Due to a hard drive failure I am installing 2 new ones. I am wanting to set them up as a RAID 1 configuration to help protect from data loss. I have ordered 2 Western Digital Caviar RE WD1600YS SATA drives from NewEgg. Drive link.

Has anyone set up this board with RAID 1 (I'm sure plenty have)? And what is the best way to do it? The manual shows a Intel RAID controller along with a Promise RAID controller. This is the first time dealing with a RAID configuration and any help would be great.

I have the ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe board here

I have the P4P800 Deluxe which, as with your board, has the ICH5R for the southbridge. The ICH5R only supports RAID 0 with sata drives. Sorry to break it to ya.

I have a P4P800 Deluxe (no "E") and was wondering if I can add a SINGLE SATA drive to this mobo.

The only one I could really find was the P4P800-E deluxe, according to the Asus site it supports:

ICH5R South Bridge:
-2 x UltraDMA 100/66/33
-2 x Serial ATA, RAID 0,1 function
Promise 20378 RAID controller:
-1 x UltraDMA 133 support two hard drives
-2 x Serial ATA
-RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 0+1, Multiple RAID

Kater1: Ensure that the Promise controller is enabled in BIOS. Then follow the manuals directions to get into the controller setup and configure the RAID 1 array.

bmaltz: you can add a single drive on your mobo version. just make sure your BIOS is configured correctly, the two ports will support RAID 0...you'll have to disable RAID for the ports if you want to use them for single drives. hell, it may even work as a single if RAID is enabled..but I doubt it. I hate on board RAID sh!t, every manufacturer does it different.

I set-up RAID 1 using the intel raid onboard. Is working great for me.

Thanks

I didn't know they were able to add RAID-1 functionality to the ICH5-R. I was only reading from my manual. I also didn't know they added a Promise SATA controller to the -E Deluxe. Sorry for the confusion.
