N-SLI? I am trying to install a WinTV-PVR-250 from my old system, when I plug it in to the PCI slot, it won't post. It just loops my display. Video BIOS -> Blank Screen -> Video BIOS -> Blank Screen. I've tried other PCI slots, but same results. Any ideas?

I found that the memtest program that I was using from a boot floppy to check my ram showed the timings...except for this motherboard , of course.

So I installed windows xp, and cpu-z and checked the memory timings. The 512 MB stick in the machine was:
pc3200 200Mhz 2.0-2-2-5.

Just what it was supposed to be. Turned off the machine, yanked out the DIMM, stuck the other stick in. used cpu-z and it showed this:
PC4000
200Mhz 2.5-4-4-7
250Mhz 3.0-5-5-9

My package of matching dimms has dimms that don't match. And that solves my mystery as to why I can't run this machine with both DIMMs together.

Wow! thats unreal! What a screwup

Thats OCZ right! There warranty is second to none.

With a little negotiation, you could probabally get them to send you a couple of their highest rated sticks. I would imagine they will do anything to get that pair back.

Glad you resolved the problem. Cutting edge technology is tough enough to deal with, without some stupid packaging mix up thrown in the mix.

Just wanted to let you guys know that base on GuitarDaddy's advice I lowered the times for my 3200XLPRO DDR to 2-3-2-5 from its stock 2-2-2-5 and it appears to run stable. Running the Sandra Burn in process and on pass 4 with no problems. The weird thing is I was able to pass Memtest86 with stock timing without errors.

so i took guitar daddy's advice and sent back the ultra 500w psu, which btw was not without a major headache. the rma guy at ultra was a complete dick, and actually hung up on me. i used to do tech support for dell, so i know there are hoops you have to jump through and rules you have to submit to if you want something returned. so after telling their support guy about the problem and step by step how ive swapped out every single part in the system besides the psu and was still having the same problem (which is almost true... ok i lied and said i had already rma'd the mb/proc and was still having the same problem) the guy said it wasnt the psu at fault and then didnt even bother to do any troubleshooting from his end.

his logic was that if the unit was powering on and running stable in most applications, then memory dumps were no indication that their unit was faulty. i guess he took me for an idiot because a computer needs alot more voltage when running graphic intense programs - like gaming on a 6600gt for example, and there are alot of ways a psu could still be at fault. even after pointing out the probability through process of elimination the guy remained unphased. so i asked the guy if he would be willing to stand behind his infinite wisdom and have ultra completely cover my 1400 dollar investment. of course, he said no, so i said fine, then give me a return number so i can send back your product and wash my hands of this terrible experience with your company. again he said no. thats when he got ugly and told me i was wasting his time and hung up on me.

not to go on a bigger tanget here, but its our right as consumers to return a product within the alotted 30 day period, and i shouldnt even have to give these bastards an explanation, but i was more than specific about my problem and i did more than my share of hoop jumping. i went through alot of hell running back and forth to best buy, using money i didnt really have to purchase an assortment of new parts in order to swap them out to narrow down the problem. at my own expense, i swapped the memory, hdd, video, monitor, backup power unit, pulled usb and firewire connections, gameport connections, tried other power outlets, yada yada yada... so yeah, i feel i did my part.

luckily for me i had used my company's corporate purchase order number to get my computer parts quickly, and since my company spends alot of money with the vendor we retail with, the sales rep was more than willing to get me the rma number and actually talked to an ultra tech support supervisor and filed a complaint for me. nothing felt better than getting that rma number despite that jerks best effort to keep it from happening. IN YOUR FACE CHARLEY MURPHY!!!

i know that calls can be irritating, and it could be that someone was just having a bad day, but this in particular really seemed to reflect a company attitude of uncompromised non- accomodation. what kind of company runs like that and how is that good business practice? god knows id be stuck with that crappy psu if i had purchased it on my own. so lesson learned....

