but i was wondering if there were any real differences between the different types of drives (lite-on, verbatim, mitsumi, aopen, etc). since they're all labeled as cendyne drives, is the performance difference really significant?

Not much of a performance difference, but there are feature/compatability differences.

1) Lite-On offers a "Smart Media Detector" or something to help with certain media. Lite-Ons typically have the fastest digital audio extraction.

2) Mitsumi supports the Mt. Rainier format (I think).

You get the idea.

Personally I'm trying to go with the Lite-On as the DVD drive I have from them is ab-fab.

Which is a better drive, getting this CenDyne deal (Mitsumi or Lite-On), or for the same price the PacofocDigital 32x CD-R from staples (they are syaing it's a Cybermedia drive in the other thread). Note: it's the same price for me cause OfficeMax charges tax... so $40 either way. What do you guys thigk? (Wish I had gotten in on the Lite-On for $30 two weeks ago!)

I have no idea about the Pacific Digital.

I personally like Lite-On's so they get my vote.

I ordered mine with a 100 spindle 16X Memorex 80min CD-Rs for another $10 (after rebate).

CenDyne doesn't make CD-RW drives, they sell drives mfg by other companys like lite-on, verbatim, mitsumi and aopen. There are reviews and information about these drives posted at the beginning of this thread.

i got my Drive today, the box it came in was all bruised but the drive's box was perfect. I opened it... and bam, a lite-on. I dont follow to much the CDr reviews but i dunno which is better the Lite-On or the 16mb one... forgot the name tho.

OK, mine arrived today. It appears to be a LiteOn (Model # LTR-3212S, manu Feb 2002) with a bright red "Verbatim" printed on the face. So, do I flash its firmware with the latest LiteOn firmware, do nothing with the firmware but install the LiteOn software, do nothing with the firmware and install the software that comes with the drive "Verbatim Media Plus, seems to include all Nero products"?
Am I trying to make this too complicated?
