Hey fellas.
always been a reader of the anandtech forums, first time poster. Im in the market to buy a notebook.

ive already done all my research, but.. cpl things.
1 - does anyone kno anything about the ASUS z81k notebook (as in im definetly going to get this, but wondering if there are any MAJOR problems).

2 - a general question about AMD chips, the Mobile Athlon-64 and the Turion are the same things pretty much? i know the turion is more energy efficent and uses less wattage.. however interms of computer speed, are they equivilent (like the turion m-30 vs m-athlon 3700+)?

for reference here is the notebook im getting - for $1500 from ibuypower.com. (comments about this deal or this seller appreciated too)

-Asus Z81K Notebook, 15.4" 16:10 Wide Screen WSXGA+ 1680x1050 w/Li-Ion Battery, Universal AC Power Adapter, Deluxe Carrying Case
-Mobile AMD® Athlon-64 3700+ CPU
-1024MB [512MB X2] DDR-400 PC-3200 (Corsair brnd)
-ATI 128MB Mobility Radeon 9700 pro 256-bit 3d Video
-60 GB 7200rpm ATA-100 Super Slim Notebook Hard Drive
-8x Dual Format DVD±R/±RW & 16X CD-RW Combo Drive [Z81K]
-and the usual wireless mumbojumbo.

Thanks for your time, and i appreciate the info in advance

Honestly, get a Turion model with an x600 or x700. You won't regret it. This one will be big, heavy, hot and not the latest GPU for gaming.

Edit - As for equivalency, there isn't a chart out yet but the Turion chips are almost the same as the regular AMD64s but they have been tweaked at the transister level to be cooler.

I would suggest looking at the asus z71v. It has a 6600go in it which is not a powerhouse but is later graphics chip then the 9700 pro. It also carries the later P-Ms which thus far have proven to run cooler and perform better then the A64s. The z71v would probably run you about $200 more though. Just my 2 cents.

Z81k is a good notebook, but you're buying old technology (MR 9700 graphics). Turion is about the same performance as a mobile A64.

Go with mparr's suggestion: Z71v is a great notebook for the money and the 6600 will do VERY well in games.

im setting up ubuntu Linux AMD64-k8 on my girlfriends new Z81k,it was like
$1280 at avadirect, (took about 2 weeks, so check stock)

"It has a 6600go in it which is not a powerhouse but is later graphics chip then the 9700 pro"

so newer is always better??? sometimes the companys make new technology to lower manufacture costs, not just to improve! not to mention, the ATI 9700 mobility is much better performace , its also a strong, very reliable, versitle and more powerfull GPU. the ati 9700 is also more modable/overclockable/optimizable)

moble athlon64 is better than turon64, just like a dualcore P4 is to a Pentium-M
if your looking at an asus z81k your the kind of guy who wont deal with a whimpy notebook
the bettery life aint even bad.

these sales reps just ove pushing new technology

god i wish this one was min o well, its for my boo