1. NEVER BUY ULTRA PRODUCTS.
2. WHEN BUYING A NEW SYSTEM, BUY TWO OF EVERYTHING JUST IN CASE.

anyway, im waiting on my new thermaltake silent pure power 560w and it should be here tomorrow. i guess technically the problem still could be the motherboard, and knowing my luck it probably will be - you know, just to squeeze a little more lemon juice in the gaping wounds of my poor downtrodded heart. but ive got my fingers crossed and will convert to any religion to make this work.

o btw, centurychild also suggested to uninstall the nforce ide drivers. so i guess my question is what is wrong with the drivers?
any known problems?

Thats insane Burninator!

Sure glad I didnt get that guy when I RMA'd my X-connect. Hell, I told him that I had an X-Connect which may or may not be bad, and he offered to replace it on the spot. No questions even asked! I bet the entire phone call didnt last 5 minutes. Positively the most painless RMA I have ever experienced.

They should really think about firing that guy.....

I have it. Running fine. Had some problems tho. Remember to connect all the power connections to the motherboard. If it's still not working, place the RAM in slot B1. Helped me.

try disabling the onboard raid through the bios.

I just recieved my board, the first thing I do, putting the processor in no problem, but the amd supplied heatsink and fan doesnt clip into the retention bracket, it looks different than the diagram and im pretty frustrated, any ideas? I might be doing something idiotic, but I dont think so. Not fun for a first time builder

Hi all,
Having lots of problems with A8n-SLI setup.
My spec is in my details, problem I am having is...
Firstly, created the RAID diskette from the CD. When installing windows XP, windows basically tells me that the info on the floppy isnt what it wants ! So, decided just use 1 raptor (windows recognises it as a IDE disk, spooky...)
At various points of the windows install, the pc either reboots itself, or just hangs. After 20 attempts, still no successful install of windows. CPU (with air) was pushing 80 degrees Celcius, so I hooked up my Zalman Reserator water cooling to it (I used this for a Prescott, so it can cope with heat !) and now it is between 50-60 degrees C. I think all the components I am using are OK with the mobo (again, see my spec) I even lowered the multiplier, and gave very lax timings on my memory.

Anyone experience issues like this, or got any ideas ? Its driving me nuts...havnt even put the second graphics card in...

Forgot to add, flashed the BIOS to 1001 aswell, just incase that was the issue ! And I'm using a TAGAN 480w Power Supply

The rest of the specs is: -

A8n-SLI (not the deluxe)
2x 74gb Raptors
fx53
2 x Inno3d 6800gt PCI-express
1024mb Corsair 2500 v1.1 (bh5 winbond)

Any help, very much appreciated

It's not a heat problem. My case has two back fans and one front fan. The processor stays around 40C.

Besides, I have made two new discoveries. First, SiSoft Sandra's file system test will hang my system every time. Second, whenever that happens and I get the endless XP loading screen, booting with "last known good configuration" will boot it every time.

I guess the hard disk controller is bad.

i've almost got the exact same setup as you, except the hard drives. i've got 2 sata raptors and a plextor sata dvd burner. but anyways, the ide drivers are known to be huge problems with this chipset. i had a similar problem, but you got further than i did. i'd install the ide drivers from the support cd and next time i booted up windows, it'd hang after the loading screen.

so after many hours of trying to figure out what the problem was, i installed all the support drivers except the ide drivers and it runs fine now, except for the fact that i have to RMA my board for 2 defective lan ports.

Is your retention base installed? The bracket lock should swing down and lock in place. Make sure you have the heatsink installed correctly. The bracket lock can only connect one side or another.

the retention base is pre installed, I have noticed in the list of package contents in accessories a 'retention bracket', I thought this was attached to the heatsink, that must be the retention lock, which means im short of a component, which means I may have very well killed my 3500+ by trying to lock the heatsink incorrectly. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Installed yesterday, no issues, everything is great.

3 questions:

1. should I use the nivida port for LAN or the yukon one?

2. Is there an Bios update I should do? relativly new board, might be bugs that got worked out since i got it to my door.

3. Is there any software off the CD (mobo asus cd) that I should make sure I DO install besides the LAN software?

thanks guys
