ASUS Sabertooth Z170 Mark1 Will NOT post with 32 Gb Of Corsair Ram (Solved)

Specs :

Intel i7-6700k @ 4.00 GHZ LGA 1151

Currently Vengeance LPX 24 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz – CMK32GX4M4A2400C16

ASUS Sabertooth Z170 – Mark1 Tuf Mobo

Corsair 1200 HCI PSU

Samsung SSd 950 PRO M.2 (Set as OS Primary)

Samsung 850 EVO (Data Storage)

Gigabyte GTX 1080

Windows 10 – Home 64 Bit

Issue : I cannot get all 4 sticks of 8gb RAM to work – I currently can only get 24gb to work (3 sticks only). Board runs perfectly with 24 gb. However, everytime I plug in the 4th stick (regardless of what the last slot is) – Board goes into a continuous power off and on loop and will not post to the bios.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken :

Cleared the CMOS battery / Tested all Ram sticks and all Mobo slots – **All are working / Updated to the latest BIOS / Designated 2400 MHz in Bios for each stick as opposed to Auto Detect / Lowered MHZ / Reset the MEM OK button / Inspected CPU and board for bent pins (Reseated CPU) / Enabled XMP

Comments : Current RAM is not listed on ASUS Qualified Vender List. However, they do have RAM that is listed but is off by just one number. ASUS states that its possibly incompatible. I also noticed that after attempting the 4th stick and rebooting with 3, there is a screen that comes up stating that overclocking was unsuccessful? I am wandering if this is voltage issue between the RAM and board. I am a novice and know just enough to be dangerous. My gut is telling me that the 4th stick is overpowering the board in some form or fashion.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I noticed that there are a lot of RAM setting in the BIOS that I am not familiar with. I really don’t want to RMA the board if at all possible. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Red

Get some specific RAM listed on the QVL....

And/or you can call Asus component support...

Or contact Corsair because they can also tell you if it will work with your motherboard as they also certify RAM to be compatible with certain motherboards. Even though the model is only off by one number, that small variation could be the difference.

Their technical support should be able to tell you of any issues they discovered while doing this, guide you in changing settings in your BIOS, or recommend certain modules that will allow you to install all 32 GB.

Corsair also maintains a RAM compatibility site:

Are you doing anything with RAM voltage? Usually the more slots you are filling, the more likelihood you will:
a. need more voltage to keep the same speed, or
b. need lower timings
due to the increase in lanes the data has to travel on. Also, what do you have the memory set at? SPD?

Technically,...my RAM is not listed on the QVL for Corsair or ASUS. I have RAM number :CMK32GX4M4A2400C16 -- The number listed on both ASUS and Corsair is CMK32GX4M4A2400C14(Ver4.23)(XMP). It is just off by one number? I have no idea on how to change the SPD or voltage speed / timings. Thanks for everyones input and help! I am not going to give up on this. I have ordered this RAM which is on the ASUS QVL:
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Desktop Memory Model F4-2133C15Q-32GRR
I am hoping this will work. It is supposed to be here Tuesday. Perhaps we can help someone else who is having the same issue.

These are the only ASUS QVL DDR 2400 Corsair modules listed for your Sabertooth:

CMD16GX4M4A2400C14 (Ver4.23) (XMP)
16GB ( 4x 4GB )
14-16-16-31
1.2v

CMD32GX4M4A2400C14 (Ver4.23) (XMP)
32GB ( 4x 8GB )
14-16-16-31
1.2v

CMK64GX4M4A2400C14 (Ver4.31)
64GB ( 4x 16GB )
14-16-16-31
1.2v

CMK32GX4M4A2400C14 (Ver4.23) (XMP)
32GB ( 4x 8GB )
14-16-16-31
1.2v

CMK32GX4M4A2400C14 (above) is one of the two 4x 8GB Corsair sets that ASUS has tested to run all 32GB at XMP 2400 on the Sabertooth. Now take a look at the XMP timing on the CMK32GX4M4A2400C16 set that you bought and you can see that a one digit difference in the part number makes a big difference in the timing:

CMK32GX4M4A2400C16
32GB ( 4x 8GB )
16-16-16-39
1.2v

We've all been there....just part of the learning curve.

Very informative input. Especially the timing difference. I bought some :::
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) Intel Z170 Platform / Intel X99 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-2400C14D-32GVK And its working perfectly. Thanks everyone for you help. Now the questions is how to overclock it to 3000 in the bios. Do yall think that this Ram would be ok at 3000? I have a Corsair CPU cooler (dont know if that matters?) I think its very overclockable. If you think I can, what other setting in the bios would I need to change? Timings? Etc.?

Only one way to find out: Try overclocking it

However, you might want to try overclocking at a lower speed at first and working you way up, as you are probably going to have loosen your memory timings to get it all the way up to DDR4 3000 speeds.

Maybe this guide will help you out:

I received some excellent input! Thank you everyone! I actually got

G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) Intel Z170 Platform / Intel X99 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-2400C14D-32GVK

and they work perfectly. I really think that this RAM was just not compatible with this board however I do not know that 100%. I am just tickled to death that its working now with 32gb and actually I have slots available for more RAM if needed for scale-ability. Perhaps someone will find this post and will help them out.

Thanks again!

Good to hear the QVL RAM fixed your issue.

I know some people say "Just buy any RAM you want, it's all the same", but there is a reason the motherboard / RAM manufacturers certify particular modules to work properly with particular boards.

There are definitely differences in all the modules. Sometimes there won't be any issues at all, while other times you get issues like you experienced.
