Asus P5B Deluxe MB Temps

Hi all,

Sorry for posting a new topic about this, but I asked in another topic and got no response, and my searching has me going in circles...

My rig:
Asus P5B deluxe, Intel e6400 (L2), 2GB Patriot extreme performance ddr2-800, tuniq tower, Nzxt Apollo case with 3 fans (2 intake, 1 exhaust - all 120mm), x-fi FPS, eVGA 8800GTS...

Anyway, my rig is up and running, stable, at 3.01Ghz (430x7) for several days. It passes 24 hours of Orthos with no errors and has been editing and gaming for days.

Everything is great, there's just one thing that concerns me.. the MB temp. In both Asus PC Probe and Speedfan (I think it is listed as 'system' in speedfan) it shows as 47C ALL the time - on load, idle, everything. I know Probe sets a warning at 45C, and I've seen others with the same system and similar speeds with temps in the 30s... so what could this be? CPU temps are fine, everything is stable, and I see NO fluctuation of the 47C temp... maybe the sensor is bad? Should I be concerned about this? Any input would be a big help... I do NOT have the included fan installed because of what the warning said (about disturbing airflow) - should I try it?

Many thanks.

With my system (specs in sig, CPU is at 1.46V according to AsusProbe) I get MB idle temps around 37-39c (depending on ambient air) and load of 41-42, I don't think I've seen it hit 45. This is in a P182B with 2 exhaust fans on low (~800-1000rpm, not moving much air) and a lower chamber fan near the HDD's on medium (~1400rpm).

47c does seem high. Try taking the side panel of your case off, and checking the temp in Windows from a cold boot (leave the PC off for 5min to lower the mb temp to ambient room temp). Also try blowing a floor fan at your open case to see if it drops (make sure the fan isn't too close as the motor is likely not shielded from EMR). It should drop to the 30's, otherwise something is broke.

Thanks for your reply - from what I can tell the sensor is OK... I think this weekend I am going to pull the heatsinks off the the North- and Southbridge and apply AS5, as well as pull the silly "asus" cover off the NB heatsink. I'll also try some better cable management and see if that helps my airflow at all... the side intake fan SHOULD be blowing right down on the NB so hopefully removing those minor modifications will help. I'm still torn about the NB fan that is included, though... to use or not. From what I can tell it seems to orient to blow air TOWARD the processor - AKA opposite of normal airflow -- why the heck would this be? Am I even right? The thing also looks kinda dinky - would it even do anything? Thanks again for your time.

Anyone who's interested...

I did what I planned - removed north and southbridge heatsinks and reapplied thermal compund (used AS5) and also pulled the "asus" cover off the NB heatsink.. the included fan did not fit on the heatsink because of my Tuniq tower. I also reseated my tuniq, FWIW.

Well, my mobo temps went from 47 all the time to 40 idle and 42 load. Much better! And my core temps are a few degrees cooler, too - and this is all before the AS5 has had time to settle in.

I'd say this is a very worthwhile little exercise! I also did the vdroop pencil mod and am about to try and improve my OC!

Wish me luck!
