help, I'm stuck on my overclock!

I have gotten this cpu up to 385*9 (3.465ghz).

Spread spectrum is disabled, onboard video is disabled, ram runs at 400mhz without issue.

Taking it up to 400*9 will not post.

385*9 is stable, temps run from 19C to 39C.

Any help or tips appreciated, I know this chip has more speed in it!

Tweak the northbridge? That's weird that it won't POST at 1:1. If you haven't done it, increase the NB voltage by one or two notches (but no more). That should get you to 9x400. Funny, that's probably my next CPU (not for awhile, though).

I'm sure 400 x 9 is possible even with all stock volts. Are you sure your FSB/RAM ratio is 1:1? And is your RAM OCed to 800MHz or defaulting at 800MHz?

i tried vcore up to 1.225, i think that is the outer limit for e3110. it runs at 9x385 at 1.1925. i have not touched nb, pll. ram runs default at 800Mhz, it is not overclocked.

i read a lot about this board before buying it, and have had no luck getting past 385 with any chip. i have seen screens of this board running cpus up to 450 fsb though, but i have no idea how.

does the vdroop mod make any difference?

Not really. It just eliminates vdroop.

Now... try this:
FSB: 400
RAM: select 800 MANUALLY instead of leaving it at AUTO.

And then leave everything else at auto.

And by the way, that board could go to 600FSB, not just 450.

yep tried that too, no difference.

i have disabled everything on the board perhepheral wise and still the same thing, it's baffling.

i had already had 800mhz selected for ram manually, so i was factoring that in.

could it be the board is bad? i suppose i can try for an rma.

I was looking at the NB temp, it's very hot, like 59c. I think I should get a cooler for it before I try any more OC experiments. Is that Extreme Spirit any good?

I think your volts are a little low. OCing requires some voltage tweaking for the CPU, NB and psosibly the FSB voltage. And Runaway is right, memory at Auto isn't gonna work. Far as I know. 1.3V on an e3110 is well within tolerance. If you're not willing to incrase the NB and FSB voltages and tweak the CPU voltage up a bit, you can't expect to OC at all. Please note that Runaway is running the 4-core version of that chip on the same mobo and is getting screaming OCs.

Also, I would not take any BIOS temp measurements seriously. That stuff is notoriously inaccurate.

I seriously doubt there's anything wrong with your board.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but are there pictures / diagrams of which resistor to pencil-in to reduce vdroop? I have this board and my vdroop under load is ~ 0.1v.

I did the vdroop pencil mod and the vdroop is now worse! I will have to wipe it off and start over I suppose.

Initial settings : Vcore @ 1.2625 in BIOS, 1.22v idle, 1.16v under load ( Prime95 )

After pencil mod: Vcore @ 1.2625 in BIOS, 1.18v idle, 1.12v under load

Any chance you can post a pic of how you have your nb cooler installed? I'm not sure that I can do this without some idea what it looks like mounted.

Still looking for any advice on this, I'm running at 3.4 stable now. I'm including some pics of my MB settings. Someone had mentioned something to me about onboard video, which looks to me like it is disabled, but maybe i'm missing a setting? BIOS Version is 0503.

Set your RAM speed to DDR2 - 760, and then set your FSB to 400 (RAM will jump back up to DDR2-800). Should boost just fine afterwards. Your problem is your RAM sticks are running at over 900MHz even at 380MHz FSB, and obviously, not so many modules can do that at low voltages. Auto ram voltage in BIOS means it'll only be at around 1.80v - 1.90v. For anything higher than 800MHz, most of the time, you need to set 2.00v, though. Try setting your RAM voltage to 2.20v if you can't afford to reduce your RAM speed. But really, don't be so greedy.

yea, what i was trying to say there is that I am pretty sure the RAM is not having trouble at 800mhz which is what I originally thought the problem was.

the last time i tried changing settings, this afternoon that's what I did. Set the RAM to 760, save & reboot, then go to adjust the fsb to 400 and it automatically jumped to 800mhz, then save & reboot - but it won't post.

i read somewhere about the igp having trouble overclocking and staying stable after 380-385mhz, and although i think it's disabled which is in the screenshot below:

http://i301.photobucket.com/al.../tony_bar/P1010272.jpg

anyway, I am thinking of getting a 9450 pretty soon for video editing, and i'd like to push it up to 3.2 which requires 400mhz & my particular sample of p5e-vm hdmi doesn't seem able to hit that mark.

In another thread someone suggested using 2gb of memory vs. 4gb of memory for best overclocking with the p5e-vm hdmi, anyone able to verify that or have any idea why that would be?

Nope. Not IGP problem. (I clock this Q9450 at 4GHz with the IGP)
And nope, not that 2GB would be easier than 4GB. I never had any problem with that. Here's proof:
http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=344121

You can see that the graphics adapter is not detected... simply because it's onboard.

My guess is... try to set your vCore to 1.3625v and see what happens. Chances are, you got a dud chip that requires a lot of vCore to stay at 3.6.

did you need to connect the molex -> 6 pin pci-e power cable to your 9800gtx? I don't have it plugged in to my 9600gt and I wonder if that could be causing the the overclock issues? My system wouldn't boot with the 6-pin adapter plugged in.

Yes, I need to plug it in, otherwise the card will "moan." You just need it plugged in to power the 9600GT, but now that you mention it, I suspect your PSU is at its limits at 3.4GHz, so it can't supply much more power. Not even enough for the 9600GT.

Weird, psu is rated at 585w, its not a name brand one though so I dunno.

I didn't need to plug in the pci-e card at all, it just fires up and runs without 6-pin power. I have no trouble with video in any app.

Maybe a better psu will solve it. I'm borrowing 2 * 1gb modules from a friend tomorrow or weds to check if my memory is the problem, if that doesn't fix it then PSU is the next thing to try.

i got it to post at 400*8 @ 1.3625 but only once and it wouldn't boot the OS. I tried stepping the voltage up 2 more notches and no love.

NB cooler went on the board today too, dropping temp to 49c down from 59c, but it still seems kind of hot.

The NB is supposed to be quite hot. But don't worry, it can take up to 100C. And I think I'll give the PSU the benefits of the doubt then.

I broke down and got an x3350, I just installed it and viola 400mhz without breaking a sweat. Now that I've got it at a sweet 3.2ghz which Core temps should I be aiming for?

CoreTemp is showing 77c under load from prime 95, but aisuite shows 67 - 68c. I'm using a thermaltake i1 right now (http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16835106085) - do you think I need a better cooler?

I noticed my prime 95 run died on one thread almost immediately, then another one died a bit later. It says there was a rounding error and to consult stress.txt which I can't locate.
