AT Shot of the Day Thread

After two years of trying different cameras, filters, and settings I finally found a combination that almost perfectly matches what is seen by the eye for shortwave fluorescent mineral photography. These were shot with a Sony RX100, color temp=7000K, auto HDR.

For comparison, this is the next best photo I was able to get using a Lumix LX5.

I sometimes miss working in microscopy.

What did you use to illuminate these? Just a UV light? I don't really know much about mineral fluorescence. In cellular imaging it's all filters for specific excitation wavelengths, dichroic filters and emission filters, all lit by a Hg or Xe arc lamp.

I wonder if you could replace the lamps in this thing with some UV lamps.

I'm sure there's room in the budget for that, right?

UV lights for fluorescent mineral use are Xe lamps generally labeled shortwave, mid-range, and longwave.

longwave = UVA = 368 nm
mid-range = UVB = 312 nm
shortwave = UVC = 254 nm = disinfecting lamp

The bulb for short and mid-range is the same but different filters are used to block the rest of the spectrum.

Longwave, which passes through most glass, is the hardest to filter. UV(0) filters allow too much UV into the camera which messes up the exposure.

Nice, I just got a 1600mm lens, I can't wait to try it out, but waiting for the T mount adapter to come in.

I will also be tempted to get a teleconverter so I can stack em. I don't know what kind of results that would give though.

Can't wait till summer so I can go out and get more pictures. With the cold it's just not fun being out for too long and hard on the fingers and camera.

Any of you guys getting blood moon photos? I'm kind of thankful that the thunderstorms will force me to not get up at 2:30 AM for pictures.

I got a couple keepers. It was 40F and I froze my butt off but it was worth it.
