Well I've been able to get it this high and I should probably be satisfied with that.

I had read though that people were getting 3.2ghz out of these in some instances and I was hoping to push it a little more.

Right now I'm using 387*7 for 2708mhz, ram is patriot brand (http://shop1.outpost.com/%7B+QSVtnUkaOnbJ-hZw+Orbw**.node3%7D/product/5200607;jsessionid=+QSVtnUkaOnbJ-hZw+Orbw**.node3?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG) supposedly capable of 400mhz at 5-5-5-12 2.1v. Unfortunately it won't post at that speed.

I'm wondering in this instance if it's the memory or the processor itself that's the limiting factor here. I can get it up to 389*7 but start having glitches. 387*7 is completely stable.

i am using the stock cooler, so perhaps that is the first thing i should swap out. with stock at idle it's running 45c, load at 60c. i read that the threshold for this cpu/stepping was 75c so it seems in tolerances.

what temperature program were you using to monitor the temps? btw, post some bios settings would be helpful.

sure i was using aisuite to monitor the temps, with the settings at fsb: 387, memory: 774, ram at 5 - 5 - 5 - 12, ram voltage 2.1v, cpu voltage auto (shows up as 1.3925v). spread spectrum disabled, speedstep and c1e disabled.

trying to oc to 2.8ghz i set it to fsb: 400, memory: 800, ram at 5 - 5 - 5 -12, ram voltage 2.1v, cpu voltage i've tried in the range of 1.4 - 1.45 (afraid to go much higher with stock cooling), spread spectrum disabled, speedstep and c1e disabled.

the processor never goes over 60c even with prime95 chugging at 2.7ghz but it won't even post at speeds over 389fsb.

i can take some pictures when i get home if you want to see the actual bios settings.

anyone have any ideas? i'm using coretemp to monitor my current oc, it's 39c at idle/59-60c load. i see other people have been able to get past 400fsb without changing any voltage settings, i have tried now up to 1.5v core voltage, it still will not post past 389 (which seems buggy).

per cpu-z's memory page i am seeing that this memory has timings 5-5-5-15 tras 12 trc 22 command rate 2t, voltage 2.0. i've tried that and it will not post.

should i just give up at this point? would 3rd party cooling make any difference?

i'm starting to think about getting an e3110 or x3350 after the prices settle down a bit, this cpu does not seem to really perform at it's potential

Is that an allendale based chip? If so it very well may be a FSB wall you are hitting. I had one that would not budge past 378.

interesting, the strange thing is i have the onboard video disabled (at least i think it's disabled). i wonder if there is some way around this, i do have a 9600gt plugged into the agp slot.

good to know though, thanks.

Same mobo I have, and I can get up to 460+ without too much trouble. Perhaps you need a BIOS update? Mine's running like a tank. I haven't updated my board since I got it in December and frankly I have no need to. I've seen on the boards that some people have had newer BIOS versions that could have given them trouble.

You might consider dropping the CPU voltage back to normal range and raising the Northbridge voltage one to two notches. Even with a 7 multiplier, I can't see how you could not get to 3 GHz. There is an FSB wall; but not to get to 400?

I'm guessing that the thing that's holding you back is the ram. The E6550 is well capable of going over 3.0 ghz. And of course you might need a better cooler .
When I first got my chip in July along with a Zalman 9700LED, It was hard to get past 2.6 for the first 2 months with 1.4vcore or something if I remember correctly. After a while, I gave 3.0 a shot and it ended up working at around that vcore. Next day I went straight for 3.5 at 500x7 1:1 with my Corsair XMS2 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820145590 ) at 500mhz each at stock speeds and 2.0v. It worked out to my surprise and ran Orthos and everything else I could to make sure everything was cool. Now, I'm still running at 3.5 and gradually dropped my vcore over time to ~1.31 and temps are ~30 idle/~56 load.

Most of the time I see a E6550 OC thread where there are issues, it's the ram. Mine had trouble at 333-400 fsb. Sometimes 400 would run ok, other times it wouldn't even post and I had to bring it back down to under 333fsb. I switched from OCZ Platinum PC2-6400 to Buffalo Firestix PC2-8000 and as soon as I popped in the Firestix, it fired right up at 3.5Ghz using 501FSB and I never looked back.

The memory I am using is supposedly pc-6400, it's the el cheapo DDR2-800mhz patriot memory they sell at Fry's.

Here's a link: http://shop1.outpost.com/produ...hNXCU4EaKLv2pvETT5Frow**.node1?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

I will look into some better ram, i am actually going to sell this processor to someone at work who is building a system for their mom, so it won't be overclocked at all in that situation. I'll take the $100 from him and apply it towards an e8400 or e3110 and take it from there.

Thanks all for your advice, I'm sure I'll have more questions once the new chip arrives.
