I have had Nextel for my wife for 5 years and have never had a problem. However the past 2 weeks our service at my house has been pretty much non-existant. Last night I had to call 911 and i got routed to a county dispatcher 100 miles away. :| and the connection was so bad the dispatcher could not understand a word i was saying. I had to call back on my tmobile phone and got right to my countys dispatcher.

anybody else having problems with Nextel?

Nextel and sprint finished their merger today I believe (saw it on bloomberg TV) maybe this has something to do with it?

That's no excuse. Cingular's buyout of ATT Wireless didn't cause any problems for me.

Hmm, this just solidifies it. I'm sticking with Cingular when the contract on my phone runs out. I don't want to move from them to someone even crappier.

You are going to dismiss a company because of one complain?

I've had my Nextel service for almost 5 years and I've been very happy with them. They have even increase coverage in certain areas of Michigan that I thought would never receive any attention.

I love my nextel work phone except for it's age (36 hours of battery standby)

I'd sell my left nut to get that model phone (i530) onto cingular, but I know I can't

Nextel's service is complete and utter trash. And I'm also referring to their customer service. If you want to hear how incompetent they are, lookup one of my old threads about this awful company. Bunch of damned thieves :|

Nextel is too expensive for me. Ever hear of the saying "Out of the pan into the fire"? At this point, Cingular is the pan...

Had Sprint until I moved 5 miles from my previous residence (this is in an urban area, mind you), and got no service whatsoever. Went to AT&T (because I got a solid signal there), and now I'm part of the largest nationwide network! /cheer

I dig Nextel, though...and I imagine that the transition with the towers might have something to do with your signal problems. I'd call and find out for sure, though, and get some credits while you're at it.

Nextel ALWAYS sucked.

Decent phones but CRAP reception, constant dropped calls and terrible customer service.

They were first with PTT and that was the only thing they ever had going for them.

No. They have entirely different technologies, and Nextel has said it's not moving to CDMA until 2007. Well, they said that they would support iDen until at least 2007.

Nextel has more signal issues than Cingular? NO WAY?! THAT'S OUTRAGEOUS!

Seriously, wake up. Nextel has never been a coverage leader, and would never claim to be. The draw of Nextel is their push-to-talk service, and many people wouldn't do without it. I really don't think Nextel is that great for a majority of regular consumers, but they have a big disadvantage in the business arena. Compare Verizon or Sprint with Cingular, not Nextel.

Are you serious? So you're sticking with Cingular because of this comment (the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back"), but they were too expensive for you anyway? Might I also add that this is just one carrier. There are a dozen others to choose from. Why would one negative comment about ONE carrier change your mind about all the others.

uninformed consumers = every company's best friend

As for the OP, have you tried their customer service line? I believe all carriers constantly try to better their coverage by making little tweaks to their networks. I'm betting that they probably made a change in your area that made things worse.

Also, for your future protection, DO NOT use Nextel for 911 calls. Nextel recently said that they would be late in installing E911 service AGAIN. I think all the other carriers have implemented it in most areas, if not all.

Settle down Beavis. Jesus Christ, what I'm saying is, Cingular has enough horror stories, but they're good enough to not make me move to someone else which could have more problems

Overreacting FTW!

Works wonders for them. Many businesses got the PTT for the entire company. Would be too expensive to change now, plus I don't think ppl on Nextel can PTT to ppl on Verizon. Didn't used to be able to, dont know about now. PTT is wonderful for Nextel, no denying. But it doesnt mean they dont get dropped calls, crap reception and terrible customer service.

Sooo... you sticking with Cingular has little to nothing to do with this thread then, right? Great. Now that's settled.

I'm a Sprint customer, and I know I'm not going to be able to use my Push-to-Talk to contact Nextel customers, so I'd say you're absolutley right there. More importantly, nobody in the industry can match Nextel's speed. It is pretty much instant, whereas when I had Sprint's ReadyLink (that didn't last long) it takes a few seconds to connect, and I heard Verizon's is even worse.
But it doesnt mean they dont get dropped calls, crap reception and terrible customer service.
You're right about dropped calls and bad reception in most areas. I had a friend that moves carriers EVERY TIME his contract is up, and his last move was from Nextel to Sprint. He says he only moved because Nextel cost him too much and because so many of our friends are on Sprint that it would save him money calling Sprint people. However, he definitely got worse coverage than me in some areas and better coverage in others. That's the nature of the industry. But Nextel doesn't cover NEARLY what the top three carriers do, so I don't doubt that coverage in general would be worse.

As for customer service, everyone has horror stories, but my friend was happy with his customer service (he calls all the time because he's a very needy person). The major problems are usually just misunderstandings from the carrier's side. Believe it or not, they don't go out TRYING to piss off their customers.

This thread made me realize that it's best to just stick with what I have.
