Ok I was setting up my system 3500+ and an Asus A8V deluxe I was going to use a SATA drive for my OS, so I stuck in the CD and away we go.... I pushed F6 and then I installed the drivers from the floppy or I thought I did, it installs them and then says to push enter, I pushed it and then it came up with a windows that says: set up did not find and hard disk drives on your computer, set up cannot continue to quit push F3, I pushed F3 and it says the computer is going to be restarted in 15 seconds but it just freezes there:disgust: I used the make a disk file from the Asus cd it was here: D:\Drivers\Promise\378ATA is that the right one? I also cannot go into the bios I push Delete and it keeps starting up

You may want to check what RAID controller you are trying to install the drive on. If you are trying to install it on the Promise controller or VIA controller. I would recommend installing it on the VIA controller and using the VIA setup raid file instead of the promise. From what I have heard there have been too many problems with the Promise controller. I am currently having a problem of my own with this motherboard. You can read about them on my post. Good luck trying to the other controller.

It was my understading the the Via was for raid...... and the promise was for raid or just plain SATA I might be wrong though, I just tried using the Via drivers and that still did not work, it acts like it is installing them and then it says no hard drive found!

What exact brand/model of keyboard? If it's got a F-lock key like so many of them do now, then you'll need to hit that for the F6 key to work as an F6 key at the Windows Setup screen.

edit: actually if your F3 key is working then that seems to rule out the F-lock thing. What I would do-- well, I would just use my 15000rpm SCSI drives, but if I were you, I would set the Promise controller to IDE mode, use the appropriate Makedisk.exe utility to create the IDE-mode Promise driver floppy, plug the drive into one of the Promise-controlled jacks on the motherboard, and go ahead with the F6 routine. See Section 5 of your manual and remember, there are TWO Makedisk.exe utilities for the Promise. One creates RAID-mode driver floppies, the other creates IDE-mode driver floppies.

After Windows Setup makes its first run through, then you'll need to get the motherboard to use the SATA drive as a boot device and it should carry on.

The SATA1 port is not connected to the Promise controller. Plug the drive into SATA_RAID1, which is connected to the Promise controller. And you did go into the motherboard's BIOS and change the Promise out of RAID mode into IDE mode, right? In the BIOS, that's found under Advanced > Onboard Devices Configuration.

The 378ATA should be the right ones. Oh, and if you have any PATA hard drives in there (which it doesn't sound like you do) then you'd want to unplug them while doing Windows Setup or they may grab drive letter C: away from your SATA drive.

Windows 2003 is Windows Server 2003. You'll want XP.

As long as I'm being a pest do you have your plan in place for avoiding worm infection? Or maybe your CD has Service Pack 2 onboard already? If not, I made a page with some resources and suggestions here. Even if your CD has SP2, you can do some other stuff to enhance your system's security too, like using Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer to look for stuff that Windows Update won't. And there are other suggestions on that first page too.

Since the conectors were called SATA_RAID1 and 2 I thought they were only for raid

Hmmm, maybe your RAM's not getting quite enough voltage or your PSU is having mood swings Could you list out the full specs including brand/model of memory and brand/model of power supply?

hmm it seems to have frozen again here is what I have:
Asus A8V deluxe
3500+ 90nm
One stick on 512 Kingston HyperX 3200
Antec true550

I think I have a dud of a motherboard!!:disgust: I just tried moving my ram to all the slots and it will only work in slot B1, where I first put it since I was not sure if I would have to flash the bios for the 90nm chip...... Well the format has been frozen at 0% for the past 13 minutes

Set your memory voltage to 2.7 volts and make sure the memory module is in slot DIMM_B1.

ok I stuck it at 2.7 and when I got to the windows screen I pushed F6 and this notice is up it says: Set up could not determine the type of computer you have or you have chosen to manully specify the computer type. Select the computer type from the following list, or select other if you have a device support disk provided by your computer manufacturer. There are two things I can choose, standard PC with C-step i846 or Other which should I choose?

Start Windows Setup again and this time press both the F5 and F6 keys at the F6 prompt. When it gets around to it, you'll see where you can pick a variety of computer types. Pick ACPI Uniprocessor PC.

Well I did that but it still is hanging, either right before the lincense comes up or right before it starts to format I also tried to sticks of just Kingston 3200 value ram but it will not even boot up when I have two sticks in I can use just one stick in B1 and it is fine but when I stick two sticks in or put the ram in any other slot it will not start, well it does start just nothing is on the screen I have run memtest86 and it starts up and right off it freezes and then the computer will restart

I learned some more about the A8V Deluxe late last night. You may need to update your BIOS. Since I typed up the instructions, links and pictures and stuff, in this thread, go down to about the 40th post or just CTRL-F search for A8V1008 and you're there.

Hmm well I got really mad at my Asus board early this morning, so I took it out and stuck in a MSI neo2, I wanted to see if it was just my motherboard having problems with the ram because I did memtest again and there were errors all over the place..... But when I stuck everything in the MSI, it started right up I loaded the SATA drivers, installed windows and it as been running fine.... so I don't know if I should take everything back out just to see if the Asus needed the bios update, I am thinking the ram slots somehow just are bad, one weird thing though the MSI board is saying my CPU temp is 5-7 degrees Celsius higher

But sometimes the manual doesnt help.

Hawksballer - have the same problem with my new system, A8V, 3500+, Kingston Hyperx, ocz520, (ATI9600XT -4 now) followed all the instructions, used the SataRaid 1 (promise controller) F6'd at install and loaded the promise drivers. Everything went well for a while, formateed the raptor, installed windows, but when it restarted, the windows screen would come up for 2 seconds and the system would reboot. Tried about everthing. Finally just plugged into the VIA sata1 plug and the system started right up into windows.

Went badck into the bios and disabled the promise controller. reinstalling xp now with just the VIA drivers installed off diskette.

We'll see how it goes.
