agree. hit up both spots briefly and they were totally packed, reminded me a lot of visiting Niagara Falls. Would still love to go back and try to be there during sunrise/sunset or later at night for some astro though. There's also tons of great spots in surrounding areas!

Was shooting these nice flowers, and while editing noticed I accidentally captured this guy, so I cropped it down to bring him out a bit. 1833x1139 pixels cropped out of a 6000x4000 image:

I posted these photos I took a few weeks ago in ATOT while discussing Canada Geese, so I thought I might as well post them here too.

Got this ah heck the other day walking around a park with a photographer friend. Let him try my 105 macro on his D750 (amazing, much bigger difference than I was expecting, makes me want full frame all the more!).

This shot however was taken with my 35mm Sigma + D5200 while he played with the 105. On the most part it was pretty hard to get anything, because 35 is relatively wide for trying to get up close to bugs, but the minimum focusing distance is not bad, I managed to get this one and a couple others that I'm really happy with. This one shot at f/4 1/400sec.

I had my very first "dragonfly shoot". I had never had the occasion before, or really pursued it. I found one that decided to take a rest and put up with me, so tried getting a few shots. This one is not the sharpest, but one of my favorites as it captured that last moment right as its patience expired and it began to lift off as I held the branch with one hand trying to get the shot with the other:

I wasn't able to get the money shot (big googley eyes), but, I did enjoy this rear view with the focus on the head:

And the pose in this one:

Fun factoid from the Smithsonian:

"Dragonflies were some of the first winged insects to evolve, some 300 million years ago. Modern dragonflies have wingspans of only two to five inches, but fossil dragonflies have been found with wingspans of up to two feet."

Got back from a 3 day, 20+ mile hike in the sierras. Beautiful area, but I was too exhausted to take many photos.

Dug out the old macro extension tubes to give them a go on the 105mm. Right as I stepped out the door, I noticed this colourful critter:

in hindsight, i should have stopped it down quite a bit more than f/7.1, but still. neat!

Brown pelican and black-bellied whistling ducks at the waste water treatment ponds, Amado, AZ. Pelicans are a monsoon rarity in this area and this one probably should be getting back to the sea before the rivers run dry.

What focal length are you using in this shot? Focus stacking?
It's technically a "prime" (fixed focal length), 105mm. I have it on a DX body which is a 1.5x crop factor, so that's a field of view equivalent to roughly 157mm focal length on a full-frame body. At 157mm equivalent, it is a little bit on the long side, but it has VR which helps a lot.

There's no focus stacking, that's something I would like to try though but it seems hard to ensure ideal conditions to get stack-worthy frames in the field. That particular frame was shot at f/22 and the fly was sideways which helped, plus I cropped in a fair bit too. Here's a similar frame I captured but at f/16, you can see the eye detail is a little better but much of the rest is not very sharp:

I gotta say, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's eclipse photos.

I have a crappy camera with crappy lenses, so I always check this thread to see everyone's great photography skills instead.

Thanks, I have a 105mm lens as well and it looked similar, though yours is sharper in more areas than my typically comes out so I assumed some kind of stacking involved. Cool shot. How many did you take that didn't turn out? I like to do without a tripod in most situations and the 105 can be unwieldy to handhold.
