I came across this thread when searching in google. I am having exactly the same problem with Asrock H67M ITX board. No sound from back or front (Ac97 or HD). The plugs are not detected by software when I plugged in the back. The chip near the connecters also feel burning hot.

I had a similar case awhile back. In my case (different mobo, though), the back ports would work IF I unplugged the front audio cable from the mobo. For some reason, when it's left plugged-in, the software thought it's Digital/Optical Out, so all attempts of analog speakers failed. For the heck of it, you may want to unplug the front audio cable from the mobo and see if it makes any difference.

Hi,

I've been researching this problem because I've ran into the same a few days ago. I found this forum via Google (but I've already heard of and used Anandtech in the past, very helpful)... anyway, moving on:

I have an Asus P8P67 Pro motherboard with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit installed.

Sound was working perfectly, 2.1 speaker set connected via a single cable in the green audio port at the back of the motherboard. I am also capable of AMD HD Audio via the HD monitor and my XFX HD 5870 graphics card.

2 days ago I tried a new set of headphones which included a mic, it had 2 cables, green and pink for headphone and mic respectively... I plugged these into the front 2 ports of my case (only two ports on the front, green and pink)... however I did this at the same time as the 2.1 speaker set was plugged in at the back - maybe this fried the audio chip? I'm not sure.

Now I get no sound, all audio ports front and back are not responsive, in the sound devices it says that speakers and mic are not plugged in. In the Realtek Manager window it has all the audio ports greyed out (they used to highlight depending on which port was plugged in)... there is no longer any popup message when I plug into any of the ports.

NOTE: Strangely enough, the AMD HD Audio works perfectly. Just not the analog ones.

Here are some pictures to help perhaps:

Hi everybody,

I'm in the same situation as lot of you guys.
Asus P8H67-m pro + corei3 2100 + win7 32bits
I get sound neither on the rear nor on the front panel even if the connected jack is detected.
I've just tried a bios update to version 1003 released 4 days ago but unfortunately it hasn't changed anything.
I think I'd rather buy a second hand PCI sound card for 5€ than paying for sending the mobo back to Asus and get one in return that could also not work.

Any good idea/solution is welcome.

a+

Play something audio high volume (with no actual sound) for a few minutes then put finger on realtek chip see if its hot

What do you have showing in dev man for sound-video-game controllers?

Does your monitor have speakers?

You have " Realtek Digital Output ", as the default device.

Have you tried changing that to " Analog " ...

@sherryar

You didnt fry the chip, you lost sound associations. You have AMD sound,
Start fresh
In dev man, bluetooth and AMD controllers right click "disable" both
Shutdown
Disconnect HD or AC 97 plig from case to mobo
Boot to bios make sure HD is set in realtek
Boot
Note: when you change modes you need to also change modes in realtek manager - it doesnt happen automatically!!! You left that screenshot off
Need to look in manual for proper connections
Then highlight speakers (analogue) in Realtek manager and set as default/stereo sound OR 5.1 OR 7.1
Then highlight speakers in Win 7 sound and highlight/set as default AFTER setting Realtek
If you cant set speakers as default then right click uninstall realtek controller in dev man reboot and reinstall realtek drivers with your single green connected

Hi, I have followed these instructions but still no luck... here are some images:

After changing 'Disable front panel detection to on', speakers and mic were shown but still no luck, they were showing the front panel ports which are not even connected, when right-clicking on them it gives me the option to re-task them to another port but still no luck.

NOTE: Throughout the whole process, the audio cable for front audio ports on case to motherboard has been removed inside, I am only using the back of the audio port on the motherboard.

Could you show me how to do that please? I have very limited options showing up and nothing to let me change to analogue.

