Hello fellow members of Anandtech

I had just recently registered here and all I could say this site has helped me answer many of the questions that have been in my mind for some months now. Anyway, I have just received my new motherboard <Message Title> that I spent $292 for from Directron.com, <the motherboard + shipping and handling>. I have not yet taken the board out of its box feeling it might be defective. I also know that it was just released sometime ago and read from few comsumer reviews that it is a bright board with promise. But knowing how many of ASUS's current motherboards, they all tend to have a high RMA rate. Hopefully this motherboard stands to its name. One great thing I love about this board is that it comes with a 3-way SLI bridge and an ASUS 2-way SLI bridge, so 2-3 way is possible, yet I dont really plan to go all out Tri-SLI, most likely 2-way SLI. Another feature that I find interesting is that, although it uses only DDR2 memory, you could slap in DDR2 1200s.

Regarding memory, I am not sure to what memory to get for this board, for now Im just going to use my old 2GB OCZ memory till I find the right kind of memory for this board.

Since many, here at Anantech, have posted so many threads (some useful while others not so) I thought to finally ask for some advice from anyone.

a) ASUS P5N72-7 Premium - is this a good board to OC and SLI with?
b) Is anyone here using this board and if so how has the board been working for you?
c) Did I regret getting this board in the first place, since its somewhat still new?

Hoping for a helpful reply

regards,

Welcome to AT

a) I have not come across any users complaining on the forums otherwise. In general, most 780i's OC about as well as the 680i.
b) Can't comment but I would think there would probably be a few users here.
c) Well considering you have not set it up yet to find out if there are any problems there shouldn't be anything to regret . In the worst case scenario you will have to RMA the product or perhaps get a full refund from the place you bought it (dependent on their returns policy).

As for memory, check the motherboard compatibility list on Asus's product page and see if you can find you're specific memory. It's rare to come across incompatibility and keep in mind it does not have to be DDR1200 to run....it just supports that standard- you can you're memory at nearly whatever speed you want due to memory dividers and Nvidias 'Unlinked' memory option (allowing memory to run independant from the FSB in most circumstances).

Thanks for the welcome Sylvanas. Hope this board will do the trick. I'm just waiting for the other parts to come in, should be in the next few days. I guess your right about the 780 OC about as well as the 680 and seeing that pretty much no one yet has posted a thread about having problems with this board. Should do well. I guess when it comes to the whole DDR2 1200 thing if this board could max out with that kind of memory, I would want to get that kind of memory too and yet DDR2 1200s are few of a kind.

But as always, it would help a lot if someone at least has this board and would like to share some insight about it:thumbsup:

So, is there a widespread problem with ASUS boards? I have an older board and it's been great. I'm planning to buy a new computer, and was planning on another ASUS board.

I am just talking about the ASUS 790 boards and some of the 780s, but seeing that this board that I have just recently got released I was hoping for it not to be defective thats all, just basing the info from newegg, on the reviews for these types of boards from ASUS not the other models.
