who wouldn't want a 780;
also, who wouldn't want a triple-120hz monitor setup, and the GPUs to run it.

but for us plebs who haven't got that much money, some cards make more sense than others.
on a 1-monitor solution, a 770 will perform at 100% for long enough to be an old card by the time some game comes out which can't be run on it.

the 780 will last longer; but not *that* much longer, and the depreciation is higher than the 770. both cards have a portion of their horsepower left unused, the 780 more than the 770.
not because of some black magic, but because coders know the market, and they don't make Oblivion/Far Cry games anymore (that wouldn't run on anything short of a Quadro); they code games that midrange cards can play.

now, if one has more than a simple 1080p screen, then the better choice is not the 770 anymore - i'm sure the 780 is the sweet spot for many people here on AT... even a U3011 wants more than a 770.

But for your typical "hei guyze, ai want card" recommendation, i always pitch the 770.
with a 760, you'd really run the risk of having to replace before the card is old.

(i'm deliberately ignoring SLI, because i have no experience with it. but i accept that SLI 760s could be a superior choice; especially when you buy one 760 now, and another 1 year down. i'm always for saving $$ for the ideal performance.)

I agree with what you're saying,I didn't say otherwise.But :
1)I'll be running the PC on a HDTV,which can probably do more than 60Hz (I think it uses a 100Hz panel).
2)Even if it's limited to 60Hz,my first upgrade will be a monitor, most probably a 1440p one.I'm sure I won't have the money to upgrade the monitor AND GPU,so a 780 makes me feel more secure about it.
3)The cheapest 4GB 770 (The 2GB isn't an option at all) retails for 350€ here and it's the Palit one.I've never used Palit before,so I'd probably go with a brand I'm more familiar with,so we're looking at over 350€.The cheapest 780s retail for about 440-450€,so it's roughly a 100€ difference (Less if you consider that the cheapest 780 is the DCUII for ~445€ and the 770 DCUII goes for 385&#8364.If I wanted something cheaper than the 780 I'd go with either the R9 290 for about 400€ or even the 280x for 300-350€.With the pricing in Greece, the 770 doesn't really make that much sense, unless you go for the 2GB version, which I'd feel really uncomfortable with.
4)If I have the money I see no reason to not go to at least the 780.The 780ti is prohibitively expensive for now,but anything else is an option right now.If I'm a little over budget,I also see no reason to not get the 4670k instead of the 4770k and save the 100€ for the 780.

This. I have 2 reference 780's that both run at 1202mhz without breaking 80C in gaming situations.

There are only a few reference cards for sale here, and most of them are stupidly more expensive than the custom ones, most probably because of limited stock or something.Cards like the basic EVGA model with the ACX cooler and the DCUII are quite cheaper.

What card? The Poseidon? It's already available for sale.

Must be for sale everywhere but the US considering newegg and amazon don't even have it listed so my question still stands. When will it be available to "US" customers?

hitting 1.3 on air for half the price
What about benching 1.4?

I honestly think even a 770 is ok for a 1440 screen. It might not last as long, but it should last plenty long until the new tech comes out. (Like r9 400 and GTX 900)
