At my wits end with GTX 460 SLI/Nvidia...

I am getting CTD in some games with my 2X 460's in SLI.

The games that are the culprit (so far as I know) are BFBC2, Medal of Honor (Beta). (Most other games play flawlesly)

Now here is the thing, both of these games run native in DX11. I changed the config files to force DX10, and the CTD's continued. I then bumped it down to DX9, and viola! No crashes at all for either game in extended (hours) of gameplay.

This is clearly a driver/software issue, right ?

It didn't matter if my cards were at stock clocks, overclocked, auto fan or 100% fan (my temps are fine btw) The games will always crash in DX11 mode. Also, when it crashes my audio ALWAYS starts stuttering when it gets to my desktop, I have to reset my sound card in device managerto get it to stop. I dont know if that is a hint at what the issue can be...

What can the issue be !?

I have waited patiently forto help fix this DX11 problem, but a google search reveals that nobody else seems to be having this issue, or that it is not widespread. I am beginning to think it is just my system.

I really don't want to do a full of Win 7 to see if that fixes the issue, and I should point out that the previously mentioned games ran flawlessly on the 2X 5870's that I had a few months ago....in DX11 mode. This is clearly an Nvidia/ GTX 460 issue IMO, not an OS/Hardware issue.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me, any suggestions are welcomed.

Things I have tried:

Installed all drivers that run on GTX 460, including Beta drivers.
Re-installed drivers numerous times, using driver cleaner.
Updated to latest Physx drivers for my Physx card.
Set all clocks to stock speeds and turned fan speeds up to keep my Gpus frosty cold.

I beleive I tried disabling the Physx card, and SLI altogether, and to no avail.

I need some suggestions from all you Nvidia faithful ! Thank YOU!

Edit: Is there a way to log a CTD ? How can I tell what is failing when it crashes ?

You say your cards work fine in DirectX 9 mode. Remember we've only had 1 WHQL and 1 beta driver for our 460's so maybe the next driver will fix the problem but I'm sure it will fix it soon enough.

BFBC2 and MoH beta both use the same engine as far as I am aware (whatever DICE's latest engine is).
So it seems like it's an engine related issue (as in the cards aren't playing nice with the engine).

Not sure what to suggest, but it's not a DX/general issue, but DX10/11 in that engine with those cards issue.

I just read on Wikipedia that Medal of Honor 2010 uses Unreal Engine 3 for single player and the DICE Frostbite engine for muliplayer.

This is a beta game so I would be a little more forgiving here.

I would get on the support forums for both EA and nVidia to see what the deal is with BFBC2. This game has been out for 7+ months and should have most issue resolved.
I assume you've downloaded the latest patches for the game?

Remember your video card came out AFTER the game did, its possibly the software drivers need more work.

You are playing the MOH multiplayer beta? It sounds to me like the culprit here is the Frostbite engine in DX11 and not your video cards since that appears to be the common link.

Can you try any other DX11 games like Metro 2033?

Have you tried physically removing one of the gtx460s at a time to test them? I had a bad gtx460 that would make my system randomly crash even with sli disabled and in the 2nd pcie slot

Im gonna turn a blind eye to GTX460s having driver and crashing problems. Thats just not happening to Nvidia hardware.

Well if they are true.. i guess i should count myself lucky then

these are sli/dice engine issues, as long as you're only using one then you should be gtg.

@OP: have you tried the beta drivers that came out a few weeks ago? I get better performance with them, though I haven't had any stability issues with my games.

Dices engine and SLI/Crossfire have had a lot of CTD issues with DX10/11. It's all over the place, kinda sucks, definitely on the DICE side of things, but hopefully can be fixed with some new drivers from ATI/Nvidia.

Thank you for all the tips guys, I will try and answer some questions:

Yes, I am using the latest beta drivers from Nvidia, they have given me great performance, yet still unstable in some games.

I did not try to remove one card at a time, do you think that is worth a shot ?

Metro 2033 plays PERFECTLY with these cards, so I imagine it is not a straight-up DX11 issue.

I will check the thread you linked Groov, thanks.

Hi OP, maybe some help for you in this thread

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=170238&st=620&start=620

There have been issues with 460 SLI and BFBC2 and some other games, the latest betas were supposed to have addressed them but some people still say they are having issues.

Yep, I'm experiencing the same random CTD issue that the OP is...and I've got a single GTX 480... I'm running 260.63 Beta drivers and BFBC2 runs great now but MOH beta stutters horribly in DX11 just like BC2 did before. Hopefully NV will apply the same fix to MOH in the WHQL 260.XX package before they release them...

Is this a hint... I checked my log viewer, and when it crashes last night it came up with an issue for my sound card:

Faulting application name: ASUSAUDIOCENTER.EXE, version: 0.3.0.13, time stamp: 0x4b9eea18
Faulting module name: VmixP8.dll, version: 1.0.0.12, time stamp: 0x49d47e88
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00001042
Faulting process id: 0xcb8
Faulting application start time: 0x01cb641a06f4a25d
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\ASUS Xonar DX Audio\Customapp\ASUSAUDIOCENTER.EXE
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\ASUS Xonar DX Audio\Customapp\VmixP8.dll
Report Id: dd139419-d010-11df-aec3-00241dcdb2fc

Now, is that in issue RESULTING from my app. crash ? Or did it cause my crash ?

I'm not an Nvidia Vs. ATI guy, but I will have no problem picking up some ATI 6*** series cards when they release, if these issues arent solved shortly.

The ASUS XONAR sound card drivers could very well be causing the problems you are experiencing.

Do you have onboard sound on your motherboard? Try taking out the sound card and uninstalling the drivers and see if that does anything.

Do you think just disabling the card in device manager would work ? Or do I need to physically remove it ?

It sounds like a memory allocation issue to me. Are you using 32 bit windows? I remember seeing something like this in old games and people need to make registry change to allow/limit memory allocation on hardwares.

Could very well be the soundcard or the Asus software. type 'msconfig' into the windows search bar and scroll to the 'startup' tab. Uncheck anything to do with Asus sound, click apply and restart. Then see if you experience the same problem in games.

Hmm, went to msconfig startup, and there was not any options for Asus sound card, even though the control panel starts up at launch... ?

It will be any software with regard to Asus, look in the filepaths, if its something like C:\programs\Asus-whatever.
