ASUS V7700 GTS2...worth it (it's free)?

My brother?s shop just received a bunch of OEM ASUS V7700 GTS 32MB cards. I was thinking of replacing one of these with my V5 since I'll be playing CS 1.0 most of my spare time.

GTS owners, how do you like your cards, fast? Also, are any of you using a VIA chipset, and if so are you having any problems?

Thanks.

Well, the V5 was free too. But I want to hear from some GTS owners, and poeple who are running their GTS on a via chipset, if they have problems with stability?

Well there are millions of people using Geforce 2's on VIA chipsets, so there will be some problems. I have not heard of any major conflicts, and if you want high fps in CS, then the GTS better fits your needs.

Yeah, that's true. Yep...CS all the way, and soon Tribes 2 (I hope soon, and HALO).

You'll have no probs at all as long as you upgrade teh Via 4 in 1 drivers.

That makes the GTS play nice with the Via Chipset

I have a Creative 32MB GTS w/ Asus A7V.. All systems go..

It's fast.. damn fast

Thanks guys, I?ll be installing the card today and I?m very excited to see the difference (I?ve been a Matrox and 3dfx owner for to long). So I?ll be playing CS all night, hehehe?

Using a P3V4X here and there's no problem. The only thing is that AGP 4x doesn't work with the GTS and the Apollo Pro 133A chipset so I it automatically defaults to AGP 2x. Not that it has any discernible performance decrease.

yeah, i think some registry hack. i've seen it listed in different places. don't know how well it works though or if it screws things up.

You guys were right, no problems at all. I just played CS 1.0 for four hours, and not one hiccup, nothing (under Win2k)! Also using the latest Win2k Det. drivers?nice and smooth. I?m going to try and play some Q3 right now.

didn't you notice though that the max fps in win2k is capped at 60 fps? seems to have something to do with the drivers. and refresh rate is automatically 60hz for some reason. when i play on win98 i get 100+ fps and regular refresh rate. there's something weird about win2k and everybody else i've talked to has the same problems.

Yes, I can set it to 99.9FPS, but it'll stay at 59.9FPS regardless. Thought it is still smoother then my V5 was, and rarely goes below 50FPS. My refresh rate is at 80Hz, does it change when I enter a game?

BTW, Q3 is so damn dark, it there a way to change that, I have the brightness set to high, but that doesn?t help at all?

I just read that the refresh rate sets to 60hz. anyhow, i sorta notice the screen being more "flickery" when I play CS in Win2k.

I have an Asus P3V4x and GeForceMX, don't enable AGP4x or Fastwrite. I enable these one at a time and UT keeps locking up. But Q3 works fine.

uy get 60fps max due to vsync being ON/Enabled and the monitor is running at 60Hz when playing. Turn it of in the driver option section.

Anyone have a new asus v7700 deluxe driver? is v5.33 the only available? for Win2k.

Ok...I turned the option off in the nvidia drivers and now I'm running at 99.9FPS, rarely going below 80FPS. Thanks for the tip.

I actually found another fix that alters the registry so that the vidcard defaults to the highest capable refresh rate for your monitor at each resolution. So you can turn off vsync as well as upping the default refresh rate. Works like a charm.
