I emailed a local bander who forwarded my inquiry to a banders’ list. The bird was banded in 2014 in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern Arizona and hasn’t been sighted since. So it’s at least six years old. The location where the bird was banded is just under a hundred miles straight line distance from where I saw it. Following reasonably suitable habitat, it is closer to a hundred fifty mile journey.

That's pretty cool. Just getting clear photos of that band number is an accomplishment. I've banded thousands of hummingbirds (and passerines) and it was always really great when we caught someone else's bird or one that was a bit old.

Green King Fisher, male, Santa Cruz River at Carmen, Arizona

This is the first time I've seen this bird. He's been fishing so his feathers are wet and not showing his brilliant green colors.

He just caught a fish in this pic. I'm going back out there later this week with the scope to try to get better pics.

I just noticed that his color scheme is pretty much the same as the elegant trogon I've been posting pics of for the last few months. If you do an image search for green king fishers to get better photos, you'll see what I mean.

This egret (I think) came around quite often and wanders around this area. I guess someone has been dumping food regularly or something. (St Thomas, USVI)

In this pic, he is inserting his head in a potential nest cavity and calling into the hole. I think is trying to convince the female to come and check out the nest site.

It must have worked because they were enjoying each other's company this morning. There is a pic but posting it would violate the rules of the babe thread, let alone the decorum of this family friendly channel.

Harris's hawk, Tucson, AZ this morning. Light was a bit low as the sun was just breaking the horizon.

Harris's hawks are communal, living and hunting in groups. This one is calling its homies.

One responded so this one flew up to the top of a palm tree to get an eye on the other hawk and then took off to join it on a power line.