You are in analogue now (speakers) and they are the default device in both Realtek and Windows - good
But you have muted the "rear device" which are the six mobo ports
You need to check the "make the front and rear simultaneous"

Lets start from fresh
>The Bios Realtek setting is HD not AC97
>The Realtek drivers you loaded are HD not AC97
>The Realtek in dev man under sound controllers is Realtek HD not AC97
>The case connector from front pane to mobol says HD - NOT AC97
>Right click Realtek HD audio sound controller in dev man properties, and "device is working properly" shows
>Uncheck the disable front panel detect you made in port settings

Right click "disable" AMD HD and Bluetooth audio controllers in dev man (temporarily)

O.K. currently...........
Your front panel analogue shows now, but no rear panel live port icons - nothing plugged in = nothing active.
If you plug something in a port - that lights up where it is
If you have rear panel (mobo) working and default advanced = mute and THEN unplug rear green connector, insert something to front panel the adv option goes from 6 ports icons with green active to greyed out and dual front ports (green) active (you) and advanced changes to simultaneous
If you THEN add another connector back to the rear, both sets of icons light up and adv/simultaneous remains. If you remove fronts, advanced changes BACK to mute.

In the following I am using just 3.5MM stereoi pin connectors\cables BY THEMSELVES. This forces a detect query from windows, and allows you to manually select your sound device. This way you can test to see if everything functions, and dont have to worry about some HW that doesnt detect properly.

I unplug my rear green and put in 3.5mm plug on front panel, nothing in rear
Detected and I get a popup. I pick headphone.

then my front icons light up, rears icons dead, notice sound defaults to digital audio (red checkmark), and headphones now show

"advanced" automatically changes to simultaneous

then i put in ANOTHER connetor/cable to rear green (front and rear detected, both light up, analogue speakers show up again

Then headphones and analogue speakers show in Win 7 sound

After pulling front connector and leaving rear in, you MAY have to pull the rear green 3.5mm mini plug OUT, wait a few seconds, then back IN - EVEN if your rear ports are live in RT manager. Do it QUICKLY, with PC on so you dont short anything. Sometimes Windows doesnt change back from headphones (while Realtek did) - to speakers (analogue). Or you can just double click green port.
You will get popup, then pick "front speakers out". - Its the front STERO speakers NOT the front PANEL speakers!!!
Volume on speakers down of course
Forced redetect.............

In other words with just two 3.5MM pin connectors/cables you can cycle thru the whole functionality of your Realtek chip

And one other thing - you have to co-ordinate speaker port plugins to speaker config
You cant get 5.1 sound with all ports loaded when you are in Stereo (green)
Man, these audio posts are gonna drive me nutso

Well, now I'm having this issue on a similar mobo. ASUS P8P67-M. Sound was working fine until today. I'm not very patient and would like to just give up already and get a sound card, but I will probably want to Crossfire in the future and I won't have room for a sound card on this board. I need to get this working. I didn't build the system myself. Do you think calling their tech support would be a waste of time or should I give it a shot?

As to what I've done, same as most here. Disabled and reenable the Realtek. Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, from the mobo disc, then ASUS's website, and then Realtek's site. The computer shows everything is working and I get the green bars moving when audio is playing in iTunes, I just don't hear it. I've tried headphones and speakers from another computer. When I uninstalled the drivers and the system was rebooting, I got a pulsing noise through the speakers until the drivers reinstalled, then it was silence or static if turned up to full. I thought maybe it was the back jacks, but I get the same static from the front jacks.

To answer a few questions that come to mind from reading this thread, yes, the active device is the speakers. In Device Manager, the two listed items are AMD High Definition Audio Device and Realtek High Definition Audio. I had sound earlier today. What I was doing beforehand was, I shut down the computer in order to install a Antec VCool. It connects to a molex connector and that's it. It then is secured to two expansion slots, but it isn't connected to the motherboard in any way. Now, I sometimes get some static sounds when I install things to the expansion slots and I always have. There were two things routed under my video card right in that area--the HD Audio cable and the EATX cable. I rerouted my HD Audio cable, but that just concerns the front audio panel, right? Even if I replaced that cable, it probably wouldn't have any effect on this problem?

Damn it, everything was good last night. Why did I have to buy and install that stupid fan?

Just as a general observation, it seems the "m" series P67 ASUS - if they have audio probs, the only fix seems to be a new board.
Im guessing at cold or imperfect solder joints at the realtek chip, or even defective chips

Along these lines, if possible you might take off your Vcool and run mobo out of case. And as mentioned in another post here let the audio run for a while (even tho you cant hear it) and put your finger on the realtek chip - see if its real hot. On the deluxe its just to the left of the first PCI slot, on the "m" dont know - have to look in manual/schematic.

