Tonight i was doing some research and noticed that I applied thermal paste wrong. So i went in to correct it and i saw this.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v163/pc_man83/Caps.jpg

I cant believe this. I am doing a RMA through Newegg right now, Im glad I purchased it before they switched to no warrenting boards. I hope they let me do a advanced replacement.

The computer actaully runs fine, except for a random reboot the other day. My temps are still a little high... 49-50C Idle and 60C load.

Just wanted you guys to see it. Never seen it on Asus, but I have seen plenty on MSI.

Is that on your P5P board?
If so, damn!

That DOES happen on older boards, but on a new board like that, that is a little weird.

I wonder if something happened to the system? power spike?

cripes!!!

Ya on my P5P board. I used to overclock it to 3.7ghz. This was bought on 10/25/04 Kind of pissed me off. Maybe when i get the new one i will see if my overclock is a little more stable.

I recently found some blown caps on my EPOX 8K7A. Can't remember if it was an 8K7A or 8K7A+. It was in my wife's computer and it was acting a bit strange. I opened the case to replace a modem and found about four or five of the larger caps blown. I ended up replacing it with a PCChips $20 board. Everything is running fine after I replaced the EPOX with the PCChips. Now I have USB 2.0!! YAY!! I also have an EPOX 8KHA+ which is older and has been running fine.

The capacitors are the little "cylinder" things. The blown ones are the top 6. Now compare them to the bottom ones. Notice how the blown ones are bulging and you can see a very visible leak on the 3rd one from the left.

Do you think this occured because you overclocked your system? Or was it just wear and tear?

i think this is generally caused from wear and tear, since even msi's older boards had problems with these at stock speeds.

I just cant believe this is happening on an Asus P5 board in 2005
Good grief.
Especially on a board that has a real juice sucking CPU/vidcard slot
And it has nothing to do with "wear and tear". Its non japanese caps.

After everything, this is STILL a problem we have to look for??????????

Very rare for something like this to happen on an Asus board.
Hope you can get it replaced.

This is messed up that they're STILL using the shi t caps today, and no, it's not wear and tear, it's terrible quality tawainese aluminium electrolytic capacitors which are causing this, it's a long standing issue since 2001 or so, see http://www.badcaps.net

F uck ASUS. I know Abit had a huge problem in the past, but I would buy Abit boards these days, they started using all high quality japanese caps ever since this fiasco came to light, they call it "BulletProof technology", which is basically a long winded way of saying "We don't use s hit caps anymore".

I hope this isn't Round 2 of the bad cap MBs again.
But if his Asus MB has crappy caps, you know there are others out there that do to.

My bet is that Abit will come out a winner this round, since they got hammered so bad the last time.
Surely their purchasing dept. stayed with high quality components after the last fiasco.

pcman83,
As a public service, try and get some clearer pics of your Asus MB's bad caps. Think "Macro Mode".

I have an Abit KV8 Pro with all Japanese caps. From what I have heard, there is a sure way to tell a Japanese cap from the cheap ones. The Japanese caps have a 'K' on the top while others have an 'X' or '>-' on them. I believe Rubycon is the maker of the good caps.

Does the power above not want me to upgrade to NF4????

The DFI SLI only has 2 PCI slots and no parallel ports. And MSI are hugely annoying by releasing the Diamond brand, with its separate forum that I can't access! The Asus SLI is in my budget, but can't OC to save it's life, and now tehy're having issues.....

DFI is my favorite but they let me down this time

Ended up going with MSI (1st board = bad) (2nd board = good so far)
Can't ever get it right the first time with MSI lol

I hope articles (and forum discussions) like these will create a better awareness of faulty capacitor problem, and force these manufacturers into accountability mode -- or, the step right before Class Action Lawsuit mode.

Meanwhile, after three motherboard failures due to faulty capacitors myself, next purchase will have to include high quality capacitors, meaning either DFI or ABIT. 2 EPOX EP-8RDA+ and 1 8KHA, all stopped working within an unacceptable 24 month timeframe. Heck, I have a few computer systems more than twenty years old that still boot fine.

Oh, based on principle alone, I've decided on sending a polite and carefully worded RMA request, including relevant articles, pictures, and the specific terms: FTC, Attorney General, BBB, and Small Claims Court. I'm not looking for any damages, just for these motherboards to be returned to their original operational state, entirely at EPOX's cost.

There are tons of manufacturers of capacitors, so it's bullshit to say "good" caps are only made by one manufacturer, I personally have repaired motherboards with blown caps and always get the replacements from mouser.
