Ive always been reading that the hardcore overclockers never touch software tools that do the same and always stick to the bios.

but for those that want to save power / lower noise wouldnt it be useful to have the cpu underclocked for general use and then overclocked when gaming / tasking etc.

used to have a abit board and that had the uguru which allowed on the fly overclocking which was great.

just upgraded to an asus p5k-e and the AI suite on that sucks crap.
It keeps wanting to reboot after I make a change

is there anything better available?

does rmclock have fsb adjustment?
all i cant find is multiplier adjustment

i was hoping for a bigger change than a 8-6 multiplier change (and if i had a 7x multi - it would be practically useless?)

edit: or do u use the throttling feature and downclock your cpu based on % of default clock? - looks like a hassle to manage?

if you want to OC, you should be doing it from the BIOS instead, and not from a software.

either ways AIsuite never worked well for OC-ing in my rig, it always dies and does incorrect OC-ing

i like the good old fashion BIOS method, it works better, and you know exactly what you need to do.

leaving the OC to a software is too big of a risk, it can set the wrong voltage and other stuff, and burn your system after reboot.

Eveytime you make changes to AIsuite it saves the changes then it ask you to reboot, to make those changes into effect.

so if that's the case, might as well do it yourself in the BIOS, it's exactly the same thing.

yes I was planning on OC via bios -
but say I have 8x400 via bios as what I want / can do
but I would prefer to run a lower clock when not gaming - even 1.5ghz would be fine
so how to I get that dual cpu speed profile? speedstep only downclocks to 6x multiplier which would be 2.4ghz and even that is very finicky. eg. it keeps jumping back to 3.2 even when just browsing. If I could manually lock it down to a set speed and have the ability to pump that back up without rebooting I would be pleased.

with ATI tool I can set my graphics card to a <200mhz memory/core profile - saves me a couple of degrees (it would be more but the graphics card has the 2d/3d mode profiling already built in)

ah... that is easy, just enable the Stepping Power Profiles in RMClock

that's is what i mean is waaaaaaaaay better than Asus own software.

sorry to sound like a noob - but how do you know the stepping profiles are working properly?
I might have set it up wrong but cpuz never reports a lower speed than 6x400
there is a cpu throttle clock but how do you know that profile currently engaged?

is c1e just enhanced speedstep?
thats enabled already but on cpuz the frequency keeps jumping around from 6x multiplier to 8x multiplier. I was hoping for manual control. I was also hoping for a larger gap between 6-8x multipliers to be controlled with software (no reboot) not sure if thats possible though
