asus p4b533 with maxtor 300gb

got any idea? it recognizes the drive in WinXP as a 127gb.

What is reported during POST? If the BIOS sees the full capacity, then its not a motherboard issue. Its Windows XP requiring SP1 or later, or a registry modification. The reg mod can be downloaded from Maxtor:

Maxtor Big Drive Enabler (you must have SP1 or higher)

Or, you can just download the Intel Application Accelerator (for Intel chipsets), which also contains the registry fix. Before installing the Intel Application Accelerator (IAA), you should have SP2 installed. Some reports of serious problems have been noted when applying SP2 after the IAA.

If the full capacity isn't reported at POST, you need the latest release BIOS:

BIOS version 1015 for P4B533 (NOT P4B533-E, P4B533-V, P4B533-X, or other variant)

Aflash V2.21 Utility (DOS)

thanks for the links.

i did the maxtor enabler and it enables this 48-bit thing and restarted my computer, but the HDD still doesn't show its full capacity. (only showing 127gb)

yes i can see it at post for 300gb and i have installed intel application accelerator. any idea?

i'm running sp2.

update, i just found out something. it recognizes in control panel/device manager/disk drives/maxtor/volume as a 300gb hdd and it says 127gb formatted and the rest unallocated. could it be that i just need to repartition?

i just tried to use windows xp cd to boot from and repartition the HDD since i do not have a 3rd party partition utility handy but it still only sees a 127gb HDD.

do you think a 3rd party utility would change that? anyone's got an idea?

I am having this same problem, can you please tell me what you used to repartition your disk I downloaded that patch and everything already and am still screwed.

If I remember correctly, the Windows XP installer doesn't support drives larget than 127GB. I had the same problem on my last install. I installed SP1, and then run Partition Magic to increase the size of my partition. I don't know if you install using a XP SP1 or XP SP2 you have the same problem.

Is there a better way to handle this?

IIRC, an add-on drive can be re-partitioned and formatted using Disk Management features via Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management. But I don't think this can be used on the boot drive.
