If you own the modem, you get $10 off per month. If the modem cost you $110 (including shipping), this is an 11 month ROI.

Also, if you wanted another computer hooked up through the cable modem, you buy a router for about $50. See the hot deals forum and search for "Netgear" or "Linksys". The router avoids any more per month charges to @home.

Benefits of Owning Own Modem

BTW: AT&T@Home just raised prices by $6/month, so now it's $46/mo

You get $10 off per month when you supply your own modem. Just return the one you have to AT&T. So with your own modem, you pay $36 per month. At a savings of $10 per month, it'll take you 11 months to get your money back ($99 for modem plus shipping) with this deal.

No you cannot hook up an extra modem without having to pay for two services. A home network is a much better idea. You can get a 2nd IP address from them for $5/mo or you can use a router that uses just the one IP address you got now.

<< On what basis do they choose these customers? This ticks me off! Is that even legal to only offer to a select group of customers and not to anyone else? >>

<< Ah, ok... Yes, I do believe they can do this. AT&T offers this to all their customers I believe. I also believe they have every right to do this. Its like offering a coupon to customers of theirs. Nothing wrong with that. >>

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I WAS referring to current AT&T customers, which is what I am. Yet I never received an e-mail or letter, and they're saying that since we weren't one of their privileged customers we don't get to get in on the deal?

This is a bunch of crap!!!!!!!! :|

I just tried purchasing the modem using my last name and account number, and low and behold it wouldn't let me! I guess its only for certain AT&T customers, which is totally unfair!!!

From what I understand with the ATT deal... it is one modem per account.

I've had cox@home for 7 mos. If I get my own modem, they will reduce teh bill by $15.00 per month.

With all the money I'm saving on this forum, I bearly can swing buying my own modem /router.. hehe

Wish there was a hot deal brewing for cox@homer's somewhere... for $100 or under?

My reply from AT&T after complaining about the price increase and selectivity of the $99 modem offer (boilerplate):

Thank you for writing.

We appreciate your taking the time writing and sending us your concerns.
However, the price increase was a Corporate decision and was implemented
to upgrade the network and improve performance.

At this time, this is a limited special offer and only people on the
original mail list can take order the $99 modem. Thank you for your
interest. We will be looking to rollout this offer nationally so watch
your mail for something in the future.

As always, your comments and additional feedback are welcome.

Did you actually call and try to order one? I don't think they actually care whether or not you get the letter, you just have to have a valid customer number.

I ordered the 3COM when the deal was first posted here and have been patiently awaiting the modem's arrival. Yesterday, I got a letter from AT&T about the Motorola deal. Since my 3COM is in transit, I'll plan to go ahead with that and ignore the Motorola offer. AT&T doesn't really care which one I have, it just wants an easy way to upgrade the install base and at the same time get out from under the maintenance obligation. AT&T want its customers to use up to date equipment but they don't want to bear the cost of the upgrade. These modem offers are the way they've decided to achieve that.

FWIW - If I had seen both offers before I ordered, I think I would have chosen the Motorola because it comes with a 2 year warranty and the 3 COM's is only one year.

You ordered it by phone? Do you have the phone number??

(I really wanted to order the RCA modem but the 3COM seems OK if I can't do that).

On the subject (sort of): Does anyone know of particularly good deals on DOCSIS 1.1 compliant cable modems outside of this AT&T deal?

Anyone know a site with reviews of Cable Modems (I've found reviews of cable modem services, but not the hardware)?

Thanks...

I did try to e-mail them regarding the promotion.
Here is what i got back
Thank you for your interest in purchasing a Motorola cable modem through this special offer from AT&T Broadband. Unfortunately, this offer is available only in select AT&T Broadband areas and therefore we are unable to process your request at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. AT&T Broadband appreciates your business and is happy to have you as a customer.
For the people who received letters or e-mails from @home or Motorola about this promotion, what area are you in?

Bump!

Who actually received the e-mail or letter, and what area do you live in?

Good deal if you can get it because it says you get 1 month free service. So that's like paying $69 for the modem.

It won't let me get one though. Kinda pisses me off that they selectively give out offers.

Is it legal for @Home to do this? I'm quite skeptical. On what basis do they select the regions which can receive this offer?

That's almost akin to saying, "We only serve people from the East side of the tracks!"

Where's Ralph Nader when u need him!?

actually, @home would prefer customers to own a cable modem.
that means long term customers for them.
what else can you use a cable modem for other than subscribing to @home or other cable companies.
not to mention, they are making some $ by making a deal w/ those companies and selling us the hardwares.

c'mon, bring cheap modems to all area!!!

Of course they can make different offers in different places. The offers are probably based on the equipment being used in the area. My area is all fiber optic so it was probably easy to upgrade the node equipment to DOCSIS compatibility. Other areas may need more time. I think that if you are in an area that is being converted, you can get any compliant modem and take advantage of any of the offers. If your area is not being converted (yet), you have to wait until they get to you.

Is there a standard Cable system? If I buy this one, would it work with other Cable providers other than AT&T? ie. Road Runner, or whatever other companies might spring up? (doesn't NetZero offer some free broad band connections??)

Yes, this modem is DOCSIS compatible, that is the agreed upon standard for almost all cable modem providers. The Motorola Surfboard is the modem that many providers give out for rentals.

This would be a smoking deal if more of us could get in on it. Haven't tried this deal yet but I never received an e-mail so I doubt I will be able to. I would take the Motorola over the 3com anyday, but I may have no choice.

Anyone know a site that compares these modems in a meaningful way (RCA, Moto, 3COM?)

From all I can tell, the 3COM might be older technology, but it's really difficult to decipher from the specs. I know the 3COM was well respected in its day (and this is likely an updated model vs. those older reviews).

??
Thanks
