I just started looking at their site... boy have they morphed themselves in the last three years... did they borrow millions to fund all these product diversification?

anyway, their notebooks look as sleek as SONY VIAOs...

Samsung and Fujitsu following behind, IMHO.

Dell and IBM, iffy... but IBM awesome build feel.

anyway,

How are Asus, buildwise and relability?

Not too many channels of purchase, so unlike HP, Compaq, and Dell, won't be many discount/deals to look for.

Is there a 'best' place to consider buying them? Are they cheap since they're a 'new' comer, or we won't find much price differential.

Buy One HERE!

Look at his forum for more info.

Asus get great reviews (especially their flagship). Really solid.

The website I linked above offers the most competitive price and the guy offers exceptional customer service. He literally responds to emails within the hour.....I wish all customer support was this good....btw, I don't own an Asus or have bought from this guy...I just know he's the real deal!

hmm for 1293.00, it's this asus

http://www.ynot2k.com/products/laptops/z71a/z71a.htm

i priced out the same Dell 6000 two days ago and it was about 1100 with the ongoing dell deal of course.

Both are integrated graphics.

But there's the Dell 6000D now with ATI graphics...

But this asus is thin and sleek, not like the 6000D

They will begin to have sonoma chip set lappys in a few weeks and even one with the Nvidia 6600 card in it. I have been chatting with one of their reps on AIM for a while now...

The new Voodoo M515 has almost identical specs as the Asus Z71V. Both boast the 533MHz FSB Intel chipset and the PCI Express Nvidia 6600-128MB. The M515 with 2GB memory and the other premium options that Voodoo offers will cost you the better part of $4,000. The Z71V with 1GB memory/60 Gig Hitachi w 8MB cache @7200 rpm/Dual layer DVD RW can be had for $2150. I have no doubt that Voodoo tech support will be excellent, but if you're not intimidated by the hardware and technical issues inherent to personal computing, I suspect you could get by with either machine without a lot of vendor tech support. I love the paint jobs on the Voodoos, but not ~$1500-$1700 worth of love.

I have an ASUS M3N it is one year old.
It has run with absolutely no problems.
Mine is
PM 1.4
512 megs ram
now 80 gig hdd.

I bought mine with all the hardware installed, no branding applied.

What I like is that it is much more like a desktop pc in terms of configurability. If I bought a Dell (for example) the limited bios options and restore cd would chafe me.

I realize that the flexibility I want (separate DIY windows install) cost me, but I am happier this way.

The only thing I am not crazy about is the optical drive. (Matsushita)

Proportable has EXCELLent communication and support. I even chatted with Justin over there for like 30 min on AIM and I wasn't even a customer. Be warned their prices do reflect this.

The ODM (Original design manufacturer) of the M515 is Asus. It is a Z71 varient. See here for more info.

There is a member on this forum who runs a laptop store and specializes in building bare bones Asus laptops. Drop on by and post a thread in the Asus section, I'm sure he would be more than happy to help you.

Sager is a brand name, just like Asus or HP. Sager's seem to be good quality, but I don't think they offer as many options as the bigger companies. From my knowledge, Sager buys notebook shells from ODM companies; so you should be able to get a "Sager" notebook from the ODM manufacturer at a better price. Check out this ODM buyer's guide

I also chatted with Justin over at ProPortable to find out more about Asus lappies but my biggest problem is that no body that I know of stocks Asus lappies so I can go check out the difference between them and other brands in person. If anyone knows of a place near Troy, Michigan that stocks them, I would really appreciate it. I need to see in person before I buy.

abc, if you're interested in the V6V then you need wait for our in-depth review on it
We've got a first impressions, but the full review should be out in 2 weeks max. It is a hot notebook, but has VERY limited availability in the US. Check it out and if you have any specific questions that can't wait for the review, feel free to PM me and I'll see what details I can get for you

hi, you know, I think I HAD been but i just noticed it is a regular 15" screen (non wide)...

I've had a laptop the last 4yrs with such a screen... so that was a big downer.

I'm actually now interested in the W3V, I think it's called... not out yet

14" widescreen... now that is rare, only HP compaq has one like that I believe.
Only bad thing is it's only a 64MB? videocard.

like I said, my 4yr old laptop needed to be replaced, last yr.

As mentioned in the above article and a quite a few threads both at this forum and notebookforums.com, a number of retailers use Clevo as an ODM (including Sager, Voodoo, Hypersonic, Alienware, Falcon Northwest, etc).

You might check here for some better deals, and for comparison buying purposes. Reseller ratings here.
