I'm currently receiving coverage from AT&T and considering switching to T-Mobile in December when my service ends.

Any comments or suggestions? Please tell me of any good and bad experiences of each (regarding customer support, call quality, phone selection, etc.) so I can decide whether or not to switch.

Thanks!

When you switch, you usually get a good deal for new customer promotion, retention offer is non existence in most cases.

after 5 horrible years with cingular/att, switched to t-mobile 4 years ago and never looked back.

unless att retrained all of the CSR's, the majority of them are still retarded. and CS closes at 9pm vs. never with t-mobile. t-mobile CS has won awards, and i can attest to its greatness.

coverage-wise, t-mobile is fine for me. as long as it works for you, ignore the att fanboys who'll say "ATT has the MOST bars!!!oneoneone"

Well....in california if you're going to stick with GSM only, ATT's coverage is far superior to T-Mobile's. As for CS, I have a FAN # tied to my account so I get transferred to business CS, which in any telecom is alway better than regular CS. I also love ATT's web interface, best I've seen for a cell company.

BTW, I only recently switched to ATT from Sprint, and before that Verizon, so no, I'm not a fanboy of ATT, but I've yet to have a bad experience with them.

That's weird, I'm there until 10, and our center is 24/7/365. But hey, we're probably still retarded

So it's looking good for T-Mobile. AT&T Customer Support is pretty frustrating at times, which is a plus for T-Mobile. AT&T gets a lot of reception in areas where others doesn't, it seems however, just wondering if that can be confirmed or not.

yeah, att has wider coverage, but the question is: is that of any use to the potential customer? all that matters is that the company have coverage where you need it most, and the only way to find that out is to test drive the service. 15-day risk free cancellation with all providers now, i believe (30-days in california, iirc.) att has the best coverage in small-town, georgia? perfectly useless for me.

and about att cs: i stand corrected. apparently it is available around the clock now. why don't they just call it '24 hour CS' vs. 'after hours support'? the CSR i talked to said it's only for emergencies, whatever that means. maybe somebody can clarify.

regardless, i gave cingular multiple chances back in the day, and actually thought about opening a business/premier account 2 years ago. low and behold, when i called them up i got tossed around and blindly transferred multiple times, which was a rerun of my experience with them before i left. finally, i just said to hell with them. maybe it's changed since they took over ATT. i always wondered why SBC got rid of the cingular name after the buyout though. regardless of what they call themselves, it won't erase the bad taste in my mouth, and i refuse to have anything to do with that company ever again.

Wrong forum!

Ok, now that that is out of the way:

Customer service: I've been with TMO since 2003. Good customer service. I've heard first-person accounts of many bad stories with AT&T customer service.

Network coverage: in theory, AT&T + old Cingular network > TMO. In practice, this depends from location to location. TMO has excellent coverage in every city I've been in and along the interstates. I can't say for rural areas.

Hot deals: in Feb I jumped on a deal by TMO that gave me a Dash for $50 with a 1 year contract. There's also the Sprint SERO deal going on, but that's a two year contract.

I went T-Mobile in 2003 and haven't even considered changing providers. Been happier with T-Mobile then I've ever been with Verizon and At&t...

i usually don't like citing wikipedia, but this article has decent supporting material. apparently SBC/ATT excels in bullshit marketing too. sources are in the main article.

from wikipedia

During the first quarter of 2006, Telephia reported that during an extensive nationwide test of major wireless carriers in 350 metropolitan markets around the country, Cingular dropped the fewest number of calls across the country. Cingular in turn began aggressively advertising the "Allover Network," citing Telephia as "the leading independent research company." Telephia's report was in stark contrast to the Consumers Union publication, Consumer Reports, based on a survey of 50,000 of its members in 18 cities, which criticized Cingular for static and dropped calls.[17] Furthermore, J.D. Power and Associates consistently ranked Cingular at or near the bottom of every geographical region in its 2006 Wireless Call Quality Study, which is based on a smaller survey of 23,000 wireless users.

Telephia, which tests wireless networks by making over 6 million calls per year in what it claims is the world's largest wireless network test program, initially refused to provide details on its study, and a spokesman for the company has said, according to the Boston Globe, that "Cingular shouldn't have even mentioned the company's name to a reporter."[18] The research company later stated that Cingular did indeed have a "statistically-significant lower dropped-call rate than the competition across some market/time period groupings," but that Telephia had "no knowledge of the specific methodology (markets, time periods or statistical thresholds) that Cingular used for its 'lowest dropped call' claim."[19] AT&T Wireless does not advertise this 'advantage' any more, as of August 2007. The company has pulled all related material.

i heart tmo. try em out, they give you 14 or 28 days no questions asked to give it the old jr. college try

customer service is absolutely outstanding. only negative is the speed difference when tethering. page rendering on smartphones is about the same though, so if you never tether it should be a nobrainer. I'm spending $5.99/month for unlimited data on my iphone via the tzones workaround too

I have been with TMO since 2003 and never considered anyone else. All of my CS experiences have been positive.

Coverage has never been an issue for me.

I can't really say what other providers are like because I've been with AT&T/Cingular for a few years now. In my experience, AT&T has pretty awesome coverage most everywhere I've been, especially here in Philly. That doesn't really mean anything though because ANY service should have great coverage in urban areas. I know a lot of people who say that T-Mobile's coverage sucks and whatnot. However, my friend went to Hawaii in August and she got decent coverage on every island she went to. I'm assuming that if you can get good coverage in Hawaii, you can get good coverage in a lot of places. I also know that T-Mobile seems to have some good cheap data plans and some kick ass CS. I've never had any problems with the AT&T/Cingular CS and I've had really good experiences with the company, so IMO, you couldn't go wrong with either.

EDIT: My roommate has T-Mobile and recently lost his phone. Last night after 15 minutes on the phone with CS and the insurance people, he had a brand new phone, SIM card and all, scheduled to be delivered to him by November 1st. Just thought I'd share.

ATT coverage here in SF is more superior than TMO. I am personally happy with ATT and don't plan on switching.

Check out carrier coverage stats in your area by checking some of the blogs online. If you're looking for an "advanced device" (i.e. Windows Mobile or BlackBerry) and you're a heavy data user, go for AT&T (and get a 3G phone.) If you just want to make calls and send texts, T-Mobile's got some great plans.

If you port your number and then decide you don't like the service, can you port your number again to a new service?

Switch to the carrier that has the best coverage in your area. That should be your number one concern. All other things being equal, pick the carrier that has the equipment you want.

AT&T currently has more towers in the US than T-Mobile, but that doesn't mean there are more in your area. That is the main thing you will want to research. Don't trust the phone reps. Find someone in your area with the service and ask them about signal reception. I am with AT&T/Cingular and have been for years. I never had a billing or technical issue which was not promptly taken care of by their customer support.

I've had T-Mo since 2002 or so. I had no coverage problems in the metro Chicago area. Moved to the Seattle area in 2004... the coverage isn't quite so good. Sometimes I even have reception problems in my work building in DT Seattle. My employer supplied me with a BB on the T-Mo network; it has similar problems in my work building when I'm in the center of the building (away from the windows).

Man, I have been using Tmobile ever since they were.....i forgot the company name. Anyways, my only grip is that service can be really spotty in the worst and weirdest areas. For instance, it is not that good at the Natick Mall, but it is fine accross the street. That is my only issue. They have also seemed to have taken care of the dead zones in Andover, Ma.
