The other item we saw from ASUS today is their new P965 Commando board that is designed for serious overclocking. The sample system has has been able to reach up to 585FSB and in memory testing it was running 4GB of OCZ Flex XLC memory at DDR2-1116 (5-5-5-15) for over 24 hours dual prime stable on 2.15V. This system has hit DDR2-1150 with 4GB while running some game and test benchmarks. In a 2GB configuration the system was capable of running up to DDR2-1350 (5-5-5-18) and should reach DDR2-1400 once BIOS tuning is completed. This speed required 2.5V but that is within the OCZ memory spec for their new Flex-XLC series

I would guess striker is a different target market. Striker will be the Deluxe, full options board while the "commando" is going to be a bare-essentials lean mean overclocking machine, think some of DFI's past offerings.

Sorry I wasn't clear: the DFI UltraD was, IMHO, the best A64 board for OCing for the price, hands down. I'm waiting to see if there will be a similar, clearly winning OC value board for C2D. I"m was wondering if this Asus board might fill that open slot.

550 was very stable, clocked it up to 585, not prime stable yet but it did manage to run 3D06. This board really overclocks memory very well without using the same voltages as the 975x or 680i boards, but the RD600 has a few surprises for memory junkies.

Commando sounds like a super-charged P5B-E/P5B Deluxe to me.

We're talking Asus here, do you really think they'd release a really good budget OCer?

The P5B-E will be as close to that as we're gonna get, & it does damn well.

Well, at least dreams don't cost anything until you try to make them real. I don't mind popping for a good board, but it had better really perform. I'm hunting for a real OCing monster. I've been looking at the P5B's in their various flavors and if I were buying today, I'd be there on the Deluxe.

But I'm not there yet . . . so I'll wait while Gary does all the hard work.

So the Commando can do 550+ FSB.

Big whoop.

How exactly is that gonna help us, since almost no E6300 will even do over 7x500 Orthos stable?

The only thing making this worth more than the P5B-D/P5B-E is that it'll get records FSBs for the extreme OCers...

I thought the ASUS Commando would replace the P5B Deluxe but turns out, there is a P5B Premium coming too. So now, there will be two ASUS P965-based $200+ motherboards out there.

BTW, anyone in AT have an Abit AB9 QuadGT yet? It's been on Newegg for two days but not one thread on it.

I got my commando and it doesn't buzz but it's not a good overclocker either.. I got some Gskill ddr2-1000 and a e6600 rev B and really can't do too much..

Maybe it's the bios 803 ... But even w/ a PC P&C 750w psu , it seems rather crazy ... even the asus utility locks up unless you leave almost all the bios setting on their default settings..

I think I'll get a P5WDG2 ws pro to replace this mobo..

Anyone try the new 0803 bios for the Commando yet? I am still using 0702 and just noticed that there is a new one.

I have the 803 bios, maybe that's my problem..

I didn't have much luck but I'm too busy right now to experiment..

Here's what I've gathered from other post:

Set AI Tuning to Manual
Disable everything in the "Adv. Cpu Menu"
Set Ram to 2.2v (My ram goes 2.2-2.4)
Set pci lock to 33.33
set SB sata-pci-e to 1.5-1.8v
set SB to 1.55-1.6v
set Vnorth to 1.5

That leaves the DRAM Freq and the FSB to mess with..

I'll probably wait for another bios rev. before trying again..

One thing that troubles me is the lack of reviews for this mobo, it's been out at least 3 weeks..

I still may replace this with a P5WDG2 ws pro , I'll give it a couple of weeks.

One thing I do know is the current kernel in RedHat 4 update 4 doesn't recognize this board. I guess it's the ich8r ...


Almost forgot, when I make all the changes above my system becomes unstable and is slower.. That's using the default settings vs disabling/changing the above setting.

This is at the same fsb & dram setting no overclock.
