update, i just found out something. it recognizes in control panel/device manager/disk drives/maxtor/volume as a 300gb hdd and it says 127gb formatted and the rest unallocated. could it be that i just need to repartition?

Check this out
IIRC, an add-on drive can be re-partitioned and formatted using Disk Management features via Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management. But I don't think this can be used on the boot drive.Originally posted by: JohnTheLuck
Guys,
If I remember correctly, the Windows XP installer doesn't support drives larget than 127GB. I had the same problem on my last install. I installed SP1, and then run Partition Magic to increase the size of my partition. I don't know if you install using a XP SP1 or XP SP2 you have the same problem.
Is there a better way to handle this?
