I have a Asus Eee netbook from about 2 years ago when my regular laptop for school died on me. I've been using it for web-browsing, hulu, & netflix, as well as some basic ms office work. I'm interested in the Asus tablet but can't quite determine whether it's worth it over my netbook.

Was anyone in a similar situation or would like to weigh in on the situation?

Clean the screen and then breath on it. You will see a grid pattern on the glass.

I haven't been following this thread as much lately, but is that common usage? I'd try to avoid kissing it looking for paterns Kidding aside, don't all touch screens have at least some patern just hard to see.

I dont know if its common, non of my phones have it and this is basically my first tab that i own. I have played with ipads but never that much in depth. I noticed the pattern on day 1 as I inspected every part for defects. I thought it was some processing residue so I cleaned the screen and basically ignored it. But with more and more use (hand grease on the screen) I see it more. It is only when the screen is off so it doesnt really make me concerened but I dont know if this means its a crap screen or if it is normal. A quick google search shows the acer a500 has this also and reports are that they use a crappy screen. I guess when the Transformer sells a lot more units we may hear about this more. I still love my transformer and will continue to enjoy it.

I think it depends on screen size etc... For example I can see it on my epic screen but only in very very specific positions and specific light conditions. I just tried to find them now and couldn't since I am in a semi dark office.

I only noticed the grid pattern when I polished up the screen and was making sure no debris was left on it to install the skinomi screen protector. Which BTW works great and is invisible.

Have you guys found it to be painful to type using the dock keyboard say in google docs or any other application other than the browser? It's fairly slow and almost unusable.

The iconia has a nice screen. It also has usb ports; about hte biggest negative is that the battery life is not quite as good. I have the transformer because it was $75 cheaper and I ordered it before I realized the iconia was available.
-
Soon there will be too many choices; samsung (though it lacks a micro-sd slot), toshiba, vizo, ...
-
Anyways since these all have the same amount of memory and cpu the choices seem to center around weight, screen quality, battery life, ports. Pick what you want; enjoy it - in 12 months it will be obsolete.

I was in a similar predicament as you. I owned a ASUS netbook and I sold it and got the Transformer thinking I would no longer need it. This being my first tablet I was excited at first but now wish I had kept my netbook in hindsight. The tablet is a very nice toy but there are things I miss about my netbook a lot.

I miss being able to simply browse a windows share and stream a video....all types of codec formats. I miss flash and other websites working properly and smoothly without going through some hoops. I miss having my 120gb of storage and the ability to plug in any USB peripheral I wanted. Understand that there are limited amount of apps for Android and many are not for tablets but a phone yet can be used anyway.

I'm not going to list all the positives since I'm still a new user and am learning the device but I think the Android tablets are going to be great sooner rather than later but right now (honeycomb 3.1) seems a tad premature and some of the kinks are still being worked out. I knew this but jumped in anyway due to the excitement of having a new tablet/gadget/toy. If your OK with knowing that being an early adopter has it's share of challenges, you will enjoy the Transformer.

It also depends a lot on what you want to use the tablet for.... For me, I wanted a convenient web browsing, video playing solution. I don't play games or care for all the fancy apps out there on the IPAD. Hulu and Netflix are not officially supported on the tablet. There are some "hacks" to get it to work with mixed results. That's also a big dissapointment for me right now. Another pain point for me is that certain HD video files do not output sound unless I convert to MP4 format. And one last one is that web browsing on flash enabled sites are not yet quite optimized it seems so it runs pretty bad in some cases.

I love the build quality and the option of having the keyboard dock. I purchased the 16gb version and purchased a memory card for storage.

i really wanted a transformer...but i didnt want to have to sell my laptop (11,6" timeline x) to get it. i figure tablets will *really* be (software wise) where i want them in another year. i have the nook color with androind/cm7 and its nice, but not perfect....though it is a lot cheaper than anything else available right now

Heck, the hardware will be there too. Tegra 2 is really at its best at a 7 inch resolution or less, once you get to very high resolutions the GPU can't keep up. The quad core next gen will be a big leep.

For people using Splashtop, do you notice the high cpu usage? My laptop is over the minimum specs but the lag makes it almost unusable (2ghz C2D 3gb ram).
