ASUS P8H67-M PRO B3 - No sound! (Realtek ALC892, Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit)

I bought ASUS P8H67-M PRO B3 last week, along with a Core i5-2500K, 8GB RAM and a 120GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD.

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and everything seems to work. Except the onboard sound! No sound, no matter what, at least from the analog lime green minijack on the back panel. I haven't tried the front panel minijack. My case doesn't have a front panel minijack so the front panel connector on the motherboard is not connected to anything.

The onboard sound chip is Realtek ALC892.
I tried disabling and enabling onboard sound in the BIOS.
I tried choosing either AC97 or HD in the BIOS.
I tried installing the latest 64-bit driver from the download page of that particular motherboard.
I tried fiddling with the Realtek Control Panel, disabling and enabling all sorts of options.
I tried the newest driver directly from Realteks homepage.
I tried just using the original Microsoft HD Audio driver that Windows defaults to.
I tried installing a 32-bit OS, Windows XP.
I tried booting on several Linux live cds, both 32-bit and 64-bit.
I tried all the different minijacks on the backpanel. The Realtek Control Panel recognizes which minijack is used, and it asks me if I inserted headphones or speakers (Line Out), I choose Line Out. I also tried headphones.
The same speakers works fine with other sources via the same minijack.

In all cases, the onboard sound is reported as recognized and working by the OS, but there is NO SOUND from the back panel minijack.

Any ideas? Should I send the board back?

Check the "Mute" button on your keyboard, software application (such as windows media, mp3 player etc ..)

Make sure that the volume control in the lower right hand corner of screen (windows task bar) is above 0%

The on board sound is probably bad if it still doesn't work.

It is not muted and the volume is at 100

I'll send the board back.

Hello houlelap, and welcome to AnandTech Forums.

What graphics card are you guys using? Are you guys using HDMI cables?

Go into Control Panel and click on Sound. For the Playback tab, what is checkmarked?

Hello,
I got a ASUS P8H67-M EVO B3, integrated graphics, so no graphic card. I'm not using any HDMI cable.
In the playback tab, the Realtek Digital Output(Optical) is checked (but I tried to connect my home theater, I got no sound) and in the same tab, speakers are not detected. It seems that the mobo doesn't detected if a jack is inserted ... I'm unable to get sound by any port (rear, front, optical).
I'll think that I'll send back this mobo.
Tx

This is why you aren't getting sound. The problem of course is why it doesn't detect the speakers. Have you tried reinstalling the drivers from the disc?

Nice! I don't have the Realtek HD Audio Manager (different sound chipset on current mobo) but that's what I remember seeing before.

Thanks guy for your reply.!
Bankster, thanks for your images.
I have the sames, except that in the sound manager windows, Speakers is grayed ("not plugged in") (even if speakers are plugged (in the green jack), I tried with two sets of speaker), so I can not configure them or make them as default.
So because, speaker are flag as "not pluggeg in", I don't have any Speaker tab in Realtek HD Audio Manager :-(
I'm still thinking that the mobo jack insertion detection is defective ... I have my RMA number, so I think I'll change it ...
Thanks for your help guys.

I would seriously doubt that the jacks are bad

Just make absolutely sure the Realtek HD audio is enabled in bios
And that you have the correct minijack
Before giving up. I would def try your green output when connected to a stereo receiver into the tape inputs, and "Tape" selected. Go to Frys and get an RCA L-R stereo to single minijack cable (the minijack connector will be black)
http://www.amazon.com/PH62089-Stereo.../dp/B0001GAOE0

Also make sure the Realtek (NOT the MS generic) shows this dev is working properly in Dev man

You can also try headphones (everyone has an MP3 player, right?) with both your rear jack and the front panel jack on your case.

Please, guys. With all due respect.

I did try all motherboard settings. The Realtek HD audio is enabled in BIOS. Also, I can choose between HD and AC97, tried both. As I wrote in the original post, I am using the ANALOG green minijack on the pack panel. The Realtek control panel detects the speakers put into this jack just fine. In the Realtek control panel, the analog speakers are chosen, not the optical output (Toslink) or the S/PDIF. I also tried both the drivers on ASUS' homepage and also the latest ones from Realteks homepage. I also tried fiddling with every imaginable setting in the Realtek control panel. There are settings that disables the back panel if the front panel is connected and so forth. Tried them all, on or off. Tried all combinations of the above. Result: no sound. I also tried installing XP. I also tried booting on several different 32-bit and 64-bit Linux live cds. No sound.

