Many were getting a jump to 640X480 resolution or reboots.
It is documented by Intel and fast write disable seems to fix this.

I did get this myself with my ATI AIW 9700 Pro but since I did a
new install using the format from Asus Board - Mr Steveo Guide
I have had fast writes enabled and write combining checked without
any issues. I am running at 128 for agp aperature as well.

Agreed

Never did all that c**p until this 9700 Pro but way willing
to try anything when I got those weird problems.

Maybe nvidia and Win98 would be less aggravation.

I usualy stick to a certain order when I install XP, but I have never had any "major" problem with XP at all. I have also never had a problem with my 9700 pro. I liked 98SE, but I really like XP, so I guess I may have just been one of the lucky ones. Maybe I will try a dual boot and see what I am missing...

Win98??? . Well, I don't run XP either, I like Win2K. The Fat32 file system is terrible, poor memory management (particularly the lack of protected memory support) are among the old 9X OS many flaws. I'll stay with 2K until there is a need (hyperthreading) for me to go to XP. I was hoping there would be a 2K patch to support it.

well....after figuring out the ram stuff, I have begun to oc.

And something strange is happening.

at fsb 159 mhz my system is totally stable no problems. cas 2-2-2-6, vcore 1.5, temp 42 degrees celcius. (p4 2.66)

but if i set my fsb to 160 mhz my system crashes when loading win xp.
I have tried all settings; lowering the cas settings, increasing vcore, agp and ddr voltage, adjusting the pci clock...everything!

I've tried both bios 1,03g and the tweaked one (based on 1,04). I've tried replacing my corsair 3200c ram with ordinary ddr pc 2100 ram. But nothing helps.
Is it the board thats broken??

just seems strange that my board or cpu, can "hit the wall" with no previous warning

not really ~ just make sure you can run cas 222 for best performance.

if you dont overclock ~ any pc2100 (or better) should do.

don't overclock?! After reading this thread there's no reason not too!!

I'm planning to do an agressive OC if I get this, I guess a more appropriate question would be, am I better off with one stick of 512 DDR or two sticks of 256 DDR? What does this "dual channel DDR" mean exactly?

I'd like to get the memory that will handle a good OC.
