Does anyone have any news on when the Asus A8N-VM CSM will be released? I saw that several sites have it listed but nobody shows it in stock.

I was told by one of those vendors (atacom I think) that they would have the board at the end of the month. Who knows how truthful that is but once people like zzf and buy.com actually list a product it generally shows up in stock within a couple weeks.

This thing should make a fantastic small and cheap server board or media center board. Where else can you get onboard dvi, gigE, and firewire for ~$100?

I don't believe it. I just bought the Gigabyte board yesterday because I wasn't willing to wait 3 weeks for the Asus board to be released. That's absolutely incredible.

Can anyone who has this board confirm the BIOS limits the FSB to 240MHz? And I guess there are no CPU voltage adjustments either...

Thanks.

I've been checking Newegg daily, and the board is never in stock, and they keep moving ETA back a few days as old date comes closer. Now it's the 11th, and if they do the same as last 3 ETA's, on the 11th it will change to the 15th.

I thought this was supposed to be the answer to those that had NF2 Soundstorm boards, as the upgrade they were waiting for, specifically Dolby Digital Live (allows 5.1 gaming with single wire SPDIF connection, as Soundstorm did). Dolby said earlier that Asus was jumping onboard. But with this motherboard, I see nothing about Dolby Digital Live, and instead simply SoundMAX High Definition Audio, which is not the same thing. Dolby Digital Live has High Def Audio ability, but SoundMax does not have DDL (only Dolby Digital passthrough, just like every chip since Soundstorm went away).

I was really hyped on this board, but the audio is a big dissapointment.

Edit: FSB max of 240??

I bought the a8n-vm csm right when everyone had them in stock for a day or two. Unfortunately I'm having some issues with it but I'm thinking there's some BIOS settings that need tweaking (or an update).

Cool n'Quiet does not work for me. Installing the AMD cpu driver and setting power management to Minimal Power Management causes a bluescreen with a 0x7f error. The bigger problem is that if I use the onboard video the machine will crash pretty quickly with a bunch of video corruption on screen. I've been using an old PCI video card and it seems to work fine aside from the cool n'quiet issue.

Hopefully Asus' support will get back to me soon...

I'm not using the audio on this board.

You probably already did these, and Asus needs to put out a bios update for cool&quiet, but...

Four things are required for Cool'n'Quiet...

1) You need to download and install the AMD Athlon? 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.2.2.2

2) You need to enable Cool'n'Quiet in your BIOS

3) You need to enable ACPI 2.0 support in your BIOS (if this option is available). Some motherboards have built-in support for APCI 2.0 and offer no option to control it in their BIOS.

4) You need to set the power management to "Minimum power management" in Windows.

My A8N-VM CSM arrived this morning. Buy.com took 4 days. I normally buy only from newegg, but the other guy had it in stock for 0.5 second.

Yeah, I installed the amd cpu driver, cool n'quiet and acpi 2.0 support are both enabled in the BIOS by default, and unfortunately the moment I select minimal power management the machine blue screens. Any other power management setting is ok, and if I uninstall the AMD driver minimal power management is also ok.

It's totally stable with a PCI video card. It'll get corrupted video and halt during a Windows install or if I switch to the onboard after installing the OS.

I'll keep playing with it to see if I can get it stable...

Edit:After corresponding with the Asus tech support they asked me to RMA it. I hope I just got a bad one out of that first batch.

Perhaps the rumors of nvidia recall or manufacturer hold back are true.
As expected, Newegg changed ETA on the 11th to the new date of:
ETA: 11/16/2005

This is the 4th time they extended the date.

They did get a few boards in on one batch a while back, but nothing since then. Looks like those few boards might have slipped out before bugs were fixed or noticed. (TV out for example).

Yeah, I'm getting lots of bugs on my a8n vm csm. I got through the windows install, but every now and then there would be graphical glitches within windows. Another problem is that the HD Audio gets kinda crackly at some points, much worse than other integrated audio. And finally, my tv tuner (ati theatrix 550 pro) doesn't work iwht the mobo.

Well I got it running, but Cool & Quiet doesnt seem to work.

With all options enabled in the bios, and the AMD driver 1.2.2.2 installed, when I would go into Control Panel > Power Options and select "Minimum Power Management" it would lock up the computer.

I had installed the SW IDE drivers so that I could copy over my old IDE HD files to my new SATA drive. I ran the AMD driver 1.2.2.2 again, and this time selected un-install the SW IDE drivers, and I was then able to select Minimal Power Management. It however doesn't appear to work yet.

So I'm gonna guess folks needing to run IDE Hard Drives are screwed atm, and shouldn't try to change the power settings.

Board came with BIOS 403 dated 10/5/05.
Their webpage lists a 303 BIOS for DOS?!

Expected a bit more from Asus even if these just came off the assembly line.

Same thing here. Cool & quiet doens't seem to work. I got the same bios etc. I tried the with both 1.2.2 drivers and the drivers that came with the mobo. Seems pretty buggy to me. My diNovo mouse is acting strange, sometimes it seems to slow down and then "catch up". Worked fine with my last rig. It could be a bug with x2 3800+, but I doubt I am the only dual core user with diNovo. My guess it's somehow bios related.

ive had this board for awhile now, got it from zzf...

having power-up problems and shut-down problems with an antec NEO HE... but from what i hear all asus a8n boards have these problems...

regardless... they are not repeatable, but do re-occur..
i have downloaded beta bios 502... yes ... 502... there is no direct link to it, but if u use the link for the standard bios from asus, u can just change 303 to 502 and u get that version... its a beta.

cool n quiet seems to work fine, no blue screens... im using winxp x64 w/x800xl and booting from a raptor and using a 3-drive sata raid5 array for data....
everything works good other than the occasional inability to power on... (getting new psu soon)..

have tried onboard video and it worked perfectly,, in fact i set theh comp up with onboard, only added the x800xl lateree for gamming...

im using crucial ddr400 ecc ram... 2x512... again, works fine with ecc enabled in bios.

ive used both an opteron 165 and an athlon x2 3800.. at stock speeds.... ocing even 10% causes the board to have bootup issues very quickly... but that could be ram or a plethora of other issues...

at stock it seems stable, and i predict with the new psu it will be 100% as advertised...

i hope a new non-beta bios comes out soon, and then ill be happy with this board...
the audio on board is really awesome...
(its azalia HD audio)

Wow that's sweet. Does it fix the buggy 4 usb ports aswell? I solved my mouse issues by installing extra usb2 device to port 5. No more problems with power loss or lagging. I also have a some beeping noices coming from the rear of the mobo, if I use fading effects in display settings. I guess I'll wait for the official bios.

I upgraded my bios to 502 version and Cool and Quiet seems to be working fine now. But my PCI-slots are not. They worked just fine before bios upgrade. Is some one else having same kind of problems?