I send the board back. They send me a replacement. No sound.

Now, this is either some kind of systematic defect or issue with this motherboard or audio chip, or something wrong with the rest of my hardware. But what? I use the same case and PSU as with my old build, an Antec 1040B II with an Antec 400W PSU. New CPU, RAM and motherboard. Sound worked fine in the old motherboard in the same case. The only thing I haven't tried is a newer PSU and a case with front panel audio that I can connect to the motherboard.

My current PSU has a older 20-pin power cable instead of the now normal 24-pin. It also have a 4-pin 12V power connector instead of the now normal 8-pin connector. Both worked fine in the old motherboard which had a 24-pin connector and a 4-pin connector and seems to work fine in this, apart from the sound. Also, I believe they're supposed to be backwards compatible, unless you need the extra power. They certainly fit. Also, the manual of the motherboards calls these 20/24-pin and 4/8-pin respectively.

Also, I haven't tried connecting the front panel connector on the motherboard to front panel audio jacks, since they don't exist on my case. And the manuel doesn't say anything about these having to be connected in order for the read panel jacks to work.

Really annoying. Now I have to try a billion things before I can send this board back as well and buy an entirely different one.

Have you tried some headphones in the same green jack?

Have you checked the Sound applet in Control Panel (first pic posted by bankster55)?

I also tried both the drivers on ASUS' homepage and also the latest ones from Realteks homepage.

Just for shits and grins, can you try the sound driver included on the driver disc that came with the motherboard?

I went and perused the ASUS support forums and found NO ONE complaining about this problem.
If this were a common problem, there'd be many, many complaints in their forums.
(since I looked yesterday, there is ONE post about Realtek drivers, but the person has sound with the generic Windows drivers)

You could always try the Generic Realtek drivers...

Yes. No sound.

Yes, speakers were already selected as default. Have checked everything in Properties and Configure also. No sound.

I tried that. No sound.

I also tried a brand new PSU with a 24-pin connector. No sound.

I'm not sure, I've had this problem with two motherboards and another guy had it with one.

I already did try those. No sound.

Interesting info about connecting the front panel connectors. I already considered this, but I don't have a case with a front panel connector.

I tried connecting a front panel connector from another case. Alas, no sound.

This is so frustrating! I'm beginning to think I'll never get sound out of this board. I can't believe this isn't all over the Asus forum.

Oh man, what a bummer. I just hate when crazy shit like that happens.

Theres actually another post here yesterday, same thing and a few others on hardforum, another on Toms HW, and another here..........
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...d=1&model=P8P67+DELUXE&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

Possible good tip here (page 2)........
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...hd-audio/8788a35a-2ff9-4806-8733-bd39eb00a7e5

When you install Win 7 it creates its own MS sound entry (Intel Hi Def Sound Dev on southbridge) in Dev Man, then when you add the Realtek HD drivers, it adds that one. Make sure the Realtek is "this device is working properly", then make generic disabled. Reboot.
Make sure you do install RT HD drivers and set RT in bios to HD (NOT AC97) and same HD for front panel. I am using 6.01.6299 1-25-2011 fwiw.
Make sure you have HD connector from fron panel to mobo, not AC97 to co-ordinate with bios front panel settings!!
If no front panel - disable in bios.
I am also using Win 7 SP1 dunno if that helps.

Set power options to "performance" and put everything in advanced on max
You might wanna check out the other post and note my file association thingy carefully and the codec link.
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2158787
And also note there the "use this device" at bottom in speakers properties/general
I assume you are not getting any Windows sounds?
Could it be the ohms load your speakers presented to the green output? 4-8-16-32?
Have you tried running the cable to a stereo receiver tape input first then to speakers?
Do the speaker sound tests work?
Are you using a Single 3.5mm minijack stereo connector to the green port only?

I might also mention in passing that the WMP with Win 7 wont play files converted to AVI or WMV, whilst WMP 11 plays them fine. I tried to revert to WMP 11 after disabling WMP 12, but it wont let me. I download a lot of youtube music videos and my downloader does the converting (flv) to wmv or avi and they play video but no sound because they are not ORIGINAL wmv or avi. So I use KMplayer, or GOM player with the black deluxe skin - both will play anything thrown at them, both are freeware. I wouldnt use WMP to test any sound prob, thats fer sure.
But this is a whole nuther topic.
