I guess my favorite steel would be S30V/S35V but AUS8 is fine with me too. Like I said before, it doesn't really matter to me as long as it doesn't rust easily. Basically any modern blade steel is going to be plenty for my EDC tasks, and enough for any hard use should I ever need it for that.

I have a moderate collection of folders (around 20 or so); my favorites are a Zero Tolerance 0450, Boker Mini Kwaiken, SOG Flash I. And of course a Microtech Ultratech OTF, cause I'm a total BA.

never liked folding knives, i'd go for a nice 12" genuine nepali kukri, although i gotta say the Cold Steel Tai-Pan is really something .. except when it comes to the price.

I've become quite a fan of the kukri, I just can't get into the traditional handles. They always feel small, and I need something more resilient than horn or wood. The blades, hammered from leaf spring steel, are great though. Most of it comes from either Toyotas or Mercedes as I understand it, both sources of good quality steel.

I'm all for supporting people who work hard (and making kukris def counts) but for the money I think the basic CS kukri in OS-1 is hard to beat. I can use it all day in the summer and never have it slip in my hands. I love multi alloy construction and folding in my blades, but the overral design is just as important if not more so. Daggers are very niche. Delicate tips. Difficult to explain. I'd rather have a spine on that piece so I can baton kindling with it.

You can defintely spend a lot of money fast on knives. Still, there are worse things to get the collector bug over.

My favorite work knife in the sub $30 range is the Ontario Rat I in AUS-8. I have big hands and like the larger blade, but it's little brother the Rat II is a nice knife as well. The pricier D2 versions are a good deal too. I know there are better knives for more money, but aren't there always? If you can find the made in the USA Kershaw Leek in 14C28N for $30 that's pretty good deal.

I'm a bang for the buck kind of guy and what I pay for a knife makes a huge difference to me. I bought my Rat I for $24, which I'm sure is half the reason I love it so much. Just like a $50 Leek doesn't impress me much, but a $30 Leek would be sweet. And, to a point, I find the style, blade size and fit of a knife is more important to me than the steel it's made out of, at least to a point.

Lately, I've been carrying the budget Spyderco Tenacious in 8Cr13MoV I got for $38. 3.4" plain blade, nice Spyderco fit and finish, G-10 scales and Spyderco does wonders with their heat treatment on the budget Chinese stainless steel, IMHO.

Anyone own a Real Steel knife? I vaguely remember hearing positive things about them and there is a good sale with 2 days left on drop.com (formerly massdrop.com.)

Real Steel H6 Blue Sheep Folding Knife for $30 with free shipping.

For a $30 work EDC knife this is about perfect for me as I like larger blades. 3.75" Swedish Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel blade with G10 handle scales. The knife is about $50+ everywhere else I've looked. Kind of reminds me of my Ontario Rat I.

Good for you. Most of us own knives as tools or just collect them because they are cool.

Personally, I would never want to fight anyone, let alone with a knife. But I'd shoot your ass if I couldn't convince you to leave me alone or otherwise get away from you. So, don't pick fights at all and you'll live a longer, happier life. It's much more fun to be nice.

Probably close to what it's actually worth - in today's market. I was non-impressed with my Real Steel Sea Eagle. Seemed cheap as anything. Tried to install new neon handle scales but it didn't come apart entirely. So it sits to this day partially dissembled. Stripped screw?

Collect them like I do watches, I just like them, no need to go to war. And don't bring a knife to a gun fight, you'll live longer~~~Capt. Obvious...

Anybody actually use these fancy knives?

I use mine all the time, but it's cheap and easily replaced.

Most of my knife fights are with Amazon boxes

I currently have close to 50 knives and the most I've ever spent on one is around $50. User stuff like Buck, Kershaw, CRKT, Gerber, Ontario, Spyderco and such. I do own a few nice Condor machetes that were gifts but they were probably both <$100 each . And they sit on a shelf while a $20 Brazilian Tramontina (best machete for the money, IMHO) does any work necessary.

I like nice knives, but I enjoy hunting for deals almost as much, so finding a good sale is sport to me. Plus, I'm poor. I have to make my limited toy budget stretch as far as possible.

And any knife I buy needs to be something I'm not afraid to use for work. I wouldn't mind a $$$$$ knife but I'd be hesitant to use it knowing how hard it would be for me to replace. Or I'd sell it and buy several nice user knives.

This thread forced me to dig out my "good" knife. A couple hundred years ago, guys would come up to me at the gun range and ask, "What knife do you carry?" When I told them I didn't have one they would just look at me and stare.

Next gun show I bought this one for $92, problem solved.

Benchmade

Looks like it was a pretty good "investment".

The Benchmade mini AFCK, my first liner lock love. Awesome knife, think I paid $104 for mine back in 1996 or 97, I forget.

Did everything I asked of it for years, then lost it in a river in Maine one summer. Still chokes me up *sniffle* Benchmade makes great stuff. It's my time with that knife that led me to choose the Manix 2 for EDC I think.

Sorry for your loss. Maybe should not even mention that folks are asking 2 to 3 times your purchase price on the used market.

Pretty impressed that you could identify it that quickly. I had it in my hand and it took a good bit of time.

I have about ~$700 into my PM2 now between purchase of the knife (S110 V), full Flytanium setup, and the custom work done by a machine shop. I didn't like how the titanium was getting scuffed up in my pocket (keys) so I had them re bead-blast the scales and then had them coated in titanium nitride. It's my daily carry and the second most expensive knife I own (in terms of what I spent on it).

And yes, it is primarily used to break down the endless waves of Amazon boxes.

Does anyone have one of those Chris Reeve Sebenza knives? They definitely look nice, like the perfect EDC knife, but the price is... well... yeah. To me that's a couple hundred dollar knife, AT MOST, and the rest of the price is because it's made by Chris Reeve and so then you can say you have a Sebenza, not because the knife is made from ground up baby bones or something (to justify that price). COME AT ME SEBENZA OWNERS, let the justifications begin!

I try to have a place for each of my knives. It's a struggle to not become a "collector". I want to be intimately familiar with my blades, and a 'knife of the day' doesn't lend itself to that. Everything I have needs to be usable, and when you've dropped hundreds on a knife, you tend to not use it for fear of marring it, and then it's kinda pointless. I'd like to have a small collection of genuine historic military knives; especially a Faribairn-Sykes, but don't want to spend the $ for a dust collector.

^^ Link to Dust Collector model? Sounds intriguing. Who makes it?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairbairn–Sykes_fighting_knife

They sell for hundreds of dollars for originals. I'd like to have an example from every participating military force in WWII. Then we get to museum stuff of ancient history, and I could spend many thousands of dollars collecting knives. My real interest is WWII though. The gear's theoretically usable today since it's modern era stuff, but old enough to be interesting. It was also a world changing moment in time, and a time where everyone was united no matter what side you were on. It's just an interesting period in history, and something I grew up with, since much of my immediate family was in the war in one capacity or another.

edit:
More applicable to pocket knives, a guy I worked with found one of these in a box of junk at a flea market...

It's a Nazi paratrooper knife. it was so covered in funk, he didn't know what he had til he cleaned it up. It's a highly copied design, but I'm about 90% sure his was original and genuine. I was jealous :^D

Is yours an ATS-34 or D2 steel blade? I'm surprised there's a used market for them at all, no way I'd have sold mine.

Just noticed your avatar is Jonathan Goldsmith. Love that guy, he's into helping dogs and Anatolians in particular. Them's my babies.

Wtf you joined on my birthday.
