Hey all,

Built a Conroe E6600 system about 6 weeks ago, and this issue started the day I built it.

I have a Plextor PX-708A IDE drive, as well as 3 SATA HDs. in the BIOS, the Jmicron controller is enabled and set to IDE. Current driver version is 1.16.1.0 (8/23). Oddly, the latest version on Softpedia is dated 9/23 and is 1.14.0.1, and on Asus' site, it's 1.12.07.00 dated 9/1.

anyway, sometimes when writing CDs or while doing DAE (digital audio extraction), i'll get really bad mouse lag.. something I never had on my previous system with this drive. It's to the point where I can't use the computer. I move the mouse and 5 seconds later it will catch up. It happens in bursts, and stops immediately once the drive isn't writing or active. It happens most often when it's struggling to read through errors on a CD.

Anybody else have this issue with their P5B and an IDE optical drive?

Steps I'm about to take:

- try the 1.14.0.1 driver (it seems as though i updated to the new version through Windows Update on 9/29)

- check to make sure i'm set as master in the jumper

anything else I could try?

thanks!

Do you have your mouse hooked up through PS2 or USB? If you have it hooked up to PS2 then switch to USB and if it is hooked up through USB switch it to PS2. I know you dont have that option with all mice, but if you do, try it out. That isnt really a long term solution to your problem, but if it works, it may help you in the short term.

Yes, check to verify that the drive is operating in DMA mode.

You can check this in Device Manager. I can't give you a direct path to the properties of this nonstandard JMicron controller, but in general it's under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers > Primary/Secondary IDE Channel (depending on where the drive is connected to) > Advanced Settings.

See if you can find that property page for your controller, and check if the drive is in DMA mode. If it isn't then here lies the problem.

Fixed.

I agree with yehuda- check DMA. I had this same issue along with sound popping & cracking & it turned out my drives were running in PIO mode due to a fairly regular data access problem. After windows has issues accessing a drive a certain number of times it will set the drive back to PIO & you have to reset it.

Yeah I checked DMA after I posted. it's fine, and i'm rocking a USB mouse.

I'm at work right now but I'll double check when I get home.

FWIW, ASUS site has a 1.17.04.00 beta driver available for download now - looks to be about 6 weeks old, but listed as beta.

I have the same issue with the mouse and getting the dvd rom and dvd burner drives to work, both the drivers have correct jumpers.

What DallasFlier suggested worked - I'm using the beta 1.17.4.0 JMicron driver and I haven't had any problems since. Forgot to thank him for that.. thanks!

BTW, i was having the same issue as the OP where my DVD burner was basically unuseable, & that beta JMicron driver seems to have fixed it.

Thanx for the link.

That sounds like when I try to run a old disc in my optical dvd rw, the Windows hourglass icon comes up and freezes the program or explorer box, and then freezes the entire computer. The mouse don't work, none of the keyboard commands work. You have to take out the dirty disc and fling it hard against the wall. That's the only way to get the computer to run again. Then Windows screen refreshes and works fine again.
