I know alot of people are interested in this thing. Citrus Micro is now taking preorders for it. No money down, when they get actual details on it, they will call you in the order of the preorder requests they received. If you are even remotely interested it would probably be good to get on the preorder list early. I (and other ATers) have ordered from CM before and they are reliable company:

Thanks for the heads up. I'm waiting for the 1001, assuming it is priced reasonably.

I've been waiting on these. At $199, it was more or less an impulse buy. I know the difference isn't much, but when you hit that $250 mark ($239 + shipping) it starts begging the question of whether or not it's advantageous over a regular laptop that can often be had for a hundred or so more, but with much faster hardware.

For me the main appeal of this is its size, laptop are too clunky to actually use on your lap. But if the final price for the base model hits the $250 mark, its gets less attractive.

This looks pretty awesome and it's the first I've heard of it. I'm typing this on my laptop but it's far too big to bring to class and type notes on. The specs are obviously weak but who cares I'm typing notes! I'd drop a couple bills to have something I can bring with me to class and do a lil websurfing on. Anyone have any more news on the availability of these date wise or specs on the different price levels?

The eee doesn't look appealing anymore after checking out the LCD in action at notebookreview.com

"I'm sure a Calculus and Biology book smashed up against it could also have bad results." -NoteBookReview.com. That's not good. I typically just toss my thinkpad into my bookbag without a case. With a case, the laptop would be much bigger. Too bad they didn't compare it to other small laptops like the Thinkpad X series or Sony or others.

We use my wife's laptop hooked to my Sony Ericsson W300i cell phone (via USB - used as a modem) to surf while on road trips. Any idea on whether this would be possible on this PC? I realize it may require installing XP, but this laptop just seems perfect for that.

I'm not sure I give notebook review 5 stars for credibility. Solitaire is not a "intense" game and "penguin racer" (tux racer) is at 7 years old. So i wouldn't really consider that intense, especially considering that even low end laptops have reasonable builtin graphics nowadays. To me, I would be amazed if ANY computer or laptop you got nowadays couldn't play a game made 7 years ago.

PS. anyone else find it ironic they include the windows key on the keyboard. I guess it makes sense, since I'd be installing that first thing, but it still surprises me a little.

EDIT: I'm not trying to knock the EEPC, but rather the reviewer on notebook review who doesn't seem to know that much about notebooks. There are a lot of strong/flexible materials that are used nowadays, same as on Dells. Titanium, etc... They bend, but they are not plastic. The writer of the review didn't bother to note whether they actually ARE made of plastic or if they're made out of a stronger material, that just happens to be flexible.

Yeah seriously, the thing costs $250. Its an amazing deal even considering it does remind me of old mac screens and looks kinda ugly

For those looking at this review, be sure to note that the specs aren't even close to that any more.

When I first saw the specs and the price I was definately in for one... Then the price changed and the specs aren't even close to the announced specs.

I think the cheap model $250 is a celeron 900 w/256mb ram 2gb disk no camera...

I'm signed up for one. It's portable enough I'm hoping the specs will match up well enough so that we all won't be disappointed with what actually is shipped.

real specs

Lame. for $500 I got an Acer:
14.1" screen
t2080 1.73ghz
1gb ddr2 667mhz
80gb hd
integrated intel
dvdrw dl
vista ultimate

$400 from the eee pc will get me trash for specs, even if it is smaller. I would want to instal windows... xp at least and there's no way in heck you can even think about doing this on these.

The 701 is confirmed to run XP with ASUS driver support (supposedly they'll make them available at launch) but I personally wouldn't feel comfortable doing it on anything less than the 8GB model to store a minimal install of XP along with a minimal install of Office (something tells me Word, Powerpoint, and MAYBE Excel) to have some room to spare.

You'd easily want a 1GB fixed paging file on this thing to augment the 512MB of RAM (and since the storage is SSD...bonus). I don't know whether you can switch out the DIMM easily or not.

The only way you'd be able to do XP on a 4GB model is to constantly have a clone of your squeaky-clean just-installed-and-updated OS/Office on a 4GB thumbdrive ready for reimaging at the first sign of Bloatius Windowus, and keep all your documents/music/media files on the removable memory cards.

EDIT: And for people worried about the fragility - if this thing hits as big as some people think it will, somebody'll make a case for it.

Just run ubuntu off the SD or usb flash drive. Why would you want to run MSword or Power Point? I'd use the tools that's offered by Google.

Would be a great deal if it supports Windows 2000. Lighter in footprint (in terms of space) and for me just as robust.
