Do some research (if you want) and see whether the BIOS chip on your board is in a SOCKET or is permanently SOLDERED to the motherboard. If it is in a socket and can be removed with a chip-puller, you have the option of purchasing a new PLCC (or whatever) chip with the proper or preferred BIOS revision custom-flashed to it. The vendors I had used for this (and they also included ASUS who makes my board) -- will send you the chip with a chip puller. You can even recycle the old PLCC chip.

This offers you the possibility to SAVE the old BIOS (on the original chip) and simply replace the chip with one flashed with the new BIOS.

If the BIOS chip is soldered to the mobo, then you can only update the BIOS by flashing it yourself. If your computer is connected to a UPS batter-backup system, you should be totally safe. If power in your neighborhood is fairly reliable, you're not experiencing any electrical storms at the time you choose to flash, then the risk is fairly small. It only takes less than a minute to complete the flashing.

I'm pretty sure you can rename the file. But I'm also fairly sure you won't need to do so.

I'm two generations behind on "motherboard experience," but I doubt much essential has changed as far as methods of updating BIOS and flashing.

If it's a new motherboard, as you seem to suggest, you could certainly proceed as you say by RMA'ing the board to the vendor/board-maker. Within a narrower window of time, you could RMA it to the reseller, and maybe even get a refund.

What did you determine with regard to whether the BIOS chip is socketed or soldered? You really don't need to follow that path of ordering a replacement chip with the desired BIOS.

I must have made 50 BIOS updates over the last 20 years on various systems. They only time I ever had any trouble arose with an ASUS Striker-Extreme 680i motherboard. It wasn't a power problem; it was the size of the BIOS and apparently ASUS' fault. That's when I began buying BIOS chip replacements instead of flashing.

ESPECIALLY, THOUGH: MAKE SURE YOU RESET THE CURRENT BIOS TO ALL STOCK SETTINGS AND SPEED before flashing the new version. [This indeed may have been my problem with the STriker, now that I think of it.]

Place the bios file on a thumb drive and enter the uefi bios and go to the page with the load bios file on it. It will scan your usb ports and find the bios and ask you if you want to update. Leave it alone once it starts because it will make several passes before it tells you that it's finished. I did this Saturday with my maximus vii hero to get it to the 212 bios. If you want to flash from a thumb drive without booting read your manual and you will find where it tells you to name the file and then what usb port on the rear to put it in before you push the flash button.

I would also advise that you don't try to flash unless the board is attached to a battery backup. If you lose power during the flash you will brick it.

Bios flashback works fairly well. I used it on a Z87 sabertooth to get devil's canyon cpu support. The biggest issue I had was figuring out what to re-name the bios file to.

If you decide to use the bios button on the Hero it works fine.

Just rename the file as it says in the user manual (Section 2.2 page 2-11.)

After you put the USB stick into the proper slot on the back panel, you may have to push and HOLD the button a second to get the light on the button to come on. It will then start flashing. The flashing button will go faster as it completes the update. It will then go out when it is done.

Remove the USB stick and start your computer.

The computer will start and it will automatically restart a few times with a message saying it is updating the "ROG....." ( I don't remember the exact wording).

Don't be alarmed and just let it do this as many times as it needs to until you finally get all the way loaded to Windows or the UEFI screen (If you haven't installed an OS yet)

I could just be paranoid, but I had read that many Hero boards had some component issues on the early bios.

I assumed that using the bios button before ever entering the bios at first start would ensure that I had the latest bios with the latest fixes to identified issues.

It went smoothly and being new to UEFI I didn't have any issues with any board components.

My only mistake was not realizing that this board (and Z97?) no longer separated AHCI from RAID on the Intel SATA and did a first WIN7 SSD install with AHCI settings and had to do-over to re-install my Raid1 later.

For @ElitePro, if you haven't already seen that, If you need raid, you have to set raid at start and then install OS on any SSD and the Intel controller will automatically allow AHCI on the SSD, even though there is not a separate setting for the SSD in BIOS.

ElitePro, If you aren't going to use any Raid drives, yes, you are good to go. But if you ever want to use a Raid setup with SSD or other HDD you will have to switch that Bios setting to RAID and then it won't be able to see that SSD that started on AHCI only. I had to set to raid first and re-install the OS on the SSD with Bios set for Raid to begin with.
