I was thinking I'd get an HD4850, but honestly it might be worth it to drop the extra cash for an HD4870. It may have more staying power.

I just bought one of these last week...damn it... Its great though... Im running Crysis, COD4, eveything on 24 inch LCD with MAXED OUT grahics...and not one slow down at all...great card...

I'd say it would all boil down to price. :laugh:
Closer than $50 difference > Grab the 4870
Larger than $50 difference > Go for the 4850

HD 4870 vs HD 4850.

The problem is as soon as the 4870's start dripping then the 4850 drops so that's like chasing a never ending loop.

Just get what you think you should afford. I'd say swing the 4870 if can.

But, considering 4850 is only $150 AR, this 4870 is for $250 AR and roughly 20% faster than 4850, you're looking at paying nearly 67% more cost. Probably not cost effective, but it's a good car if you want speed.

You also get a much better cooler on the 4870 that appears to vent the hot air from the GPU out of the case.
