Asus Z77 Pro vs Gigabyte Z77 UD3H

I can get the asus board for 180 and the gigabyte for 170.

The wireless card that comes with the asus is a non-factor because I don't need it and don't want it to factor into the decision.

Which is the better board?

Personally I would go for the ASUS because from picking up from various sources the Gigabyte Z77 (most notably the UD5) has some freezing issues with the Ivy Bridge chips.

One more thread about early released junk after sending the reviewer a well QC'd board will send me into the arms of the Mission Critical Intels as I have no patience for bells and whistles that can't be heard....

Why not add the MSI Z77A-GD65 to the list? Mine is fine and OCs with no problems.

Just don't install anything other than drivers - the MSI Bios utility to windows is pretty awful (freezes the PC up for a minute or two on startup of the program.)

I'd recommend Asus Z77 Boards
Gigabyte has some issues about the bios

(which I experienced it before, a friend of mine bought UD5, bios problems, bla bla bla - luckily, the shop that me and my friend went was good enough, they allow us to switch the Gigabyte boards to Z77 V Pro Asus Boards - work sweet)

I have UD5H works like a champ not one lockup. I am guessing most lockups caused by incompatible memory.

I went with gigabyte because asus has the worst rma service out of all the manufacturers. Also getting more for your money.

IMO, the only thing ASUS has on the MSI GD65 is offset voltage. That said, C3 and C6 states are out when you use offset on the ASUS boards. The best MSI has is VDroop adjustments.

I'm trying to pick a board but I'm having a difficult time deciding. When I decided on the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H I came here and read some problems and heard that Gigabyte's customer service and warranty are horrible. Now I'm hearing that Asus have the worst RMA service however they are considered the top company for making quality boards.

What do you guys think about the MSI GD65. How are their boards and RMA service? Which company would be better to go with if I were to ever need RMA service in Canada?

I'm in almost the same boat. When I read the Anandtech review, I was sold on the UD3H but it seems like there are a lot of negative comments about gigabyte in general. In the review it seemed like the best middle of the road option. I haven't actually heard many complaints from owners but I really trust this community to be more clued in than I am after glancing over a few reviews.

What is the real best board for novice overclocking if there isn't a need for integrated wifi or a dozen SATA ports? Is the only real issue with the gigabytes the G.Skill incompatibility and previous boards having issues? Or are there actually other issues out there I'm missing?

I've usually purchased pretty high end ASUS boards in the past but I really don't want to go overkill into 200-300 territory on this build if I don't have to.

and pretty much confirmed never buying Asus.

I wish I had known this before buying my monitor, and hope I never have an issue where I need to RMA it, I always heard great things about ASUS so i am really surprised.

I have an MSI and am afraid of their RMA process too. I've dealt with both ASUS and MSI (by the way, Raja@ASUS on the hardforums WILL respond to posts, which is a good thing) and why I'm inclined to think a separate warranty is a good idea on the motherboard.

Asus has advantages like wifi etc, better brand value, lower volts required for same OC etc, compared to MSI. Besides Asus belongs in a higher tier with that board. Anyway, first choice is Asrock.

The wifi that I could not make work as an AP and could do at best 150M from a 300M router? If you REALLY want wifi, you need to just buy a proper PCIe add in card.