I think it's right in front of the HD Audio pins on this mobo. I was running iTunes for a while last night and it wasn't hot. I'm going to hit up newegg for an RMA, even though I'm a couple of days over their limit. After that, I'll talk to the tech support at the place where this system was built. Maybe they'll do something for me or take the board back.

I bought an iBUYPOWER build from newegg, and this happened literally a day over my limit. The guy at iBUY was really cool, though. He said if newegg can't help, I can either get a new mobo from them or I could even send in my entire computer and they would make it work. Newegg, on the other hand, would send me a new computer, which means juggling a lot of files. I think if I'm going to play in the big boy world of modern computers, it's high time I figured out how to install a motherboard, right? Thermal paste and CPU removals scare me a bit, but I was planning to throw on a liquid cooler anyway.

I have experienced the same ASUS P8P67Pro Realtek onboard sound stop working problem as others. I read this and other forums trying a number of possible fixes. I was about ready to give up and order a sound card or contact IBuyPower when in the Realtek HD Audio manager on the speaker tab that the play button beside the speaker configuration would play a sound thru the speakers even though no sound would play through any other method.

It was then that the "DOH!" moment struck, when I noticed that the Set Default Device button/drop-down menu was not grayed out. Somehow the speakers were not set as the default in the Realtek HD Audio manager anymore. One click fixed all my problems.

Hope this helps someone.

Hello netbar, and welcome to AnandTech Forums. Thanks for the tip! Always useful to have another thing to check before hassling with an RMA - just in case.

I, too, am new here. I found this thread through Google, but I've heard of this forum before. I just wanted to thank everyone who posted in this thread. At least now I know that I'm not the only one with this problem.

My ASUS P8H67M-PRO mobo has no sound right now too. It was working fine for two months after I bought it though. I will definitely try all the suggestions of people who posted here. I circumvented this "no audio" problem by plugging my speakers up to my monitor, which is currently using an HDMI cable from the PC.

Know its a pretty old thread * but I have identical problems with p8z68-v. Control panel, dev manager all show devices connected - NO SOUND. Asus are being very slow with assistance. New build and board has already been back for repair to resolve memory issues. CAN WE HAVE SOME HELP FROM ASUS? Running Windows 7 x64 with all latest drivers. Several forums have reported similar problems and I repeat, I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING. Come on ASUS. Judging from all the similar posts I am looking at RMA (which is a real pain) or buying a sound card. Anybody recommend a good (cheap) sound card?

Like others in this thread, I bought a Asus motherboard, (a P8Z68-M Pro in my case - through New Egg), and l had no sound that would output from the analog green back panel audio port. After screwing with the Realtec audio settings for a week and researching on the web, I finally decided I had a bad motherboard. I got an RMA from Asus, sent it back, and they returned it without fixing it. After continuing to complain, they agreed to send me a new motherboard, provided I would send the other back. Today I got the new motherboard, installed it, and my sound now works. I finally get sound from the green back panel audio port. This entire process took me about 2 months to complete with Asus.

During the RMA process, Asus never challenged my contention that the board was bad. Based on research, Asus manufactured a bunch of motherboards with defective audio, and they know it. It seems to me they should have offered to replace the board at the first complaint. Instead they insist that you dismantle your system and send the board back to them for “repairs” that they don’t make. If you are still willing to complain after that, THEN they will send you a working board.
This appears to be a policy of attrition based on the assumption that most buyers will give up or find other alternatives, (like a sound card). For me, that was not an option.

I have learned a lesson about the no fix send back issue with ASUS over time. Never ever return a mobo to ASUS - at least in U.S. Always buy your ASUS mobo from Amazon. They will ALWAYS send you back a brand new mobo, crosshipped by using your orig purchase CC#. The RMA process is automated on website - 4 clicks. You have 45 days for an exchange. You only have to click defective.

Never buy anything computer related from Amazon unless it says "stocked and sold by Amazon"

Jeff Bezos - I luv you

Hi, I have the same problem. I installed win7 64 bit yesterday, and since then the back audio jack doesnt work. Previously I used winxp 32 bit, and it worked fine. Will it resolve the problem if I buy a PCI soundcard and then i disable the onboard sound card?
