Looking at getting one of these 2 mbds, with following setup...
P4 2.4GHZ (533FSB), 512MB RAM (PC2700 Crucial), RADEON 9700 (non-pro)

Have heard of problems with the P4S8X and the Radeons, but not so much with the P4PE. And according to the compatibility charts at Rage3d.com, there are no reported problems with the P4PE, unlike the P4S8X. I'm a a bit stuck on this one. Both boards i'm looking at have Lan + Firewire (which i want), so it just seems a question of performance and reliability.

All advice much appreciated...

I see that the P4S8X supports AGPx8, unlike the P4PE, but is that going to be a noticeable thing, either now or in the near future?

i dont know about sis chipsets....heh

however if you plan to overclock, the onboard sound will probably crap out over 150fsb...

also, the difference between 4x agp and 8x agp right now is negligible
even 4x agp isnt currently being used to its full potential...

i would go with the pe board. reasons are that the sis 648 chip only supports 3 banks of memory (i have 512 stick of 333 that is double sided so cant add another double sided stick ) and that the sis648 from what i hear does not support hyper threading so you would be cut off from upgrading to it durther down.

i own a MSI 648 max-L and am looking forward to the newer intel boards coming out that support dual channel ddr and agp 8.

P4PE for sure/ Get an I845PE board over the SIS648 boards. I tried 3 SIS 648 boards and settled on the I845PE Asus P4PE.
