HOw does this fair against the Motorola WT54G (or whatever the model is). I just got FIOS and this router blows. I was gonna move back to the Moto router (while using the FIOS router as a bridge), but wireless is not that great (cannot sustain at a high rate...maxes out at around 32kps )...even in a 900 Sq ft apt.

It is the best Router in the sub $50 group, (comparing it to the Motorola WT54G is an insult to Asus ).

It even better when flashed with the free DD-WRT.

This is the list of DD-WRT feature (click on about in this page) , http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/ind...title=DD-WRT_Docu_(EN)

The list in the link includes all the features of DD-WRT.
Many are provided by the original firmware too.
Some expand the original (like a bigger number of port opening), and some do not exist in the original firmware.

In order to be thorough you must compare this list with the data sheet of your Router.

Some of the popular new features.

* Client Mode (supports multiple connected clients)
* Dynamic DNS (DynDNS, easyDNS, FreeDNS, No-IP, TZO, ZoneEdit, custom, and others)
* OpenVPN Client & Server (only in -vpn build of the firmware)
* PPTP VPN Server & Client
* QoS Bandwidth Management
* Samba FS Automount
* Show Status of Wireless Clients and WDS with System Uptime/Processor Utilization
* Site Survey
* SSH server & client (dropbear)
* Startup, Firewall, and Shutdown scripts (startup script)
* Transmit Power Adjustment (0-251mW, default is 28mW, 100mW is safe)
* WPA over WDS

Hmmm..I have no idea what half those features are for......

Honestly, the Motorola is a good solid router (BTW..I was way off on the model number...it's WR850G), but it fails when downloading "stuff" using wireless when I go one room away. Waiting 1 hour for that download is just unacceptable...

The FIOS router does do a little better, but the connection keeps disconnecting when I go to the other room.

I see that DD-WRT supports this router. What changes should I see if I were to flash it with this firmware?

Will this do bridge mode (i.e., with flashed firmware, either to tomato or DD-WRT, will this work with an Xbox 360?)

Thanks!

Something that hasn't yet been mentioned is that this has a USB2.0 port and works as a network print server. No longer need to leave a PC powered on for it's shared printer port. Just connect this router to your printer, modem and network, and done. Just got mine and it works great with Epson RX580.

I did find the port forwarding options poor using the built-in firmware. Port range would not allow multiple local ports for same app, so had to list each port separately. Works, but not too slick.

Might try DD-WRT firmware, but will that still support the USB print server feature built into this router?

EDIT: Reviews at Newegg state you lose USB print server feature if you change to DD-WRT at this time. That is a deal breaker for DD-WRT, not this excellent router. Original firmware works, but is just a little clunky.

There are DD-WRT version which have USB support, but it is not plug and play though.

I upgraded to the latest firmware DDT_WRT for my router, but I noticed that there is a micro, a mini, and standard version for my router....what is the difference? I did the mini version first, but it would not let me go back to the mini version after I flashed it to the standard version....Does the standard version just have more features that may be useless on my router?

Thanks for the feature updates.

Couple simple questions.

Is DD-WRT as simple to switch to as upgrading stock firmware?
Glancing in forums, I see a lot of stuff that looks like Linux or something else that is not WinXP. I see patches that fix USB printer port so router will print, again, not looking like WinXP based patch. Also, the printer patch seems to drop it down to USB v1.1 instead of factory Asus firmware's default of USB 2.0.

Looks like a lot of work you must do to add features that most will never use (like USB drives), and it might actually degrade things for the common user (built-in USB printer port for example)?

If it is as simple as flashing firmware like the factory flashes update, and access to enter router and change settings is as simple as factory firmware, while maintaining at least the same features as factory firmware, (simple things like pop up help windows when curser is placed over an item, showing what the item is, and what the changes do), then I can see where it would be at least as good as factory firmware for everyone, not just the special few.

I did it for the first time yesterday. It was pretty easy, but for osme you may have to download a specific version before you get the most up tp date. It took me about 5 minutes to do the whole process. Going back to the original firmware is a pain though. It will not let me do it.

updated my router.....

one thing I hate about this firmware.....when you ever make a chnage, you have to manually renew the IP adress.

Sorry this thread has been hi jacked OP.

Thanks! Picked one up. I've been looking for a way to get a cheap print server!

How did you do the flash for this? Is there a link with directions on how to flash to tomato for this router? googling this shows that some people got it working and some ended bricking their router.

Thanks
