This board was suppose to run 45nm chips but I found it won't run any of the 45nm Exxx series so I have to get a Q6600 instead of a E8500.

Now I found out it won't support 8Gb or ram according to the supplier...GRRRRRRR

Anyone know for sure ?

It does support 8GB however.

There's a sticker saying it will support a 1333 FSB and 45nm CPU's....LOL'd

I rang the place I bought it from, they said to me hands down 8Gb was a dream, I should of tried the asus forums first so applogies for that

As well does his own link "Support Intel® next generation 45nm Multi-core CPU".

Doesn't anyone check CPU support charts? P5B-Plus supports both dual and quad 45nm processors with the latest BIOS (1103 BETA). Check supported processor models.

Quick Update :

I spoke to chillblast ( here in the UK) they said to me dont even bother trying 8GB , they said it will be unstable and causes BSODs'

I am little miffed about the " yes it does - no it doesnt" conflicting statements :-(

The reason I am after 8GB is I do alot of Vmware testing.

There shouldn't be a problem using 8GB as long as you stay away from JEDEC-bending 'l33t overklokerz' garbage that must be plied with excessive voltage to operate reliably.

You should be fine with RAM that operates at JEDEC timings and voltage (1.8V +/- 0.1V), though you may ultimately need to settle for lower operating frequencies any time the maximum supported DRAM configuration is populated using unbuffered DIMMs (no matter the chipset).

you would trust a CSR, the probably is no better than a best buy CSR; to tell you that it doesn't work over Asus specifications?

The simple and easiest solution, would be if you already have the 8GB, try it. No go, replace the board...

Meh I have 4GB Crucial and 2GB of Gskil laying around, all sticks are 1Gb each so not chance :-(

I reckon I could do with a new board anyhow - but Im going to wait a year

4 x 2GB unbuffered modules are still hit-or-miss, even with newer chipsets like P35 and P45, due to electrical loading and other factors.

Your best bet is to look for DDR2-800 modules with 5-5-5-15 or 5-5-5-18 timings that do not require more than 1.9V, with the expectation of operating them @ DDR2-667. If they will operate @ DDR2-800, great, but I wouldn't expect it.

You will find many products with those timings that require 2.0V or 2.1V. Those modules are actually using overclocked DDR2-667 or inferior DDR2-800 chips. If they were using decent DDR2-800 chips, they would not need excessive voltage to operate at DDR2-800 timings.

I would recommend these for high degree of compatibility:

CORSAIR XMS2 (2GB x 2) DDR2-800

Mushkin (2GB x 2) DDR2-800

not to revive an old thread, but I am wanting to upgrade the cpu on Asus P5b-plus. The Asus website talks about supporting the Intel e8200 and e8400 via beta drivers, but I was wondering if anyone has had success using these processors with this board. The OP indicated that he could not get them to work.

Comments appreciated.

It may worrk if you mod it's bios using the commando's bios you extract the memory tables and p6 cpu microcode. Should be possible using MMTool I'll see what I can find.

According to this chart it supports both since 1102 bios. It says something about a chipset limitation but thats irrelevant sine the FSB would be well past that.

What they say and what is true seem to be in major conflict. I have been reading all over various forums finding many problems with 45nm chips working with p965 boards. I don't think its worth the risk unless I can find some definitive success stories.

I've modified the bios for you, extracted the P6 Microcode which is what they patch to add new cpu's. The commando seems to have no problems with 45nm's.

The latest bios for the plus is so old and their all betas.

Just load up EZ flash and flash like normal. Let me know if it works ok.

wow, thank you! the file is alot larger than the other bios for the p5b-plus. Are you sure it won't brick my board? just completed htpc build with new Ceton 4 tuner digital cable card and would hate to start over!

thanks again so much.

Once you extract the file then you'll see their both 1024KB. It should work since the only thing changed is the CPU Microcode and updated one of the PCI controller roms.

Make sure you have the current bios from the ASUS site saved on your USB before trying to update just incase. Even if the bios doesnt work you are still able to use EZ-Flash, when I first modified my P5Q Turbo I messed up pretty bad cause I extracted one of the PCI roms wrong and it was hanging. Just hit escape and it open EZ-Flash its seperate from the Bios.

OK sounds good.

One more question - have others tried this Commando version on the P5b-plus? I am a bit concerned about being an alpha or beta test!

Thanks again.
