Check that you connected the PCI-E power cables to the graphics card.

Test the graphics card in another system.

Test with other card in the same slot.

Test the monitor with other input (from integrated graphics for instance).

Test the DVI cable.

If you mean no image in BIOS/UEFI, then check the BIOS settings for primary display (using integrated graphics to make the correct settings).

Can you provide a few more details, GullyFoyle? Does the system start up? Are case fans spinning? are the video card's fan spinning? Does the monitor power up or does it stay in sleep mode?

All of Seba's suggestions are great, but we can narrow down the problem a bit more if you provide answers to the above questions.

By the way, as a first step, I'd also clear the CMOS on your motherboard, as there are some settings that can cause issues with new cards.

Sorry to be so late replying...

I got another video card today, for testing. An AMD r9 380 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150730). I plugged it in and don't seem to have any video out of it either.

the system seems to start up., but since no OS is installed, does not get very far. some fans are going, some lights come on on the keyboard. I cannot see the bios, not sure what key to access to bios, it is a new motherboard. I hear reads on the dvd drive.

all new shit:

all put togetrher in a crappy Enermax case. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811124150

not getting any indications of errors from the system. But no Video output. Previously had it built on a Gigabyte motherboard, but it was too finicky, it errored out with most memory. Had it running on one dimm, with no errors for a while.

The integrated graphics works? If yes, access the BIOS while using integrated graphics (DVI output from the motherboard). If not, clear the BIOS and then it should work. If still not working, probably the motherboard and/or CPU is defective.

Also, your motherboard has two PCI-E x16 slots. Try with the graphics card in the second one.

The memory that had problems in the Gigabyte motherboard is the same one? If yes, try again with only one module at a time.

it looks like the issue was my old monitor. I connected my current monitor and i got a picture from the motherboard! Need to burn a copy of x64 windows 7 and see about installing to the new machine!
seems an incompatibility between the new machine and my old monitor, (a Viewsonic vx2268wm). Connected my new monitor (a Benq2720B) and it is working
