What's the best way to try out AT&T's network other than paying $60 for their 2 GB for 4G data prepaid? I want to get off of Verizon's network and switch over to something in my area. I've ordered a Lumia 521 to test out on T-Mo's network since all I have is a Verizon iPhone 5.

I believe the VZW iPhone 5 is compatible on AT&T.

Anyway, I just need the best/cheapest way to test it.

Thanks!

I believe Net10 uses AT&T's network.

I don't understand Net10's plans at all or their pay-as-you-go prepaids. Is it saying that $20 a month will just buy me minutes, and that's it? I want to also test out AT&T's data and not just their call quality.

EDIT: Just checked, and they're the same as StraightTalk.. meaning, Net10 no longer offers AT&T SIMs, and even if they did, they're capped at 1.5 GB of data per month. >_<

Well $45/month gets you unlimited voice, text, and "unlimited" (~2GB) data.

If this is just for coverage testing, why not just get a SIM off of eBay and activate PayGo with a $10 PIN? You can also test with the plans from their MVNOs (AirVoice or H2O Wireless), which has the same coverage.

Or, if you need to test the data in addition to voice/txt coverage, then the minimum plan is the $25/month + $5 data add-on. Data options are also available from MVNOs.

If you want to test the LTE though, it has to be the $60/month plan.

Good luck finding a ATT MVNO with a cap higher than 1.5-2GB.
Net10 does sell att sims still, you just have to type a zip code that doesn't have t-mobile coverage or buy one from a dealer/online for $1.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. The reason why I would choose AT&T is because I know they have the coverage. I guess I really meant to ask what is the best MVNO, but it looks like no one is sadly.

Here's hoping that T-Mo supports my area with a fast network and at least moderate coverage!

I just switch from the att go phone to tmo's prepaid. Im in nyc so tmo coverage is ample.

Im on the 30 bucks a month plan off tmo which is 100 min and 5 gb of data. I make 100% of my call out using voip apps, i dont talk much per month anyway.

I like the att go phone but since they jack up the price so high, I didn't want to pay for it anymore.

Almost all the mvno sucks, thats why I never tried them.. I know a lot of people had and eventually switch back

So I am currently trying out T-Mobile, but either the 521 is terrible or they throttle so much that data is nearly unusable! I can barely get webpages to load, but if I try and stream something or download something, it takes 10 minutes to even get something going. This is with at least 3/4 bars of 4G.

What do you guys think? I might check out AT&T's prepaid with the $60 2GB data plan. I wish it were more, but honestly, there's nothing I can do about that currently. >_<

Unfortunately or fortunately the 521/520 is a 3G phone not 4G. I am not sure what speed AT&T prepaid runs at.

What do you mean by that? The 521 shows up with a 4G icon and then if it can't pick that up, it shows 2G. Is there actually 3G or is 4G supposed to be it?

OOps my mistake late night and misreading the specs from Nokia. Both phones are 4G. I was tempted to get the 521 but reception where I live is nonexistent at this time for T-Mobile. My apologies.

There is a forum that specializes in all Windows phones, it is called Windows Phone Central. There should be some info on this situation at that forum if no one here can answer your problem.

AT&T GoPhone now offers LTE. I'm probably moving to the 2GB for $60 plan down the road.

Ugh. So I tested T-Mobile's prepaid, and it seemed like either their data sucks here or their reception, but from what I've read, T-Mo's prepaid doesn't get full access to their network. I really want to jump from VZW. I just don't know how to go about doing that in my area.

I live in a smaller T-Mo area which is why I'm concerned about the speed/coverage. I tried the Lumia 521 for a few days, but I barely could pull anything down. It was just disgustingly slow.

T-Mo seems to have better coverage in my area so I want to try them out first. Is it possible to sign up for a contract without actually signing up just to test out their network where I am?

Well, if you have an unlocked GSM phone or a tablet, you can order a $1 SIM from T-Mobile and try it out. T-Mobile is pretty easy in that regard. As soon as I popped in the SIM it picked up the network, and from there I used the phone/tablet's stock brower (Chrome) to buy post-paid plans. It's similar to buying daily Wi-Fi time at hotels. I dont' think there is coverage area difference between T-Mobile's pre-paid and post-paid. At least that's what I heard from a couple of reps over the phone.

Only way to "try out" AT&T LTE network that I can think of is to buy their post-paid LTE phone. You can buy them from Amazon or Bestbuy but they are not cheap. And for AT&T, I was told there is a coverage difference between post-paid and pre-paid.

Or perhaps you can try one of these? AT&T stores don't give out SIM cards no matter how many times I threatened them. lol.

Edit: If you decide to go with SIM tryout route (AT&T or T-Mobile), make sure to set the correct APN. (access point name) Google search usually yields right APN settings for your phone.

This is what I get on T-Mobile Pre-paid in urban Houston (2x5Mhz LTE):

Download:

Upload:

Latency:

By the end of 2013, 90% of their LTE footprint will be 2x10Mhz (so doubt the speed). And I should note that even though I got LTE when T-Mobile launched it in March, I've only just recently noticed a HUGE bump in tower signal to get these speeds everywhere. Before it was just tiny pockets near a tower. So it's just your area and whether they've worked on it or not.

You may want to try out the Lumia 520, a low end Windows 8 phone. I saw an article that Amazon was selling it for $80. The 520 is a 4G phone so this would be an inexpensive way of trying out prepaid ATT and see if you get better service. The 520 comes with the Amber and GDR2 upgrades already loaded on it.

I tried out T-Mo prepaid, and my data speeds were horrible. I had probably 2-3 bars with 4 being reached every so often. Also, it would get a 4G connection (at least that's what I could tell on the Lumia 521). When I ran a speed test regardless if it were 2G or 4G, the ping was in the thousands and it couldn't finish a test meaning it just sat there waiting to download and upload for about 30 seconds a piece till it timed out.

I would like to try AT&T, but the more I think about price, the more I want to be able to use T-Mobile since it's prices are ridiculously cheaper in comparison.

I don't know what is the matter with my area. Clearly, I'm supposed to have pretty solid signal (I know coverage maps lie), but when using the 521, it just felt like since I was prepaid I didn't get the service I was supposed to. I know I can get 4G with AT&T. I have a VZW iPhone 5 and used my sister's nano SIM from AT&T, and it worked flawlessly. I pulled speeds of around 7-8 MB/s so I'm not worried about trying out AT&T anymore... I should probably change the thread title/OP.

Don't worry about AT&T devices since the iPhone 5 from VZW can use AT&T spectrum (not LTE though which my area has yet to get anyway).

To be honest with you, I don't make much money which is why all of this is such a struggle for me. Also, it just sucks that one GSM network apparently doesn't have good signal where I live, and the other is just extremely expensive for what I want.

*le sigh*

Unfortunately, them's the trade-offs. How much data do you really need per month? Do you really need at least 2 GB?

And have you looked at the dozens AT&T MVNOs to see if one of them has a plan that fits you? There's also a trade-off associated with MVNOs, as they don't get LTE either, but since you're going to be using a Verizon iPhone 5 anyway, it's not much of a difference. Speed is usually capped around 3-5 Mbps on 3.5g.

As an example, H2O Wireless gives 3 GB for $60, 1 GB for $50, and 500 MB for $40.
