Asus V6800 Heat?

Greetings,

Just went from a Matrox G200 to the Asus V6800 Pure DDR card. After upgrading my power supply to a 300 Watt model, many of my previous problems were fixed... Using the Asus Smart doctor, I can monitor the heat the card generates. What's the normal operating temp for this card? In other words, when do I start to panic?

In Windows, it runs about 57 Celsius. After playing games it can get up to 70 Celsius. The fan on the Asus card is working, and I have a regular household fan blowing into my open case right now as well (That gets regular windows temps down to about 53 Celsius).

I'm worried cuz sometimes I turn on my computer, and the screen is filled with white ascii characters. OTher times, I get speckles of colour in the Q3A demo menu, and in game textures are just not working right. Usually a quick reboot fixes this tho... Am I overheating, or does it sound like a flakey card? My specs:

Windows 2000 Professional
Celeron 533 @ 533
Asus P2B-S Rev 1011
300W PSU
196 MB RAM
ASus V6800 Pure 3.84e Asus drivers running at default 120/300 speeds (detonators don't work stabily)
Aureal Quad PCI Soundcard

Any help, or info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Had the same quality problems (but only in OpenGL games) when I overclocked the memory to 333mhz. now it's running at 325mhz and textures seem to be okay for my purposes (i rarely play q3a for sessions of longer than 40 minutes at any one time)

when my 6800 dlx boots into win98, after a few minutes of idling, the temp of the geforce is about 54-55 degrees. i'm thinking of using the dynamic cooling function, but then, that would probably make it pointless to overclock in the first place.

My Asus V6800 DDR Deluxxx (@ 125/325) normally runs at 57-60C and gets up to 66-68C after extended Q3. I also use the 3.84e drivers in WIn2K. But it doesn't lock up or give me any weird visual artifacts so I am not concerned about the operating temp. I have a Soyo 6BA+IV and the orientation of the AGP slot is such that the video card is upside down, i.e. the fan in towards the bottom of my case. Perhaps this makes it run a bit hotter. I also put in a GlobalWin CAF12 for general video card and motherboard cooling. Next step is probably a blow hole.

When I boot I also get a flash of ASCII characters but they don't fill the screen and I don't get speckles in Q3. Can you try your card in another machine to see whether it behaves the same? Good luck.

My card is oriented the same way as yours, and I've had a regular house fan blowing on it with my case off. In windows, temp goes down to 45 Celsius, and up to 57 in Q3A. The ascii chara\cters that appear on my screen at post, are carried through into windows. I have to shut off and reboot until the prob. goes away.

I've tested it in an Abit Be6 with win98, but the PSU isn't powerful enough in it to make testing results worthwhile.

I was playing Q3A last night and parts of the windows desktop were flashing through at times. No other programs werre running... I'm gonna take the card back and get it replaced... I'm hoping it's a flakey video card
