Asus P3V4X and PIII 1 GHz

I own an Asus P3V4X and a PIII 733 cpu. I am going to upgrade to a 1GHz CPU. Can this motherboard support this? It only has a slot 1 connection, so I would need a socket 370 conversion card. Anyone who has any experience with this motherboard and putting faster CPUs in it than it was spec'd for, please let me know. What all do I need to do, and what do I need to buy?

The P3V4X can handle a 1GHz Coppermine just fine.
There are Slot1 1GHz Coppermines available if you don't want to buy an adapter. Their becoming a bit hard to find now though, and tend to be a bit more expensive then the FCPGA 1GHz processors.

If you decide to go with the coppermine Socket 370 you will need the adapter card. There were several minor issues that came up when using the adpater cards in the P3V4X mobo. Some adapter cards caused registry error windows to come up after booting. Usually the problem was fixed by re-seating the adapter card in the Slot 1 or by purchasing a different brand adapter card.

Stay away from the generic adapter cards. I had three different types including the one from ASUS (which their tech support recognized a problem with, but they never acknowledged the problem officially).
I got the best luck using the IWILL SLOCKET II. The adpater card is really fortified and it designed more like a Slot 1 processor and it appears to seat in the Slot 1 very tightly. Some of the generic cards are light and could be subject to vibration from the processor fan and poor seating.

I have found a resonably priced slot 1 1 GHz. So, I won't have to worry about the adaptor. When I enter the new cpu, do I just set the motherboard to 800+ speed? Or do I need to download the newest update for the mobo to detect the Gig?

I have a P3V4X also and have contemplated upgrading to a 1ghz. I had thought about the slotket idea so if i want to use the cpu later in another set-up. May I inquire where you found the slot 1 at?

Recently I upgraded my Cel 300a @ 450 to a P3 700 @ 933 which I purchased from .Compuwiz1. I decided to get the FC-PGA and an adapter card just in case my mb dies. Those slot-1 mb's are becoming hard to find and I didn't want to have a cpu I couldn't find a replacement board for. I purchased the Asus 370-dl adapter from Techstore.comfor only $12 and it has worked fine. I would recommend the FC-PGA/adapter card just for this reason.
