Spike try removing one of those 256 sticks....
read closely in your mobo manual about ram that work with the 845D

you can only use TWO double sided stick and one single sided
256 would be double sided

Gamepc.com has a good article that sums it up nice
link

In fact your manual clearly says this in clear bold print.
that it will not post with all 3 slots full of double sided ram

enjoy!

Actually, the 845D limits you to 4 banks of DDR memory. A single sided stick is one bank and a double sided stick is 2 banks. Therefore if you have two doublesided sticks (which you do, haven't seen a 256MB stick that isn't), you can not put anything in the 3rd DIMM socket. Now you could use 1 doublesided stick and two single sided stick... still equals 4 banks. Hope this helps.

I have somewhat similar problem -- any help appreciated. I have P4B266-C (2 slots for DDR), a P4 1.60A, and one stick 256MB DDR. The DDR stick has sticker that says DDR 2100 266 256M. I think it's double-sided because there are chips on both sides of the stick (is this what double-sided means?). The stick is generic I think -- I bought it at a computer show yesterday. Chip markings are:

4 - 2
46V16M8
-75 A

The green LED on the mobo comes on when I plug the AC power but nothing happens when I turn it on (ie., push the power button on the case).

Also, my standard ATX power supply has output rating 250W (max). Could this be the reason nothing happens when I power on? Should I get a P4 power supply? Thanks.

I serioulsly doubt that it wouldn't boot with a 250W Power supply. That should be plenty enough power as long as you don't have tons of devices hooked up.

Thanks, Schmo.

I may have to return the board to Newegg. I have unhooked everything. I only have the following installed:

1.6A proc
stick of 256MB DDR
ATX power cord
EZ-plug power that replaces the P4's special power cord
power button (front panel/case)
speaker (front panel/case)

When I power on, nothing happens. The P4's fan doesn't even spin.

The symptoms are identical to when I first built my AMD400/SY-5EMA 4 years ago. The solution then was to un-seat/reseat the proc repeatedly. On the 3rd attempt, I got it to beep.

I tried unseating and reseating the P4 a couple of times with no result. I'm suspecting either the memory or the board. But if it's the memory, I think at least the P4's fan should spin or P4B's speaker should wail. So I think it's the mobo. Maybe not all 478 pins of the P4 are making contact.

Before I request for an RMA, I'd really appreciate it if someone can answer 2 questions that I have:

Has anyone used standard ATX power supply on the P4B266 via the EZ Plug? (Not the ATX12V connector for the P4.)
Has anyone tried powering on the P4B266 with no memory installed? Does it wail an alarm?

Thanks!

I am running a P4B266-C with a regular power supply with the E-Z plug. The power supply is a 300 watt Antec model 303 and I have had zero problem with this board.

Vcarpio,

Check and make sure when you mounted the mobo that there are no standoffs or anything
else that may be shorting the mobo out. This happened to me once and the symptoms were
what you are describing.

Just an idea,
Good Luck.

BTW, I just installed a Abit BD7 and a P4 1.6A and there was like 11 holes for mounting
the board to the case! Is that a bunch or what?

Just for the record, there a some threads on this board questioning the stability of the BD7
and I will state for a fact that so far mine is EXTREMELY stable. (not even taking into consideration
that this is a revision 1.0 board with a still immature BIOS history)

Thanks, Mathwiz. I also tried laying the mobo flat on the antistatic bag, outside the case. No luck.

I'm going to BestBuy hopefully they have a 300W power supply for P4. Maybe I should upgrade it anyway -- I've had it for 4 years. If it doesn't work, then I'll RMA the mobo back to Newegg and purchase the non "-C" version of the P4B266 at mwave.

Hats off to Newegg! They approved my RMA request. Their e-mail also states:

Restocking Fee: No

I just placed an order for the more expensive, non-OEM, P4B266 at mwave. Hopefully I'll get my system running and still be not too far behind the bragging bandwagon of 1.60A overclockers...

SPIKEQ20002:
something else to look at: in the upper rightcorner of the MB, near the IDE connectors is a red led. If this is lit, it indicates you have an older video card that runs ( I think) on 2.5 volts, instead of 2.7 ( don't remember the exact numbers). If this is lit during POST, you cannot use that card, and it will not post.

The numbers are 3.3V and 1.5V, respectively. Older cards used 3.3V (I believe some even used 5V, but I'm not sure there), but all new AGP4x cards, as well as several recent cards, should provide the necessary 1.5V. Note, this has nothing to do with the AGP setting (1x, 2x, 4x etc). However, I believe the i845D only supports 2x and 4x modes.

Apart from that, hats off to Resinboy for thinking of that possible error! I believe, Intel even warns that 3.3V AGP cards could possibly fry the chipset and by extension the board. Don't know how seriously that warning should be taken, however.

I'm sorry guys if this is off topic, i'd like to ask some question to Mathwiz or anybodies who got the experience.

Just for the record, there a some threads on this board questioning the stability of the BD7
Mathwiz, how far you can go on fsb, i plan to get 1.8a and still look around for the mobo,
so far I been look toward to Asus P4B266 and P4S333, ABIT BD7-R, and MSI 845Ultra-ARU.
More people here use ASUS as we can find a lot of thread, i'm interested on MSI because of the feature,
specially RAID, well i need it for extra IDE not for the RAID function.
But I'm using ABIT KR7A now and it was good and stable with my XP1900@1740Mhz,
so i've been thinking for another abit mobo since it has RAID also.

Thanks, and sorry again guys for off topic question

peace

Yes...popular older 3.3V boards that won't work in the P4B266 and other P4 boards include the Matrox G400.
