In this graph we have a 40nm single GPU card using more power than a 55nm dual GPU card?

Yea, I don't see how Nvidia is gong to make a dual GPU part without blowing the PCIE limit out of the water. They haven't left themselves much room in that regard.

Overall, I didn't think Fermi was that bad (even with the power consumption) until I watched and listened to the Hardocp videos. I would not want to game with that thing in my case.

Not to mention my 400w PSU means I am not an enthusiast and shouldn't complain about power.

Lets ignore the fact that a 400w PSU could run an HD5850 or HD5870. They aren't enthusiast cards.

In fact, the only single GPU cards it couldn't run are all made by NV, hmm...

I think it's even worse since they said that on heavily overclocked systems they saw 900 watts peak power draw on the 480 SLI setup since an overclocked i7 can eat quite a bit of power.

Fermi is like nVidia's NetBurst, lol.

Hot, power hungry things are often loud things, and there are no disappointments here. At 70dB the GTX 480 SLI is the loudest card configuration we have ever tested, while at 64.1dB the GTX 480 is the loudest single-GPU card, beating out even our unreasonably loud 4890

NO THANK YOU

Yeah, having just read At's review I'm not impressed at all with Fermi, but I'm glad that I got my money's worth : Asus 5870/5850 and a 5970 ...oh and a backup Asus 4350

I have one of the original 295s and even that is pretty loud- I couldn't imagine the 480 being louder than that, but I guess it is.

I don't understand all the bashing. If they gave you one for free, I'm sure you'd all want it.

If they gave me one for free I'd have to buy a new power supply before I could even use it.

Bleh well I guess we saw it coming, though I was hoping the rumors would not pan out. Guess I'm holding out for next gen or mid-gen revision.

250W TDP for GTX480, 188W for the HD5870.
62W difference in TDP, 100W difference in system load under gaming conditions (consider potential difference due to efficiency of the PSU)
I'm assuming that Anand and Kyle can afford quality test bench PSUs. Given the high load of the card, let's assume peak efficiency (say a PSU load of 40-60%) so 100W difference at the wall = ~85W actual.

The bashing is 99% from PC enthusiasts and some fan boys who have waited a while for video cards. I guess PC enthusiasts generally want the best in terms of performance, and some were expecting stiffer competition and some possible price drops so they could buy some high end cards. I'm guessing some are satisfied 58xx series customers that are joining in the bashing, it's been a tough and gossipy past 6 months with rumors and speculation going on about how good Fermi was to be, etc...In the end people will expel their anger out but also have a laugh a it.

Then there's folks in certain strictly nvidia forums that would humiliate you if you posted a thread about an innocent question about crossfireX performance, they'd tell you to discuss the matter "elsewhere", so all that stuff piles up for some I guess...

For me, well having purchased over a grand of ATI cards in the last 2 months, I'm just happy at the outcome and glad I got my money's worth so I'm mostly happy about it.

It's all good. But the rest of the average Joe's wouldn't care

So you're saying it's a good deal if priced at $0 ?

If it were priced the same as a 5870 then I'd still be saying "good deal" since you gain 7-15% speed in exchange for the noise, heat and power draw.

I've been told that no one cares about that, it doesn't matter. Hardware enthusiasts don't care about the efficiency of NASCAR engines, or something like that. :/

It only matters inasmuch as one needs to dissipate that heat inside their cases. I suppose the same applies to NASCAR engines inasmuch as you'd need more pitstops to keep the thing fueled.

The AT review used a 1200W PSU that he has in for review, but there is no review yet.
Given how much efficiency tanks at low loads (e.g. 25%) and the fact that they comment on efficiency as an issue in the idle testing, a large difference in efficiency between 25% load and 33% load is entirely possible, but it depends on the PSU characteristics.

That's with a 900w PSU.
I wasn't sure exactly what point the dramatic increase in efficiency was because AT is dog slow, but thankfully a google image search provided some goods.

We're not looking at peak efficiency with 320w and 420w loads on a 1200w PSU, but the difference might be only around 5% or so worst case, and not the 10% I thought it might be.

Well said. I sold my 285 to buy a 5870, and sold my 5870 a month ago. I'm playing Mass Effect 2 on an $89 GTS 250.

I was so impressed with 5870, such a well balanced card. I *hope* to grab a couple Asus Matrix 5870's and call it a year..
