Ok Whats up with this Mboard? at first bootup I have to set it to 100 fsb.. then when it gets into windoze I can restart hit the del key and up fsb all the way to 142..sometimes..and sometimes it locks up and I have to start all over at 100 again. then go up to 140. So anyway what gives is this unusual or common practice with this board? also I am using an ISA modem and it sets up in windoze device manager says all is good but when I go to modems and do diagnostics it says it cant communicate.

.
Here are the specs
asus p3v4x bios 1005 ics clock gen
p3 700e cbo
MSI 6905 slocket
Alpha HS fan

antex sx 830 300W
Plextor 8432 ide secondary slave
maxtor 45 gig ata 100 7200
maxtor ata 100 controller card(pci slot 2)
creative geforce gts 64meg(agp)
linksys pciII ethernet card(pci slot 4)
Aureal sq 2500 (pci slot 5)

Thanks for any insight.

Are you cooling the clock generator? If not, get an old 486 heatsink, cut it down to size, and use Artic Silver Epoxy on it.

Even to post@133? I have said heatsink cut down and ready to install BTW

No epoxy how about superglue on corners and HS compound in center?

Have you tried putting your ram in slot1? You may also be hitting the "ceiling" of you chip....they can do some really weird things at the limit. Have you installed the Via 4in1 drivers yet? If so, do you have the newer ones? Don't use the 4.26 that's out-they have been kind of bugy. Use the 4.25. What BIOS are you using? This mobo has had some problems running in the 140-142 range since the beginning. Some people have had some success using the newer BIOS. The most current out is 1006.002 Beta.

1006.002 BIOS

Also go to Overclocker's Ausralia. They have a category in their forums devoted exclusively to the P3V4X.

I am using bios 1005 and 4in 1 4.25. I guess my most important question is how do I get this POS to boot at anything other than 100 FSB.... I can do a restart out of windows and del into bios then set to 133 even 140 No prob ... Just seems like a lot of hassle.. and a lot of aggravation.
Thanks for the links I have been cruising the Overclock AAU boards as well as here.

Moved ram to slot 4 changed undocumened jumper to 3.6v ..no better..
so how about the superglue/HS compound?

Superglue/HS compound would probably work.. just be lite on the glue. I have this board (for sale actually it's rock solid, and i was easily able to take a slocketed chip to 980 without much effort. You don't mention anything about CPU core voltage. You will probably need 1.8 1.85 or so, and a nice hsf on your processor. I hit 980mhz with just a golden orb, if you have a decent fan (not a gorb ;-) and a half-decent chip, then 933mhz should be pretty easy to obtain with this board (and the VIA drivers shouldn't have much to do with this...)

ok I think I got it somewhat figured out. On my Bx Master board I didnt have to set jumpers for Vcore ... you just set them in bios ... BUT on the p3v4x I had to manually set it. So it boots up fine now @ 140 FSB.. and I even got it to boot and load win 98se and run sandra at 150!! SWWEEEETTT!! Now I just gotta work out a few bugs in the bios and it should be good to go.But I think yur right and I am gonna invest in an asus slocket. Any tips for bios settings? Oh and I cant seem to get Unteal Tournament to run. It detects the 3d device I select clik next and nothing. wait, cntl-alt- del, UT not responding... Even at 100 FSb...And I had it running once before I reset config in Bios(b4 I set voltage on slocket.
Any how thanks for all Ideas and suggestions.

Kavok;

Congrats. Sometimes it's just the simple things that keep you back from the higher overclocks
