I would guess only a hand full of Z87 mobos can or will be upgradable. Just certain models. Most of the mobo manufacturers will want you to buy a new mobo so they can make money too.

If ASUS allows it top-to-bottom on Z87, it will be bad press for anyone who doesn't.

this all depends on if intel is on its "time of the month" period.

Ive seen intel spank vendors plenty... and have them pull the entire shelf on items which they didnt approve.

Also violation of NDA is a big no no no with intel... trust me, i had to sign one of those documents and its not something one really wants to mess with.

So i expect a uber fine coming way at Asus, or at the very least, late future samples being given to them if they indeed violated NDA.

Interesting, but I don't think this will have much of an effect on their relationship with Intel.

ASUS just announced a number of new devices at Computex. All of them (even the Android devices) are using Intel chips (Bay Trail, Haswell, Moorefield, Broadwell). Not a single ARM device in their line-up.

What part of an NDA do you think may have been violated? Other mobo partners have already released new BIOS and support information, just not on Z87.

Again, I don't think Intel cares as much about which 1150 board you drop a DC into, as long as it can support the chip's power requirements. It is ASUS/Asrock/Gigabyte, etc. that stand to lose upgrade dollars.

Asus has been a bit rebellious as of late as they recently chose to ignore an Intel NDA regarding their Z97 series.

lol i was reading it off the link which was given.

this could be why the other vendors are being hush hush... as they dont want to be part of the bee storm intel is about to give Asus if they did indeed violated NDA.

Also i bet u its probaby due to shamano that ASuS got this bios upgrade....
This guy is a diety when it comes to boards....
I have yet to see a guy smarter then him when it comes to boards.
I even have pictures of him creating a frankenstien GPU where he took the VRM's off one card by hacking it.. and soldered it onto another card so they could push it harder then what was intended.

Did you have a falling out with your sponsor? I remember looking forward to your cryptic hints and messages regarding new Intel chips back in the day!

What I don't get is why Intel is so against easy upgradability. It sells more CPUs. (Oh, that's right, Intel are greedy bastards, and they want to sell both a CPU and a new overpriced PCH chip too.)
I agree with Intel on the matter of maintaining compatibility.. it's not worth slowing down the advancement of technology over.

If you feel Intel's products are overpriced, please feel *more* than free to pick up an equivalent AMD part.

Since this was bumped, I'm noting that Asrock did it too. Why did people ever think that Intel was making it 9-series only?

Are we really making intel out to be the bad guy here. They make a new product and decide that for whatever reason it may not work on older hardware and release information that says as much. The alternative is several thousand RMAs because third party manufacturers mobos aren't stable with the new chips.

I know what I would do in Intels shoes.

As an Asus Z-87 board owner, this doesn't matter to me. There is no cost/effective point in mildly upgrading from my 4770k to Devil's Canyon.

From things I'd read on other threads before, Intel is switching to letting the after market vendors be more flexible in these things in the future and getting out of the MOBO business all together.

Personally ASUS can be a pain on some upgrading on various things, but I love them myself for MOBO's and have three running in the house and a few I've built for others.

I had someone many years ago tell me they didn't like them, finally did and I've been a Fanboi ever since I guess.

Yes, it seems like such a very mild upgrade for the money.

$300+ for an i7-4790K with special TIM that is still inferior to solder? Isn't Haswell-E i7-5820K (6 core/12 thread with solder instead of TIM ) supposed to be around $300+ also.

And when I get to the point where I feel I need to OC my 4770K, it will be on its last legs anyways, and I'll be more than willing to delid it.
