Monarch...

I didn't know that this was discontinued. Did Asus do a rev on the board or what? Too bad I just built a system with an Epox board last week. I would have jumped at this one. Good Luck

that's an awesome price..... I'm using the board now... paid $150 for it new around the time it came out... I think what these are are returns you just have to send in yourself, most likely the ones with the RZ033 (or something like that) capacitors that were all defective...... i really don't think this board has been discontinued though... maybe its only the ones with those capacitors that have been discontinued?

Now why do you think it is so cheap? You would be buying a $150 mobo for $50. Can't be that ASUS is refurbing the boatload of K8V's that had bad capacitors. Of course you think that you can just contact ASUS if there is a problem.
THINK AGAIN!

Well, it does say NOT NEW and that it is from the manufacturer. This leads me to believe that either the warranty is the original but passed onto you, or Asus did in fact repair those. With mobos, a lot of simple things can happen that can later be repaired. This could range from broken NB fans, bad BIOS's or even bad capacitors. Whatever it is, it might sometimes be more profitable to just repair those minor mistakes and resell the mobos.

But... $50 is very, extremely hot!

There are tons more motherboards and other stuff listed in their Refurbished Parts area. Just click on the blue button on the left side of the page marked "Refurbished Parts".

This is why; (www.Hocp.com)

ABIT Does 1GHz HT Bus:
XbitLabs is telling us that ABIT's new VIA-based "KV8 Pro" sporting the K8T800Pro chipset is already selling in the Pacific Rim. It is a socket 754 board though. Interesting, but not ground breaking for sure.

The main idea of ABIT KV8 Pro is additional performance brought by 1000MHz HyperTransport bus, but not the support for new processors in new packaging or PCI Express bus. The chipset that powers ABIT KV8 Pro ? VIA K8T800 Pro ? does not bring PCI Express capabilities or any other architectural advantages apart from higher frequency of the HyperTransport bus that connects central processing unit to computer?s I/O.

your link above is no good.

This thread is about the ASUS K8V, not the ABIT KV8

the board might be cheaper because asus is trying to clear inventory to make way for new baords that implements the same 1 ghz technology as abit

Here is the review: Review link

The SK8V is ASUS? second plunge in to the wonderful world of the AthlonFX processor. Utilizing the VIA K8T800 chipset, the board has full support for the AthlonFX and Opteron line of processors, as well as PC3200 Registered DDR RAM operating in Dual Channel mode. Keeping current with trends, ASUS chose to make this motherboard a feature complete solution, requiring the addition of processor, RAM, video card, and drives for a complete system. The following components are integrated in to the motherboard itself: 3 ATA-133 ports; 4 SATA-150 ports; 8 USB 2.0 capable ports (4 in rear panel, and 2 onboard headers supporting 2 ports each); 2 IEEE 1394a capable ports (1 in rear panel, and 1 onboard header supporting 1 port); 3Com Gigabit Ethernet; ADI 6 channel audio featuring RCA output ports; integrated WIFI capable header; and serial, parallel, and PS/2 port support.

Newegg has the same prefurb piece for $45. It is the same thing that is direct refurb from Asus.

Asus have a lot of bad cap. board that they repaired and now sell as white board refurb. I have deal with it before and know how these things work.

It comes in a white board with only the mainboard and no accesories is included. You have to paid $20 to have Asus sending the accesories which contains pieces of cable, usb firewire connector and SPDIF audio port. The warranty is still 3 year standard from Asus same as the new part. Good thing is if the board work, it will be as good as buying it new, with same warranty and support, all that. If you are a season pc builder, the extra accesories will not be missed much except maybe the audio part and the backplate.

Good deal, either from newegg or monarch.

This really, really bothers me. K8-based mobos are a fairly recent thing, are they not? The whole "bad cap" issue, has been known, publically, for several years now, and to the mobo companies, probably a bit longer than that. This seems to indicate that the problem with bad caps IS STILL WITH US? How can Asus, a supposedly top-quality (or perhaps "formerly top-quality") mobo mfg, continue to ship boards from the factory with bad caps mounted? Irresponsible, if not downright actionable, and at the very least unreasonable, from a customer POV.

It's been a long time since the Abit 440BX boards and the BP6/VP6 boards with bad caps. To find out that Asus is STILL having bad cap problems is very unsettling. Remind me to avoid Asus boards, still.

The bad caps could be caused by the users power supply or a power surge.

They could also be caused by the regulators and associated components on the motherboard itself. I have repaired a number of defective motherboards with defective (domed) caps and they weren't all made by ASUS.

These are very low voltage electrolytic caps (6 to 10 volts). It doesn't take much to overstress them, causing them to fail.

I don't think using higher quality caps would put an end to this problem.

You are correct, since the caps directly attach to the powersupply, poor regulation could kill that component. Although, higher quality caps won't help, but higher voltage ratings on those definitely would as well as many other solutions.

Oh well its Asus's loss, our gain
